Well regardless of what's been brewing, I have 3 reds and 3 blues coming in the mail. I'll build them and we can test them out.

Yes, back then consoles did not automatically reset themselves.. On an old SSL you have to look at the screen and turn the knobs until they null out. Many consoles didn't have that feature. So you would just listening back and reset the knobs. If not you had to write down all the channel settings.

We used to take a small cassette recorder and read the settings into it. Saves time marking down the settings. Play it back, listen and reset, saves time looking back and forth to the paper when resetting them.

Just bought A set of D'Addario EXL 170. 45-65-80-100. I use them on my 2 - Peavey T-40s, 1968 P- bass, Fender Jazz Bass. Rotos on the 1975 Rickenbacker 4001 Flat wounds on the Hofner. Trying to decide on the Alembic.

Yep svart, slope blows, I didn't think to put the slope behind the speakers. Won't having a wall on one side and open space on the other be as big of an issue as having the slope on one side? If I do the slope behind the speakers, like you said here, should I put up a gobo to the right of the console to kind of close in the room? Also, the only tracking that I do is the occasional acoustic and or vocal or close mic'd amp and mixing is the real priority. Yeah it's still a tough call. A gobo could be a good option, especially on wheels or something so you can move it around, and possibly block off the amps a bit more. Your room has some crazy acoustics to work out with all the corners and things. I guess work on corners first since bass builds in corners, and you have a lot of them! Then work on reflection points and then deaden the sloped walls and ceiling. Could you build a wall on the right side to the end of the console, where you now want to put the gobo. that would help seperate you from the drums. That way you could put a bass trap in the corner behind you right speaker too. That window on the left looks like a first reflection point and if it is, will have to baffled. The wall would allow you to baffle the right side also. YMO

The comments on the extension cable said there was a lot of trouble with the female end making contact. Think I'll hold off on the cables and wait to see what Tony thinks.

Tell them to buy a "Playschool" cassette recorder with the built in mic. See what they say.

I paid for my 2 bodies 15 months ago. From the number he said he was picking up, I was wondering if there would be enough to fill the first paid orders let alone the waiting list. I'd look at other options.
Did you get yours? Mine look great! What tube and transformer are you thinking? I'm going AC701 and probably the big AMI, I want to do these once and be done with them! At first look I too thought not bad. But after I started working with the bodies for an hour, I started seeing problems. One mic was taller than the other. I asked for a matched pair. The headbasket hoop leans back, and is bent in on the sides, and you can see soldier joints from the outside, and mesh isn't straight. Out of the 3 screws the hold that hold the headbasket to the base, only 2 line up, trying all variations, so at least one hole will have to be enlarged. One hole that holds the P.S.Bs to the base isn't very deep and the holes that hold the binder to the base are a different size or just chrome plated inside. I guess this is D.I.Y. I have two real M-49s so I kinda cheeped out on these. I'm using the 5840, T-49, but ordering the Thiersh Bluelines. I have the power supplies and binder cords built, just waiting for the capsules. What capsule are you using? What did you pay for the 701? Your tube and transformer are top of the line.

I've got a lots of trashed AKG headphones and am getting tired of putting out $100 phones to the musicians. I'm at the point of telling them to bring their own. Thinking about getting 10 of these. Are these my answer?

In 1977, after coming off the road from a Canadian tour, my 6 piece band (2 female singers) hooked up with an Elvis inpersonator. Played playboy and playgirls clubs, Vegas and toured. Did some recording and people thought we were Elvis and his band. After awhile his ego got too big (he wanted $5,000 a week), on another tour, and the band was told we were upstaging him, we were told to stand still, we quit and went back on our own. It was a fun time.

Dude those speakers look HUGE....to be so close. Are those considered nearfeilds? Didn't use them Just placed them there at first. Using NS-10s with a sub placed in the lower center section, Auratones and some smaller nearfields. Stereo soundfield is great. Placed a 37" L.C.D. monitor between them.

On the GroupDIY war, I think they are spliting hairs. At A.E.S., I listened to 8 different model Telefunkens in row, and heard very little difference between them. Same with other mics and gear. All the equipment today has gotten so good, it's the human factor that comes into play. Vintage Vs. new, aging componnets and build techniques can make the difference. YMO

In one picture, R4 is piggybacked. When I did that it somhow lowered the resistance. Use a 1K1, 1K3, or 1K5 in there to lower the voltage and center the pot. Run the light off the L.E.D. soldier points, I always use a 110volt light and run it after the fuse.

I've built 15 tube mics. It takes hours and hours of time to source the parts and build them. I spent 3 hours last night just cutting and soldering 2 binder cords for my M-49 builds let alone $250 for the binders and $100 for the cable. When the mic are done, they become my babies. I don't know what I'd charge to build one for someone else or if it would even be worth it.

Bought this one in 1981. I've got 2 of Rigglers bodies on the Fedex truck to finish up my D.I.Y. M-49 builds. When I get the capsules for them I'll do a comparsion.

I've got 3 Tim Campbell capsules, with 2- 414EB mounts, in the mail right now. With 2 of them, I'm going to replace the orginal nylon ring capsules in my 414EBs. I was going to list the orginal capsules, they are in great shape, on E-bay. If you're interested, P.M. me.

******NOTE***** I just realized you need USB or TB, so the below wouldn't apply unless you want to use a TB chassis for the pcie card, which still might be a good deal... You might consider a used SSL Alphalink AX... 24 analog I/O plus another 24 adat. Some places include the MADI card for $3k total. Or you can get one on ebay like I did for half that. There's one right now with 1 day left for $800 w/no MADI card (line below). You can pick up an RME MADI card used for about $900 and be good to go with I/O to spare and very good conversion (not to mention latency is as good as it gets). Or if you don't need RME totalmix, then just get an ssl MADI Xtreme card for about $300 used (mine's for sale btw). www.ebay.com/itm/Solid-State-Logic-SSL-Alpha-Link-24-i-o-MADI-AX-ADAT-AD-DA-Converter-/191366029842?pt=US_Computer_Recording_Interfaces&hash=item2c8e4de212I have lots of preamps and am looking for 16-24 channels of just conversion into a Mac Mini. I could just mix I.T.B. How would the alphalink hookup to a Mac Mini.
