Recently sold some stuff I haven't been using much so decided to go for a RS660. Really looking forward to try it on an album mix next week

I just used Cinematic Rooms in trial mode on a mix where all my other reverbs, Bricasti, Exponential, Lexicon etc, just didn't feel right. Will definitely buy eventually, but do they ever have ordinary discounts, like Black Friday?

A very late reply to the original topic.. One thing I've thought about since I worked in the EMI studio in Stockholm for the first time in the early 90's is the "psychology" of having a big (from foot to ceiling) window in the control room, from the side of the room. Instead of the common situation where the producer and engineer hide behind the desk, this gives a more transparent communication between the CR and the musicians. I produced a bunch of albums in the 90s in that studio and almost never sat down when the musicians played. Instead I wandered back and forth, gave cues, waved and cheered sometimes which I believe made the musicians more relaxed. EMI sold off their studios many years ago and now the same studio is called Baggpipe Studio, pics here: baggpipe.com

I keep saying I’ll be all over the first controller where a manufacturer makes an effort to provide control mapping of plugins besides their own. You guys seen the MP Midi? mpmidi.com/That and a couple of faders is exactly what I would love. The concept is the best out there I believe, I mean if you want to control plugins from a controller, but it doesn't work with the native plugins of the DAW... I settled with the 8 pots and a fader on the Avid Dock + two Avid S1s.

Ah, I see. Too bad they are out of business. You are in Sweden so maybe give Bo a ring and see if he will sell you one of his 251 mounts. They are creme coloured and that might not match up with that stunning pearl colour FleA boldly chose to use. I'm a huge FleA fan and just based on the look of their 251, I'm drooling over just how beautiful the aesthetic is. Looks are really important to me, especially if we are talking about a microphone that will primarily be put in front of singers. Hands down the FleA GA251 and TF251 are the most beautiful replicas, but the FleA is off in it's own class and league. I would absolutely kiss the FleA251 open mouth and lick it's beautiful body, I think metaphorically speaking, maybe literally..lol Might be the sexist microphone EVER made by anyone ever. So gorgeous that FleA251. Just call it love okay Oh yes, Bo of course! Thank You!

First little session with this mic yesterday. Only a very limited vocal part but wow I love this mic. Super nice top end and very creamy, the best word I can find. The only thing I don't get, other than for the original look, is the solution with the swivel mount on the cable. With a normal mic stand I always get a lot of LF from feet stomping. Are there stands that prevent this? I always order a normal shock mount for mics with this solution. Hopefully there are a fitting shock mount for this model too. The Latch Lake Bigfoot is pretty effective at reducing stand transmissions. On the more cost efficient side, the Tama Iron series stands are an excellent alternaitve with solid stanchions and really good clutching. I replaced all my K&M stands with the Tama's and use a BigFoot in my vocal booth. Another benefit from the Bigfoot is the reduced footprint and mounted wheels that make moving it around very simple. These are modern solutions that address stand transmission but there are also EU made stands like vintage Beyerdynamic stands that also have solid stanchions and pretty decent clutches. Lastly I'd look at shockmounts that can accomadate your microphone and it's cable that greatly reduce rumble transmission. There is a European based company I can't think of the company name atm, but they make very well designed mounts that focus on extreme stand rumble reduction, not cheap! I'll see if I can find their name and post it here
Hey, thanks for the input and the tip! I believe I know the company that make (made) shockmounts and neither I remember the name. I believe it's the same company that made mounts for Neumann, but they're out of business. I got two of their shock mounts for my Flea 49s and no they weren't cheap. I've asked Ivan @ Flea about recommended mounts and of course a new cable. Also googled a bit and found a 251 mount from Peluso, so this will be solved. Thx again!

Some of those Impulse records from the 60s used the 84 on the bass not sure which but I have heard love supreme Coltrane With a high energy drummer like Elvin Jones playing in the same room you need to put that SDC (84 or whatever) wrapped in foam or hanging in rubber bands in the bridge of the bass, pointing upwards, this to avoid too much bleed of course. It works swell! I've tried SM57 in this position too as it picks up less of the room, and the result is jaw dropping. Needs a bit more eq but works surprisingly well! But if the bass is isolated my go to is a large condenser 4" in front of the bridge. If you need more detail raise it towards the players hand. I'm a fan of using only one mic and finding a sweet spot, for phase reasons. Some like it, but I usually avoid the f-holes. Many basses have a bit of extra resonance around the low C-C#-D-D# region, and in my experience that resonance is even more present around the f-holes.

I've got one (the one with red lightbulbs) and also two Analoguetube Fairchild clones. The SHMC is good but I call it the bimbo of my rack because it has the looks but the space inside is air mostly, and to me it doesn't sound nearly as epic as it looks. Really nice show off piece. The AT-101 on the other hand is fantastic. I don't know the Herchild but if it is only half as nice as the Analoguetube I'd recommend it.

Three years after this thread started...but since I've mixed analog this hasn't been the top priority type of plugin for me. But that's going to change soon so I'm looking at transformer plugs now and just demoed this. That unity switch is explained in the manual, I believe it's not doing what you might think. And yes the plug makes the signal louder (just as with HEAT in ProTools) which could be conceiving, but I don's agree this is snake oil, on the contrary I think it sounds really good. The way I see it transformers in the audio chain isn't an effect per se, so the effect isn't meant to be more than in the more subtle area, but put on all channels it helps to glue. Sorry, not meaning to lecture about things you guys already know. I resurrected this thread actually to ask for favorite plug-ins that emulate transformers. Checked out Acustica, really interesting, have to check out sometime, but no real transformer plug-in except for a free one knob thing. Gonna try the UBK transformers too, but I'd be grateful for more tips!

Going back and forth, I still prefer the UAD 140 I’ve finally joined the UAD bandwagon and I’m really impressed with it, not least the 140 just as you John. But I’ll never understand why different plates, despite sounding fairly similar, fits different contexts. And also I find Soundtoys stuff SO nice, musical, fun and inspiring so this was a no brainier for me

Here’s another Rhodes I can recommend. I subscribed to Keyboard Magazine and read about this particular instrument that I had heard on many of my favourite albums so playing this plug now is special.. I agree with many in the thread that Keyscape is great too. Not sure though that any other do the fatter Richard Tee vibe as good as the Electra. I’ll have to demo this..😊 www.orangetreesamples.com/products/the-famous-e-electric-piano

In da house! Quick comparison with Lucas CS-1. Similar hi end but CS1 seemed more scooped and has more bass and less mid. The Flea sounds creamy in a very nice way. I'm convinced it'll be loved by many singers. BTW, I don't have time for the big shootout I mentioned earlier in this thread, but perhaps next autumn...

When I get my Flea (late May or early June) we're planning a shootout at Royal College of Music in Stockholm. I'll try to get an original to that shootout and the UA/Bock. Haven't thought about more clones but if there's interested manufacturers/parties that want to contribute they are of course welcome! We'll hopefully be shooting out the reissue Neumann M49 against an original Neumann and a Flea 49 too. We'll line them up and get a couple of singers and perhaps a couple of instrumentalists perform a pass on each mic. I tried shootouts before with all mics in a circle, to be able to compare the same pass/take on all mics, but felt it didn't make justice to any of the mics because of the compromise of the positioning of the performer, so the subtle differences between the performances will of course make this shootout less accurate

Another positive user review: I don't doubt this is a good plugin as I like most of the stuff from ST, but "massive difference"... This was quite subtle compared to what happens when I add the Chandler Zener on my drum parallel..even when I use it lightly on jazz mixes..

Tim, I'm SO curious to hear about what you think about the Flea! I've been on the brink for a couple of weeks. I have a Lucas CS-1 here which I believe has your capsule in it too. Really lovely mic, but I'm curious if the 251 goes one step further.. Weren't the Lucas mics based on Manning & BOCK, therefore using Haun for the "Akg" one & Thiersch for the "Neumann" one? aremos of course you are right! More than ten years since I got it so I forgot. So please excuse me timcampbell

Well please all of you take this with a grain of salt since I make the capsule for this mic and this is no reflection on anyone else's product, I have not heard the Upton, Heisermann, OPR, Golden age... but this things sounds like WOW! It is so creamy and sexy that I put it up and sang for an hour straight. It is already my favorite vocal mic and right now it sounds better than my original. I may have to look at some of my vintage's components as they are almost completely from 1959. It is louder and quieter than my vintage , very, very quiet in fact. As I said I have a dog in this fight so I'd recommend you try to audition one for yourself. I will try to make some sound files but as I said I am swamped and don't have recording setup in order right now. Wow, thanks for the report! I can't take it anymore I'm ordering one!

I looked for a stellar pre mainly for vocals 5 yrs ago, so I ordered a Beamer (one channel each of their Creamer and Berliner) from Sonic Farm to shoot out against Chandler REDD.47. I liked the REDD just a tiny bit more so I went for it. Then I goofed with returning the Beamer so it has been lying in the box since then. This week I found that box again and was reminded and listened to the 5yr old shoot out again and was impressed by Sonic Farm. I compared to my AMS/Neves too and the latter sound like...broken almost and clearly thinner. The Berliner sounds more natural and effortless wile the Creamer sounds more colored and what I guess many would call more ready/finalized. Take this with more than a grain of salt as both pieces have a lot of options and can be dialed to sound in many different ways. Anyway, I got lust for a Berliner and just contacted Boris@Sonic Farm for a possible trade in...which probably won't be possible, so perhaps I'll try to sell the Beamer.. Basically just wanted to chime in when I saw this thread and say that Sonic Farm imo is up there with the best. Really nice and well built.

Noticing how much slower most of those settings are than the original Altec, what’s the slowest any owners here ever set it? The 436C with adjustable control is actually twice as fast it appears. Explains why I have mine (Chandler reissue) on fastest attack/release all the time...
