Congrats! happy to share mobius patches - I have one that turns it into a volume pedal with an expression pedal. If you haven't get the Nixie Editor for it as it's a game changer for editing but also reordering patches for live use... Do you have it wired for stereo or pre/post? I have mine as pre/post, but either way is valid... Which power supply did you go with?

I think you answered your own question when you said you mostly record yourself one input at a time...
Buy for what you're using now. Rent for when you have to record a band.
I'd spend a big chunk of what would have gone into buying, fixing and maintaining an old analog board into sound treatment - bass traps behind mix, above you, behind, etc. Gobo-style bass traps on casters to create different environments. Look at your monitors - you didn't say what you're monitoring through, but unless you've got the room out of the way and then have good speakers, hard to tell what benefit you'd get out of any gear...

For a little bit of holiday cheer... I wrote and recorded this with a bandmate back in '96, but the song's lesson still holds true today. Fun times using Opcode's Studio Vision Pro, an SM58 and a 57. Happy holidays, merry merry, and enjoy!

20' Dsub snake with Redco cable and terminators is $101... with Mogami cable instead it's $147. I'd call Redco...

Amps!

Thanks for the well wishes!! What are your settings for it, to get the modern tones? Any pedals in front of the amp? I have to say, I'm kind of old school and LOATHE pedals in front of a high gain amp, as they just add white noise more than anything else. ' Thanks in advance! Sometimes straight through is best, but I have seen that sometimes a Tube Screamer or mid hump overdrive can help things like a Mesa Rectifier. Not adding gain, but more as a EQ. Seems like pedal + JCM800 is the sound most of us remember vs. just a stock JCM800, but perhaps we're thinking of different amps... Depends on the amp, and my only experience is putting my pedal board and a Keeley-modded Tube Screamer in front of my Eleven Rack on high gain patches. Otherwise, I'm in fairly clean amp land - Princeton, Princeton Reverb, Tremolux, and a Dr. Z MAZ 18...

There are companies that will do this - Adrian Belew (Talking Heads, King Crimson) had things like the Foxx Tone Machine racked when everyone was doing big racks.
For today, just get slide out trays to put the pedals on and get a switcher - that way you're only dealing with IO on a few points vs. on all pedals.
Also, for vintage or prized pedals, this keeps them original vs. destroying any value they may have had...
Radial's 500 series converters with input/output would be the ticket - add as many channels as you need/can afford.

ColorCoral Universal Dust Cleaner from Amazon. Comes in a jar and it's a yellow glob that you can roll over surfaces and it picks up dust, etc.
Bought it originally for my MBP laptop keyboard, bt also works great on keyboard controllers, etc.
If you're opening the window, that's the culprit. A HEPA air filter will help, but as soon as you open a window, it's game over...

I'd look at it like this - what else could you buy for $500+ that would have a bigger impact on your studio?

What problems are you trying to solve?
You could look at things like a Furman AR-1215 which regulates voltage, but a UPS that generates a clean sinewave power is probably a better bet. Also ensures if you're not on a laptop that in the case that you lose power, you can still save a session...
But again, no need to get a better "power conditioner." I'm sure Black Lion Audio is laughing all the way to the bank with their line of overpriced ones, same as Monster did.

Summit Audio TLA-50 can be found used for $500 - I bought mine for $400 several years ago and it pairs well with my Summit 2BA-221 mic Pre.

Two mics, two tracks. You can shift the tonality/EQ of your sound just from changing levels - or change between verse/chorus, etc. No need to commit. Don't compare yourself to Tim Pierce - what he does works for him but he's a session player and knows exactly the sound he needs.
Also as long as you're getting the right gain levels from the preamps, nothing to be gained going through the Mackie. you can always combine the takes in Cubase later.
LABEL everything - GTR Tk1 57, GTR Tk1 92 - etc. That way it's a lot easier to figure out all the tracks. Use that comments section below for more notes.

It does sound good, but prefer knobs to tweak the sound/speed on my chorus. Still have a 87 Ibanez SC10 Stereo Chorus that's lush and sounds great, but I'm getting about the same chorus sound in my Mobius, so the Ibanez is a home pedal now vs. on the pedalboard. Arturia makes a plugin of just this that was free for a while and sounds good, although I still prefer the SoundToys MicroShift.

Sorry about this.
Have been watching the Genesis clips, and makes me grateful I saw them live in Philly in 81, but seeing Phil so frail sitting in the chair singing so much at least a step down is saddening.

combining the top and bottom mic of each tom sounds problematic - phantom power problems people have mentioned, but also polarity - you'll have no way to flip the polarity unless you wire the Y cable specially for it.
Is the issue not having enough mic pres? I'm not sure of the goal here as it seems like it creates more problems than it solves.

Yep, you need one. Reverb and Tremolo vs. the Bassman, and headroom and low end vs. the DRRI - plus it's opto tremolo vs. tube-based on the DRRI.
Don't pay a fortune for them because the reissues sound just as good and these rarely get moved around and abused... but the 74 will be a lot easier to work on if required.
Great for guitar, keyboards and Wurli/Rhodes.
Perfect for a studio since you don't need to gig with it...

I'd get either a MacMini or M1 Mac with 27" monitors (plural) vs. an iMac. That way people can use your Mac or if they're adamant plug in their own laptop with ease - they may be more comfortable with Logic, Digital Performer, etc.
I don't see wiring as a cost, but that will add up.
Also while lots of good hardware, agree on budgeting for Avid HDX and the breakout box needed. That may push you to a Mac Pro.

Nice comparison video. I own an 87 Ibanez Analog chorus (SC10) and it's great, but doesn't really need to be on my board live as I'm getting worried about it getting damaged - those top-mounted plastic jacks weren't the sturdiest, and already had the pedal repaired. For a while I also had a Phase 90 and a MXR Micro Flanger on the board. Bought a Strymon Mobius and way happier - being able to adjust the wet/dry mix of the chorus on its own is a game changer for me, and then having rotary is a bonus. For playing live, I can't tell the difference, but it's nice to have multiple presets and to be able to organize them with the editor/librarian. For a while I had a Dunlop Mini volume/expression pedal for speed, but found I wasn't using it. Part of me wants to streamline my current pedalboard, and part wants to keep my options open....

Nice! The Barber Direct Drive is my Marshally sound and have had it for 21 years - great pedal. Love these into my Princeton Reverb (1980, Deluxe OT, Kendrick Black Frame), my Tremolux, or the Dr. Z MAZ 18. Love the Direct Drive. That's one of those pedals I've owned several times, sold to try other things, and keep coming back to it. Agree! I tried the V3 smaller version and it's just not the same. The silver Sharpie is wearing off on mine, but still sounds great. David Barber said that tonally the newer ones are slightly different. I tried things like the Friedman BE OD and other pedals, but similarly I keep coming back to this one.

Picked up a J. Rockett Archer Ikon to add to the pedalboard. Really great to push my Fender amps and the dr. Z on its own, and in front of a Barber Direct Drive or a Keeley-Modded TS9, it's tonal nirvana. Heck, even my hum bucker equipped Tele into my Tremolux now sounds great with just the Ikon on... Is that the “gold” or the “silver” Archer? I have the silver and it pretty much stays on all the time. I love J. Rockett pedals. It's the gold Archer, right in front of my J. Rockett Majestic. Love their pedals. The 2 Keeley Fuzz pedals and the compressor are in front of it, but I'm finding I rarely use the SP compressor, and the Electric Mudd (Keeley's inspired take on a Super Fuzz) is a very particular sound. But with the Mobius on a filter setting and that fuzz, it's the U2 "Elevation" sound. Not that we play any U2...
