That’s not about quality, that’s about statistical analysis suggesting they can build them cheap enough to replace X% over 10 years, and the way that interfaces with the marketing dept. Doug How damn cynical of you, why your absolutely right except you forgot 2 other important cynical numbers they looked at: how many will remember the 10 year warranty how many will have been resold on the used market with new proof of original purchase date. Yeah I’m every bit as cynical, grasshopper I have taught you well😎 I would love to have a business model where my warranty / repair philosophy is "throw it in the trash and replace". Because that's way cheaper and easier than dealing with a return, repairing it, and then sending it back. My gut tells me any build cost under $50 would qualify for that model quite nicely. Cynicism aside, it's also likely they just have a QC/production test process that is dialed in for a low failure rate. The build is mostly SMT. Pick and place machines are pretty darn consistent... Part failures could be easily caught in an automated audio test using an AP audio analyzer. Brad

Isn't that the best, I've talked ribbon mics with my rep a fair bit... Jon Hey Jon! Yeah! I enjoyed the role reversal. He was like "wait a minute, I'm supposed to be selling you something!" If you will be at NAMM, let's meet up. Brad

Well, you convinced me to not buy any BF Software (got the free Waves Sibilance and H-Comp) and instead buy a pair of Mister Focus EQ's with some SuperFilters Thanks! I can get behind that plan. Thanks or the order, Mark! Brad

Many many years ago I had terrible issues with a Sweetwater employee, but that guy is long gone. I don't mind my current Sweetwater sales guy at all. In fact I'm really close to convincing him to buy a Silver Bullet. Ha. Brad

I'd look at Purple Audio, BAE, and Heritage Audio if you are looking for assembled products.
Don't worry about current draw. All of these have sufficient current capability IMO assuming they are made within the last few years. I'd prioritize sound, noise, I/O, and build quality in that order. Some of lesser performing racks have excellent build quality mechanically.

Will do. By the way, Sweetwater just called and told me they are completely sold out of the L10. Wiped out in hours. I'm on the backorder list. Brad Brad's getting one..ooo. Should I wait..or get on the list..hmm Please don't interpret me buying one as an endorsement of this rack. I simply decided to buy one because I expect I will now get emails about whether this is a decent rack for the price, and whether I recommend it. People always email asking about the cheapest racks on the market and rarely the expensive ones. So I figured I should have an informed opinion. I literally have a drawer of 500 racks at this point. If it doesn't suck I will certainly let you guys know. For $299 I can at least use it for photos once I swap out the blue panels. Brad

I just ordered one of the L10 racks...too cheap to pass up. Best to have it on hand for testing purposes since a gazillion people are now going to own these. Brad Sweet, I'm eager to hear the results of your testing on this one. Will do. By the way, Sweetwater just called and told me they are completely sold out of the L10. Wiped out in hours. Yes, my expert internet digging involved typing into google, “Louder Than Liftoff Black Friday” and clicking on one of the first results. Sorry for spreading misinformation! Haha. No worries. Thank you for alerting me to the fact that an old page was still accessible via Google! I may do some kind of promotion tomorrow or over the weekend. As soon as I can get my act together. I decided to take my girlfriend out for a nice day of hiking in the coastal redwoods and exploring the CA coast. So stay tuned... Brad

Guys, This is an old page from last year. If you note the dates on the page it said "Please note: promotions go live at 12:00 AM PST on 11/24/17. The discounts won't be active on the store until then." I just made that page inactive even though it wasn't even linked to anything on the site. Some of you internet sleuths really go digging... Sorry for the confusion. Brad

Hey Darren, Sorry I'm late to the party over here. Congrats on the success of this song! It's well deserved. I have a feeling you would have nailed it without any of this great gear. It's hard to go wrong with lots of talent in the room. I'm stoked for you guys. Thanks for taking a chance on the Silver Bullet a year and a half ago and helping spread the word. I really appreciate that immensely. Brad

Hey all,
The big sale ends tonight at midnight. So if you were on the fence, I suggest hopping over to the analog side.

Well, that is true and I wonder what the numbers really mean. What I did was press the UI button in Reaper so I could see the UAD numbers and not the knobs. This way I could set the Q to .5, db to 2.5, comp ratio to 4.00 etc etc. So I in fact went by the numbers(Console 1 screen goes by numbers as well), however I'm not totally sure that really means anything either... I suppose it should.
Will try the Bx today! I thought their Neve was great.
Unfortunately, I don't think the numbers mean much other than it's what the programmers want the DAW to see. I think you'd really have to break out some test gear to see if you are truly getting apples to apples. Who wants to do that when there's music to be made? I really like the concept of the Soft Tube console and could see myself preferring that even if I thought one of the other emulations is slightly better sounding. For me personally, workflow is huge. I think I kind of like the less openess of the UAD version here.
I think it might be interesting to hear a version where you matched not the knob settings, but the knob results. It's very possible that the 2:00 on the UAD knob is equivalent to the 1:30 setting on the Soft Tube knob, and vice versa. Obviously this would take a lot more effort. But there are always tolerances from unit to unit and we could very well be hearing those modeled differences. Brainwork includes this variation in their version via their TMT process (Tolerance Modeling Technology...I think). I got a demo from Dirk once and was blown away by how different the entire plugin channel sounded every time he changed the channel number.
Thanks for sharing! Brad

Aren’t those P1’s just a hair different than a Great River NV? The P1 is essentially a 500 series Pacifica, but with a different output transformer. This is Quad Eight heritage. I use them interchangeably in my studio. The Great River is a Neve inspired design. I feel like they are different textures entirely. The Great River is more weighty and smooth. The P1 has more presence to my ears. Brad

The P1 doesn't do line level. You'll need a line to mic pad in front of it.
Personally, I find myself in the camp of one flavor for the whole shebang as I find it gives me more cohesion and a consistent vibe. I'd probably look for a tube option if I was looking for a contrasting color. I can't think of anything that is both mic and line though.
Here's an idea. What about getting a very clean and uncolored preamp (I like the True PT2-500) and then adding another piece after it that lets you swap out different flavors.

Got my Royal Blue Stage 2’s in and had a play today. Still learning how everything interacts but after having a Silver Bullet for a while it feels very familiar and intuitive. First test was DI P-bass going ZOD to Stage 2. What a tone! I’m not sure how to describe it but while very similar to what I could do going to the SB it feels different (more extreme?) in the way I could get it to break up. Very easy then to just back it off a touch or dial in some dry, move the tilt around till it fit and I was good to go. Fun and quick to audition the range of what’s possible. Also digging the filter, very smooth (I have mine set with the vintage and saturation in). An interesting surprise was the way one can play the tilt filter against the lift in the Royal Blue module, didn’t anticipate that but it’s turning out to be one of my favorite features. Also ran some OH’s and guitar thru it, again, easy to explore ranges of what’s possible with everything having a nice 3D harmonic glow to it. Looking forward to tracking vocals this week and learning what it can do there. I'm in the honeymoon phase for sure but what a product! Hi, Thanks for the great feedback! You make an excellent observation about using the Treble Boost on Royal Blue with the Focus EQ. I was just playing with that myself and I find that if I set the Focus EQ to about 9:45 or 10:00 (Bass tilt) then I get a top end that feels similar to the dry signal, but there is more meat down low and more clarity throughout the mids. It's like a more exciting version of the original track, but without being bright or muddy. This may be a secret weapon preset. I'll have to take some sweeps of that setting to see what it's doing frequency wise...and then post them. thanks, Brad

When discussing API gain, like the API preamp, does the Chroma have the same gain as say an API preamp? When you change settings from the (N)eve/(A)pi setting, is the gain the same, or does the gain structure change? Or are they consistent in gain? I have even more questions regarding the MR Focus line of products, but I need to do some more research. Thanks An API 512C has up to 65 dB of gain in MIC mode (34 to 65 dB with Pad out, 14 to 45 dB with Pad in). Chroma has up to 60 dB of gain in both A and N modes when you are using it as a mic preamp (MIC switch engaged). With HI GAIN out the gain range is 8 - 34 dB. With HI GAIN engaged the gain range is 34 - 60 dB. You can think of the HI GAIN switch as working in a reverse manner as that of a pad. You can toggle back and forth between A and N modes and the gain stays constant. I wanted the user experience to be intuitive and not tweaky so I did the work under the hood to make it do what most of us would expect. I hope that helps. Feel free to ask whatever you'd like to know about Mister Focus. I'm happy to help. thanks, Brad
