My Take, has the best of everything (at least for my wants and needs) Helios, Neve, Api, & Shadow Hills, Retro, (and quite a bit more not shown in this pic. This is one of two remote rigs I have now built. Each rig consist of 6 cases. One rig is almost always out somewhere on long term session rentals, and the other rig, when it's not rented and still here, I will occasionally use it as a summing / mixing setup when I have ongoing recording projects in the studio. This way I don't have to breakdown my studio's console while doing basics, I just mix thru the second rig and not have to repatch or touch anything on the console. Attachments:

I bought the original version a few weeks after it was released. Many, many years ago. Used it hundreds of times for mixing and mastering. Still use it today. It's quite a beautiful sounding unit.
If you'd like, you can send me a stereo file and I'll put it thru the Vitalizer and send it back to ya?

These units are FABULOUS! I had one here for two weeks, and will now order 2 for my studio~!
It's a whole new ball game for vintage guitar amps... period.
I've owned over 100 vintage amps at one time, and still own almost 60, this is the shit! Only wish I had them 30 years ago when I started collecting.

Part of my Collection... As previously stated, not just one will do. That being said, I would guess you need at least 4 or 5 that would probably cover most ground. And if you buy used, it won't cost you a fortune. By the way, the pic only includes half of what I owned on that particular day. I had it with carrying amps out of the storage room and just gave up at that point. So I took the pic, and stopped after that. There were more then 40 other amps still in the storage room at the time! I don't even wanna talk about the cost of tube replacement and upkeep on 100 amps each year! Attachments:

Don, T-Fusers are great, work great! I've got a load of them scattered about the room.
Eric, I use the Dunlavys as I mentioned earlier, but I do go between them and my Wilsons to double check everything.
And for the last few weeks I also have the newest version of Unity Audio "Boulders" installed in my room. Very, very nice monitors!

Haha. Ok, so here's the deal... As stated previously I do pretty much have all I could ever want right here, except for two things....
#1 - Right now the weather here is FABULOUS, and it is usually wonderful from April to November / December. But after that, all Hell breaks loose, and since I hate the winter, and the cold in general, I think I've finally had enough. I really don't want to experience yet another miserable winter like the last one we had here in the North East last year! That being said, I've found nothing better as yet?
#2 - What used to be a flourishing market in my area, has all since dried up. Bands are far and few between. Most of the clubs are gone, and so are the bands.
Hey I still love what I do, BUT there just isn't enough of it here as of late... Hence, my looking for somewhere new to move to.
As for BarFunGul... The impetus for this pub was a place for my artists to relax, and hang after a long day of sessions.
Since building B.F.G. in my old joint. I've built and owned a large nightclub "The LiveWire" (500 + people) as well as a small pub, "Ale Mary's" (75 people) both here in my town. I only sold them because the Studio was too busy, and I couldn't watch over them like I should, And you can imagine what was going on behind my back... So I got out while I could......I sold both businesses.
The sad part is, the new owners destroyed the atmosphere, vibe and the great following I had built over the years. Both places closed in just a few years...Now totally Out of business.
So when I moved my studio into this new location, I needed a place for myself and my bands to hang & drink again, So I rebuilt BarFunGul here .....And the rest is history.
And I can rebuild this anywhere, and as they say .... they will come!
The only problem might be locating a distributor for the over 200 imported beers I carry here at B.F.G. I guess it depends on where I go.
Anyhow Last night had over 35 people in and outside of the pub... Lots of musicians, producers, and friends... Booking gigs (house concerts) now for the next few months!
Anyhow if you guys wanna schedule a get together here at BarFunGul, I'd love to have ya here. Last big party I threw was the "Helios Listening Session" a few years ago.
It would be a blast to actually meet some of you in person.
But we'd have to do it before the winter sets in, as you never know if you'd be able to get here because of the random snow storms, and just plain bad weather.
I'm in MIllbrook NY (12545) if ya wanna research the area.

HA... This is a good one... And hits very close to home for me.
Some of you might know, here in my joint I have a private pub for my clients. It's called BarFunGul, and it's been in operation for the last 18 years.
Anyhow, this pub is in a (separate space away from the studio area. I pride myself in offering over 150 exotic beers, and always have 4 Belgian Beers on tap. On tap this week:
St. Bernardus ABT-12 Duvel Kwak Delirium Tremens
No local (American) crap allowed here.
Anyhow long story short, I never allow myself to drink during a session, only after I am done...now the band or artist can do whatever they like, but NOT at my pub until we are DONE!
Long story short, I've been thru this mixing on beer thing for the last 20 years give or take. And I always think after drinking a few Belgians the mixes are fantastic, and I'm stoked... That is, until the next morning when I listen again with fresh ears.
That being said, I mix totally straight, and when I have a mix I like, and I'm done for the day, I will pour myself a goblet of something special, take a listen, and possibly take notes if there are changes to be made in the morning.

Hey gang, I have no problem with Dave's stuff, I consider him a friend, and I love everything he has his hands in. Anything Dave creates is fabulous.
And I'm in the camp of whatever sounds better (to the end user) is fine. Even if that means some custom mods along the way. Why not! Make it as good as it can be.
As you know,I'm a fan of anything Helios, That being said Henry's console with the Beyers installed (or any Helios with Beyers) isn't a real contender for me in the vintage console game. So what Dave did to that console had to be done in my opinion. And it is a wonder to sit at... Really a beautiful thing....And from what I heard it sounds as good, if not better then it looks. I'm jealous!) Haha
Long story short, I too have done mod after mod on my modules. I experimented with at least 3 different transformers, as well as some new tweaks and mods from Tony himself to bring up the headroom, and make the outputs up to +4 instead of 0 Db.
In a nutshell, the quest never ends...
Until you finally one day say I had enough of this shit, and just realize that most of this doesn't matter one bit, and all you wanna do is make music. I'm at that place now!

Hey Guys.. OK, the original trannys in Henrys console were in fact the little "Beyers", and in the extensive 2 day listening session we did at my place over a few days, they were found to be the most undesirable of all the Helios modules!
So, as I stated previously, Henry's console does not have these installed (for good reason) But I guess for the purest, it's not an original Helios? Dave did some extensive mods to this particular console and it is fact, an amazing console! ALL FOR THE BETTER !
As for the ergonomic of Henry's console, it's one of the best, most logical, I've ever seen! I love it..............! Sadly no recent console manufacturers are going back to this basic design, as I think it's one of the best ever~!
Anyhow, I now own more then 40 modules of the reissue Helios type 69's. And during the last few years I have replaced some of the mic pre trannys with 4 different versions, each time trying to get closer to the original "Lustraphone" tranny that I heard a few years ago during the extensive Helios test we did at my place.
After all is said and done, the new reissue Helios tranny is very, very, close to the original, and for me and my "clientele" we are totally blown away by the sound of these modules and couldn't be happier! Then again, everyone is different, so to each his own...
The Helios modules (consoles) have their own thing sonically. And if this is something you are into, then nothing else will do! It's as simple as that........!

Henry's console does NOT have the original trannys! I believe Dave swapped them with something new. But it is a thing of beauty none the less.
Dan's console is now for sale, and was one of the three featured in last months mix magazine. I think you can buy it for a cool $250K.
Such a deal!

AMPs, for the unpowered monitors are:
Perraux - 6000B for the the DynAudio M-2 Mark Levinson 333 for the ProAc, and or the KEF LS-50 Bryston 4B for the Dunlavy SC-IVA
What I forgot to mention in my previous post is when I'm done in the studio room, I burn a disc, and listen to everything in my living room. And in there I have a pair of Wilson Cubs powered by Cary 300B Signature, single ended triode mono block amps. Along with a Cary pre-amp, a Mark Levinson 36c Convertor and a Wadia CD Disc turntable.
Gives me a good overview of everything I did that day.

Eric, These little KEF's are very interesting speakers. I very much dig the concentric thing, and the reviews on these speakers were fabulous across the board. So I bought them without hearing them.
Was confused a bit by them in the beginning, but funny enough, I just mixed a few things on them and just them, as I was changing my big monitors to the Unity Boulder and only had the KEF's hooked up for a week. I must say, probably some of the best mixes that have come out of my new room. Totally amazed by the end product. They don't play too loud, but resting on the meter bridge it's not a big deal. Initially I was hearing too much bass, so I filled the port plugs with the supplied foam plugs, and now they translate wonderfully. Very cool !
Keith, Yes, I had the very last NEW set of "Big Reds"that was Bob Berliners personal pair, but didn't have room for them any longer... Mainly due to lack of space here in the new place.
They really looked cool, but were terrible speakers for anything serious! I liked my Urie 813, 815's and Tannoy FSM much better!

Although the EarthWorks 3 mic kit (DFK-1 or DFK-2) is something special! If used in the proper room, with the correct drummer! And if leakage is NOT a problem. But they also make a few different close mic kits for those who prefer to mic drums close up and personal!

Martin, First of all the song and the performance sound great! Are there things I would change in the mix? Sure but a lot of this is subjective...artist choice No? Sonics, once again who knows what the band or artist vision was? Does the tune move you? Is there anything really wrong?
Ya know, I listen to music all the time. Some of the stuff is from artists known, but I also listen to new artists, all the time.
That being said, I often wonder why the hell did they do that, or why is the vocal so damn loud, why is the kick buried, etc, etc, etc... But hey, ultimately that's what they (the artist) wanted and approved!
The engineer in me, always loves a high quality recording / production. But maybe because I'm a bit older now. The music lover in me, always picks the song, over the sonics and production! I think if the average listener (Joe Q public) gets moved by a tune, then mission accomplished! The sonics should be the best we can make them, but......a good song..................!

Frank, Yes, you are correct, but with positioning, and the proper choice of mic, you can enhance the good stuff, and avoid a lot of the annoying cymbal bleed etc. It really depends on the drummer, the room, and the tune. After a while you will be able to choose the right mic, position, and even compressor for the song to achieve the desired effect.
