Really depends on what I'm going for in the particular song. If I want width, then it's usually a spaced pair of U87's, or 414's as far as I can get them from the drums. Sometime high up to the ceiling, and other times close to the floor. For more punch, and a bit of space, I will usually place a Royer SF-12 about 10 feet out in front of the kit, about 36 inches off the floor. Now if I really want to add punch, I will use a Coles 4038 about 3 feet in front, again about 36 inches off the floor. And with all, I will filter, compress, & crush to taste.

Yes, And that's part of the reason I posted... I like John, and many of you purchased a new Apollo last year...(in my case a Apollo16) I figured, maybe I should see what this plug in shit is all about. (as up to this point never used anything but my outboard gear!) So I purchased this Apollo thing, listened to it for a week or so, and wasn't too happy. SO what did I do...throw more money at it, (about $1000) and had Black Lion make it more sonically pleasing. OK, so far so good...
(Now I know we all need to have digital convertors in this brave new world, but since 1996 I had been exclusively recording & mixing with my Radar units, and this was really not up to par with them!)
But hey the Apollo has PLUGIN's .. Ok, so I start using a few plugin;s and quickly find out, #1 - that NONE of them sound like my hardware versions of the same unit. #2 - that the few that really sound decent (at least to me) Judging them on their own sonic merits use soooooo much DSP that I can use about 8 units and the damn thing craps out!!!
Basically, I understand it's allure, it's cheaper then hardware, multiple instances (sometimes) recallable, etc, etc, etc.
But I gotta tell ya, I think anyone buying into this shit, has taken a sip of the Cool Aide! It's the total dumbing down of our industry....mentally and sonically. We're just adding to an already disposable society.
I mean in a few years, what am I talking about, in less then a year at best... What are today's plug in's gonna be worth? What a waste of time, and money...
From now on, I'm gonna buy as little computer / digital crap as I need to make my studio work, and sound they way I want it to. NOT ONE THING MORE!

Anything we buy that is computer driven will be obsolete in 6 months....and or worth pennies on the dollar. Buy what ya need to work and make / capture your music, and Don't loose sleep over the rest of this bullshit. This will never change, and if anything it's only gonna get worse.
That's why to this day, I try to spend as little as possible on anything computer based! Still spend most of my money on analog Hardware, Mic's and Monitors. If you buy right, you will loose hardly anything, and sometimes the values go up, and up!

I purchased the HD-1's when they were first released, and had them updated by Meyer a few years later. If there ever was a problem, as Eric said they'd have to go back for the fix and recalibration. A very expensive proposition. For me they were $6000 NS-10's....and I HATE NS-10's !
And Eric is also correct about the PMC speakers..you either love them or hate what they do. That transmission Line thing is pretty specific. Now that being said, the PMC AML-1 or 2's are fabulous! But very expensive!

"+1 Just bought a Radar V ( 24/96 converters ) to hook up to the rebuilt Harrison console with tons of real outboard gear and mics. Just need to finish the studio rebuild and make music."
This will change your life... It's back to making music, the good ole fashioned way!

John, Yep, that's my concern, as I would be placing myself in an already crowded market. Obviously, you never know till ya get there, but it is a big concern. And once in place, do I look to work in other established joints, or set up shop for myself? Lot's of things to think about.
PS.... didn't Dave Cobb sell his Manor mobile Helios? I know it was up for sale cause I almost bought it. Although I believe all the modules had been removed, so he might still have them?

Hey Wiz... The recording that the movie is about, John did about 5 years ago. It's called...."No better then this" It was produced by T Bone, and was recorded using a single Ribbon Mic....and released in MONO! Pretty damn cool, especially in today's market.
They moved the players around in each location till they got the perfect blend and went for it.
I heard there was a PA used for some of the recordings, and the PA might have reverb or a delay on it. But that was captured along with the vocal and band in the one mic.
I bought the record the day it was released as I was eager to hear what they captured using only one mic, and a mono Tube tape recorder.
And I love it. Some of the tunes sound better then others, but for the most part it's great!
More info here... No Better Than This is an album by American singer-songwriter and musician John Mellencamp, produced by T Bone Burnett, that was released on August 17, 2010. The album was recorded at several historic locations throughout the United States. The title track was the album's first single and was sent to multiple radio formats on June 28, 2010.
Mellencamp said that the album is "as American folk as I've ever been." He also told Rolling Stone in July 2009 that he's not concerned whether or not there's a large audience for such a raw, simple record. "I am done being a rock star," Mellencamp said. "I have no interest in that, in having the biggest concerts. I have only one interest: to have fun while we’re doing this and maybe have something that somebody might discover."
Rolling Stone placed No Better Than This No. 12 on its list of the best albums of 2010.
Mellencamp wrote over 30 songs for potential inclusion on the album but only 13 made the final cut. He debuted the first of those, "Save Some Time to Dream," on May 17, 2009 at a political fundraiser for President Barack Obama at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. "It's about individual freedom and thought—and controlling our own lives," Mellencamp said of "Save Some Time to Dream," which he performed solo on acoustic guitar throughout much of his 2009 summer tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.
During breaks on the Nelson/Dylan tour, Mellencamp recorded No Better Than This at historic locations, such as the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia as well as at the historic Sun Studios in Memphis and the Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, where blues pioneer Robert Johnson recorded blues staples like “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Cross Road Blues.” Mellencamp recorded the album using a 1955 Ampex portable recording machine and only one microphone, requiring all the musicians to gather together around the mic. The album was recorded in mono, the same manner as the classic folk and blues recordings of the 1930s and '40s.
Mellencamp wrote one song specifically for Room 414 at the Gunter Hotel, which is the exact room where Johnson recorded in November 1936. He told the San Antonio Express-News, "It's called 'Right Behind Me' or 'Right Behind Us,' I haven't decided yet. I wrote it just for this room. I could have done this in my studio. But I want to do it this way, and if I can't do what I want at this point, I'm not going to do it. If it's not fun, I'm not going to do it. I'm through digging a ditch."
"John is a really great singer and I'm always happy working with him in any environment," T Bone Burnett told the Express-News. "The fact he chose these historic locations is a big plus. The stories that have come out of the sessions are extraordinary. The First African Baptist Church was started in 1775. It was an important stop on the Underground Railroad and central to the civil rights movement. Sun Studio, from a completely different angle, was also important to the civil rights movement and, from another angle, so were Robert Johnson's recordings at the Gunter."
During Mellencamp's session at Sun Studios in late July 2009, he recorded several songs, including "Each Day of Sorrow," "No One Cares About Me," "The West End," and "Easter Eve," which Rolling Stone magazine's David Fricke compared to "one of Bob Dylan's talking blues." Regarding this session, Mellencamp told the magazine, "[T Bone] and I were laughing. We got five songs here last night. We asked ourselves, ‘What the fuck were we doing in the 70s and 80s, spending days and days on a drum sound, when it was all right here the whole time?’"
"Everything was set up exactly as Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley recorded. They had 'X' marks made with electrical tape on the floor where Elvis and his musicians stood and where the instruments were placed, because Sam Philips walked around the room and decided where everything sounded best."
Mellencamp wanted to record at the now-derelict Brunswick Records Building in Dallas, where Robert Johnson cut his final sessions in 1937, but the current owner of the building denied him permission to record there.
As for the organic recording process of the album, Mellencamp says it's unique for this day and age. “The same mic I was singing into is the same mic that recorded the drums at the same time,” Mellencamp said on his website. “And everything was cut live with no overdubs or studio nothing! These are real songs being performed by real musicians—an unheard-of process in today’s world. Real music, for real people!”
Mellencamp has said in interviews to promote the album that the song "The West End" is not about a certain part of town but rather about America, which is the west end of the world.

Eric baby… The Sony mic, as it a pretty good bet it's value will rise in the next few years. Plus it's a great option to have in your locker~!
As we say in the old neighborhood "It's a beautiful thing"

M57, Haha It's gear! I love that.
I'm very far out in the country... Got plenty of room for a Snow blower, but absolutely NO DESIRE to ever leave the house, to shovel, plow, snow blow, or what have you. I gotta say, as it is, I only go out to shovel when clients are coming to the studio, and or to get the car out for the old lady to get to work. THAT'S IT! Otherwise, and I kid you not, I would NOT step outside till MAY.

Ya know today I was thinkin...
Once again after last nights snow fall, I found myself outside shoveling snow. Literally for the tenth time this month. And I hear there is more on the way..
Now I have to inform all of you, I hate the snow, no actually I despise the cold, the winter and the damn snow! Always have... But for some reason, I've stayed in NY. I guess family and friends, and the biz was good for quite a while. (although I did actually move to Miami way back in 1980, but it wasn't for me!) Funny thing is I really love the small village where I live, at least for 8 months a year. Dec - March they can keep.
Also the biz up where I am, has slowed considerably in the last 5 or so years. So it just might be time for a change..
So I figured, I'd pose this question to all of you... Do any of you know of a nice area to move to, (in the States) in a more temperate climate, where an old curmudgeon like me can set up shop and make some music, and live?
I still need to work, other wise I'd close up shop here and head south for 4 months every year, but sadly, I'm not in a financial position where the old lady & I can leave town without working for so long every year.
I've just started looking at these areas: Nashville, Asheville NC, Charlotte SC, New Orleans, and will look into Austin later... These seem obvious, what if any am I missing?
Basically all I need is a house big enough to put all my crap in, and get to work. Don't really need two spaces, as I'm kinda diggin the in home setup I have now. As long as it's legal and possible where I end up.
SO let me know, if you guys have any ideas.. I really do need some input on this.... Thanks guys
