Something Larry just posted on Facebook, and worth noting for those of us interested in the Z-Mod line, this album was recorded primarily with ADK TT Tube mics. Some were custom per Ray's requested tweaks. These mics are the precursor to the current Z-Mod Line.

I have a stam 47 which I really like but have never heard a stam 73 I used an early version of it and liked it. Just ordered his 1073MP. I’ll let everyone know what I think of the sound once I get it. I don’t use my 1073’s EQ enough to justify buying another full channel strip, although I would love a pair of BAE 1084s, but the price tag is heavy.

I wish I'd kept my Blackspade UM-17B and R. The B was a dead ringer for an M49, the R was like an M49 and U47 had a baby. Our T1 is like a love child from the U47 and M49. Robust, huge but calm and controlled. The BM49 is indistinguishable from the original c version of the M49 (my favourite revision) Hey Ben, what is the difference between your Tribute 4 microphone and the BM49? I see there are some component differences per their descriptions. How do those differences change them sonically? Once I’ve got my new studio together I need to get a few more of your mics in here to try out.

As someone who hasn't ever had the opportunity to use M49s, but plans on building a pair in the next year, what do you all find they excel at? Please incorporate why you'd reach for it instead of another canonical like 87 or 67, MLA formatting, 500 words or less, due Monday. (I'm sure this has been asked ad nauseum before, but haven't come across it on this site / community.) 49’s have robustness in the vein of a U47, with a bit more focus. They have a deep low end, but it’s not exaggerated. It’s also a bit more mellow on the top. It’s basically a more neutral, and in my opinion, accurate 47. The U67 is even more neutral and more focused. It seems to cut a bit better than the 49, but it isn’t as open. Want a big solo sax, the 49 is dynamite. That same sax might compete too much with a lead vocal though, cause it’s going to sound big. in which case the 67 might be a better choice. This is why I tend to keep 67s and 49 style mics around. I find they compliment each other.

Acoustic guitar and vocals were both done on the Blue Baby Bottle on this track. I didn’t do anything on this recording, but was in the room for some of the tracking.

It may be time to just grab his MPA. I need (2) more preamps to fill out my 8 input rig.

bricejchandler it’s funny you say that about the Neves. I have the DPX and have found that clarity really helps my voice out, but I have been feeling it’s just too open for Emily’s vocals. I’m still itching to grab a BAE at some point. Maybe I’ll just grab and MPF. Might switch back to my Dan Alexander 1272 on Emily.

If someone can get the rights to manufacture the Woodpecker ribbon mic and somehow lower the noise floor, that would be great. I thought it was just me. I recently realized just how noisy it is.

I always liked this recording done with the Cactus. No idea what the processing is on it.... I can tell what wasn't used: a de-esser. Has the world gone deaf? No pop filter either, which probably didn't help.

So the B11 was similar in tone to... The Max Mod on 87ai/TLM67? Chris Yes.

That was a fantastic summary,. Thanks!! There were 10 capsules altogether. B0 and B8 pique my curiosity as they are both similar LDCs, supposedly. Any thoughts on these? B2 - Figure Eight Large Diaphragm B3 - Cardioid Mid-Size Diaphragm B4 - Perspex Sphere Pressure Omni Small Diaphragm B5 - Pressure Omni Large Diaphragm And what was the B9 supposed to be? Anyone? Bueller? The B4 was their M50 style cap. I had a pair with my Bottle Rocket Stage 1s. I thought they were fantastic in the room. The B0 was really nice on my voice if I wanted a really bright pop sound. It was just too bright on a lot of other vocals. The B6 is totally like a tweaked out U67. Much more open on the top end, but really nice in some ways. It worked better on more voices than the B0. I liked the B7 on my Bottle Rocket Stage II, but it’s more mellow than the FleA 47 I tried it next to. Still, it was my 47 style mic for a while. From clips I heard I think it sounded better on the Bottle Rocket Stage II than the Bottle. I too loved the B1. I actually thought my voice sounded stellar on it, especially when I sang opera through it. The new capsules were: B9: C800G B10: M49 (sounded more like an M149 to me) B11: U67. I liked this one a lot. It was a little dark, but had that vintage 67 thing going for it. I recorded a whole EP with all vocals on it. You can hear that here: schaeburmusic.wixsite.com/voyages/media

It’s good. I’m still not sure it’s as good as the UAD Pultec, but it’s comparable. Remember to flip the analogue button.

Wasn't there a connection between Blue & JZ? Violet microphones, which became JZ. I believe they were their initial OEM manufacturer. When they moved on and Violet started manufacturing their own versions of BLUE's microphones. BLUE sued them and won. They had to stop producing the mics that BLUE had on their roster. The Violet lollipops will work on the BLUE Bottles, and people seem to like them very much.

It's really a shame. I like the Dragonflies the few times I got to use them, and was also very close to getting a Cactus at one point, but found a great deal on a refurbished CMV563 with M7. That was me. I was looking for a deal on a Cactus and found one on a Pearlman TM1 with Neumann and Telefunken parts... no brainer.

I think many of us saw the writing on the wall well before this was official, but here it is. BLUE microphones are no more. This article came out earlier this summer, so I'm probably late to the party.
I know BLUE had a divisive beginning due to their "restoration" of older mics. I came into BLUE mics later when I got myself in front of a BLUE Kiwi. We had it next to my U87ai, and were shooting it out with a breathy, female blues vocalist. I of course had to try it. It seemed both less honky in the mid range and cleaner sounding over all. We were all impressed with it.
When I built my first rig, my cousin, who at the time was a professional mastering engineer out here in NY, helped me put it together and recommended a few pieces of gear as I grew; a Dan Alexander Preamp, a BLUE Cactus, or a BLUE Bottle with all the main vocal capsules. He had worked at well known studio which had plenty of vintage mics, but had seen them loose out to the BLUE mics for one reason or another on various projects or at least BLUE kept up with the classics.
I never managed to grab a Cactus, and probably don't need one now. I only ended up with the BLUE Bottle Rocket Stage II. I do wish I had grabbed the Bottle at some point. I still may if I can nab a deal on one, but then you have to track down all the capsules. It's hard to justify it when you can grab 4 or 5 mics from companies like BeesNeez for the same cost. I still own my BLUE Woodpecker, which seems to feels like a middle ground between a Ribbon and a Condenser. I've been present for some fantastic acoustic guitars recorded with the BLUE Baby Bottle, and heard a fantastic sax recording done at the same studio with the BLUE Dragonfly. I think they had some good mics, but the budget mic range is what sold, and it is a shame. Oh, well.

Only the Yeti is left. All other Blue Microphones out of Production sadly. Chris Really, I didn’t know that. I was also about echo Ward and say the Blue Kiwi. I’m so glad I bought another one a few years ago having bought one and then sold it and really missed having one around. They’re a really great multi pattern mic. I also echo the Blue Kiwi and add through a good tube preamp. A Kiwi through a Demeter VTMB is an amazing vocal chain for that application.

It’s heading north of me, and should just be rainy by me. It will hit around 2am, so we’ll see what happens. Stay high and dry my friend. I hate the “I” storms. Thanks. I’ve weathered my share of hurricanes while on Long Island, so I’m prepared.

I’ve never used a Pearlman mic but have held them in high regard based off of an album I mixed where the TM1 was used. I also thought the TM1 was the cream of the crop in the Vintage King 47 shootout years ago. That was a huge shock to me at the time! I’d love to hear more about any differences between the TM1 & TM47 from anyone with both. I think it’s the TM47 in that video, and the FleA 47 and the TM47 were my favorites in that video. That and the clips from Audio Test Kitchen of the Church mic is why I started looking at the Pearlman to begin with. I just kind of fell into my TM-1.
