I agree on the price. It is 900 dollars here, with the SSL 4000. I didn't pay that, I got mine used, which was a much better price, from someone on the *other message board.
Granted, people pay 500 for the SSL from waves, so with that said,that would be 3-400 for the controller, which considering the size of the company, isn't a bad price. The artist mix was 1300...

This does look really cool, but the million dollar question....how does it sound? Have you compared the eq and comp against other top plugs? UAD? Slate? Waves? How about the TD? Have you compared it to the elysia or SPL? Do the other Softube plugins work with the controller? (Cl1b, FET, etc...) My only gripe with the controller is I wish the fader was a motorized touch fader like my faderport and not a rotary control. There are a bunch of youtube videos including comparisons to the UAD and Waves SSL plugs, nobody has ever complained once about the sound of it. I have used TD, and it's so easy to just dial the amount in you want, it works the same. Softube sells a TD separately too, I figure it's probably the same thing, it's a 2 knob punch/sustain deal.
All of the other softube plugins work. I have the time and tone bundle thanks to the focusrite partnership, so I've been using the drawmer plugin as the compressor on my 2 bus to see how I can deal. You can swap out any eq or compressor and it just shows the knobs that correlate and can be used.
I see the level fader as a makeup gain knob for the compressor section, and not a fader. I have an actual fader for that. Modern digital resolution isn't an issue really in my eyes with 24bit (and 32 bit float if you like to get fancy)
Since I use the artist mix, I don't have to use my mouse to select what track, but you can jog over individual faders on the faderport just the same and then adjust that level?
I feel like I hijacked this thread, and I'm sorry, but I know how many questions I had about the console 1 and getting an OTB feel with ITB plugs. We are all searching for it. It does take me a second to think about where I want to put in my reverb aux fader plugin, but I just put the console 1 plugin 2nd from the top, so if I want to add a harmonic distortion plug or the puigtec for warmth on any track I can do that pre or post console. Granted, there's the harmonic distortion built into the console 1 as well, so I don't really do that either anymore.
my only gripe, is that there isn't a "maximize window" button so I can dedicate my second monitor to the console 1 view. I have to resize it. But recently I just let it take over the main screen since I don't ever go outside of it once I've started mixing.

I've been pretty interested in Console 1 for a while. Seems like the best of both worlds, but I've read about it being buggy. Are you on Pro Tools? I think the common complaint is that the controller doesn't follow the highlighted track in the DAW, meaning, you click on track 1 in the DAW, start turning knobs, and you're actually turning track 7 because you didn't click the physical button for 1 on the controller. Is that right? Have you come across any issues, problems, concerns? A lot of people want to use console 1 like it's a plugin. There's this whole group of people angry about the follow track thing. What they need to do is let go of their mouse and use console 1 like you're supposed to!
Yes, I am using it with PT 11.3.1 left hand - select the channel (they are numbered, and it shows the track name and number at the bottom of the screen, so it's not like you're looking all over for this), then with your right hand, turn the knob you're trying to change. Simple. you can add the drive to every track by just flipping buttons one after another and turning the knob, takes 30 seconds, instead of opening and closing 15-20 plugins, navigating your mouse, moving it too far, then too short, or what I always find, you have to click and drag some other direction.
the only thing that frustrates me is if I want to change the order of the tracks. If you add an aux, you add it, then have to move the order in console 1. But again, it's uber simple. Just go to settings "change track order" (don't quote me), and you turn the knob to find the new place. As long as you do one at a time or conscious, it's mind numblingly simple.
I can understand why people would want to do the "follow track", but it's far from necessary. I think the thought is that plugins are king, but if they were, they wouldn't be buying console 1. There is a hole in the logic if you're using it like a plugin, it's supposed to be used like ...a console! I've been trying to mix solely with the console to see what I can do before crutching up and reaching for something outside of it, and it's a lot of fun. Quick too. With the transient shaper, I didn't own the TD plug, so it saved me 100 bucks (on sale). I can also say that every email question I sent has been answered really quickly and thoughtfully. The kind of support you'd want for your products.
I use it with an artist mix and level balance, then go through the tracks for any eq/compression, using the level on the console 1 as makeup gain for any compression.
The idea that it's buggy is wrong, it's workflow desires and loud people. I haven't ever had a problem with it running, but I also started using it this year, and not 2 years ago when it was first introduced.

Well of course! That's the whole point - console feel with a software recall/plugin. You get the SSL 4000 WITH the hardware. You can also get the SSL 9000 emu. Their SSL stuff is great, so to have a neve desk really completes it in my eyes. Some folks try to use it as a plugin, but the plugin style interface is cumbersome; I wouldn't be surprised if it was on purpose. You can probably get a demo license and try it without the controller, but I think the investment in a used one is totally worth it at the right price. The less I can think about choosing plugins and more about getting the song right the better!

Not a ton of info, other than it'll be a 1073,1084 eq and the 54 compressor. it'll be nice to have the SSL OR Neve flavors across the board. That pretty well sums up most plugins I use anyway.

I'm starting to feel like a pitchman - but I never worked on analog consoles except for running live sound at a theater for a few years. Most of that was just pushing up and down a fader, so even then it wasn't detailed. I got softubes console 1 used the other day and have been going through old mixes just trying to mix through it, and I'm finding it to be a lot more fun and am able to balance out harmonies a lot easier than when I'm trying to push through 3 different plugin windows. It's a good mix of being able to use your hands to find the spot on the track but have the recall. I'm looking forward to the neve console they're about to release. I do think that adding an OTB 2 bus is a good idea, because you can mostly set it and forget it, but I can't even imagine how much time it would take to recall the same mix from a recall sheet. Dr Bill, your toneamp is on my shortlist!

I'm a huge fan of the "mix notes from hell" podcast - definitely give it a shot! They bill it as an "around the water cooler discussion" with a bunch of guys who work in different parts of the business. Big projects, small projects, guest producer/engineers come in like Matt Wallace. Really cool.

There's an old saying: You've got 20 years to write your first album - 6 months to write your next.
Even with that said, "time of your life" by Green Day - arguably one of their biggest hits - is a song written from their Kerplunk days - before Dookie was even a thought, and then released 3 albums later.
Usually you can get 2 or 3 albums out of the songs from one era where you're writing a lot, but then you eventually have to write more stuff while dealing with modern stresses that happen - kids, spouse, management, touring fatigue.. But everyone's right, that people are signed for one sound, but then nobody wants to be known for their "one sound", just like nobody wants to be known as that band that writes "3 chord wonders". Writers that have written 50-100 songs in one style and then try to branch out to a new sound end up trying to do something that they haven't practiced as much. When regular rock bands go and try to write their "concept album", they've never written such a thing before, and a lot of times it'll come out like anyone's first attempt at something. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! Mostly it doesn't!
I get chided all the time about my music not sounding the same anymore like it's a bad thing. Newsflash - it's on purpose. My drummer gave me a task the other day though - write a song like I used to write and see if it's as good as the old ones were. Who knows, maybe pop punk isn't dead much longer?

A buddy just got a hairball bluestripe off of reverb or ebay for 600, probably a deal of the century, but it spices up that snare he puts it on like whoa. I may have to dip into that blue stripe honey jar once I finish up my stereo channels
oh, there's also the 1176 style colour palette option - that gives you some real cool options. it's a nice way to bring in an extra 76 style for 100 bucks (plus the palette)

Keep in mind, that you can get a wa76 pretty quick with free shipping usually from a well known candy retailer - 2 days is my experience, and if you like it, keep it - if you don't - return it and spend more of your money. I've been happy with my wa76, my eqp-wa as well as my TB12. I'm curious as to your final decision though!
