I tend to use autotune when demoing out a song pretty severely, because I don't want a bad note in a in a pass to detract from what I'm TRYING to do on my final. A lot of times I'm actually using it to try different chord variations by just literally moving the notes up and down instead of re-singing 6 voices over and over I think I'm actually going to do less chord type "oo's" in the future and start using an Organ Virtual instrument. Waves Tune is my demo time saver. I'm okay with it. Smoothing out a 5 second vocal chord "oo" can either make it or ruin it by making it obvious.
I have also ruined my wife in pointing out where the autotune is on every song. I think people mistake autotune artifacts for "air" on a vocal. John Mayer keeps killing his voice with autotune. His live recording specials I've seen, like concerts at Madison square.. I think Buble is the worst with it though. These guys don't need it, but the casual listener now doesn't know what a real voice sounds like, so that if you DO do a real voice, it's not going to sound "real"...

That's only 138511 plays per hour for a regular work week of 40 hours, 32,888 plays per hour on a 365 day rotation. Checking my spotify totals for January: nothing, no wait February. dammit no. Okay. March! 47 cents baby! You must be rich LOL.... Before I wrote them to take it down mine was 0,06 Cent WOW. Fuck you Spotify why should I give them content for free.
My laughable hope is that it will bring someone new to a show in the future. Then i'll make my 4 dollars off of their ticket, maybe 5 bucks on an album if I can convince them!
By not being on there, if someone who is a spotify listener looks it up, it wouldn't be on there, and I think that's worse than the payment. If you need the exposure, or customer justification that you're legit (I do), you eat the money you're losing/not making.

I was really hoping to save some money this month but the console 1 neve console has been released.. I'll demo it first, but I can definitely hear a difference on the demo clips!

Cabling costs are the worst. one thing less sexier than buying 500 racks. I am buying xlr cable and connectors in bulk very very soon.

I think I just fell in love with the API 2500. Shit. I sold mine and got a second pair of Tonelux TX5C's. Ha! you and Johnkenn are kindred spirits in that regard. Let's face it, I think we all are!

The biggest thing is having a desk. I could be totally out of the box (other than filters I guess) with my mix rig, but I choose to work hybrid. I have a desk full of eq, 24 channels of outboard compressors, 12 channels of outboard eq (plus 8 channels of tilt eq and 4 channels of AirBand), a TC stereo reverb, and 2 TC delay units. Smoking deals are your friend. 24 channels of outboard compressors? like 160's, stereo pairs? care to enlighten me? that's a lot of compressors.
It's amazing how hard it is to comprehend how complicated it all can be!
I wish I'd never sold my tango 24 ad/da. It may be old, but at least it gave me the io for outboard, without having any pre's to bypass. the presonus dp88 looks really good, but that's 700 bucks I'd rather spend on another pair of capi pre's

So there's the ITB, OTB, HYBRID arguments.
But then there are people like me who started their recording career on a TASCAM 4 track > SoundBlaster creative with N-Track world in 1998-99...
I have never known what it's like to work in an OTB world and probably never will. I get intrigued and am working on a hybrid 2 bus + ITB method. I am building a good set of pre's to supplement my generic interface pre's for big duties. I understand why people do one vs the other vs the other, but realistically.. If I was to actually mix a record completely OTB, with all this make believe AD/DA I'd need; what would the gear be I would need?
Would I focus on having a desk with eq's, 2 or 3 mono compressors and 3-4 stereo compressors? 1 or 2 stereo eq's as well? Ignore the recall problems, let's focus on making a modern mix. How many reverbs? Delays?
I am trying to put in focus what it would be like to purchase that with today's money, maybe not cheaply, but more in the DIY/Prosumer cost point, where you could do a modern record radio friendly non-EDM record - say Muse or Foo Fighters or Mumford & Sons.
I am imagining needing 3-4 1176's, an LA-2a, a stereo pair of LA-3A's (thanks to GAP and warm audio this fits the pro-sumer cost level), don classics 250 eq's for a GML 8200, 2 EQP-WA's
How realistic would it be to actually purchase all of this? Would it be something you would even do? I'm figuring 20-30k in units alone to make 1k of plugins on Black Friday, with the infinite instatiations..
Is this why the hybrid method was born? best of both worlds? Are we all chasing ghosts here? This feels heavy for a Friday.

FYI Funny thing I have built 2 of them. Those Guage mic recently and turned them into. Made Stereo pair of 87, they turned out better than thuoght. So it. Could be. Done I'm confused - Anthony Kilhoffer - “I used the Gauge ECM87 to record Kanye West and really liked it. You can check the track on iTunes. It is called "Forever".
These mics are 150 bucks each. Are you guys doing something to them or do these Chinese mics really shine? Or is this some sort of elaborate joke that I don't get?

But Arrows loo so kewl on cables ! I really want a cable full of positrons. The radiation sickness and cancer would show everyone that I don't compromise and use only the best cables.
We in the biz call that "analog warmth"

For some reason ITB there's a huge amount of second guessing. It might be my inexperience as an engineer, or it might actually be the digital thing getting in my way. That's called "having too many options" getting in your way. If all you had was a desk, 3 compressors, board EQ and a reverb.. how would you mix it?
would you mix it the same way? if you had the option of saying 'well, that's the best I can do with what I have" and seriously believe it, you'd probably feel better about what you just did.

I think before I can say ITB vs OTB, I need to mix 100 records in both. Plus, by that point I should know what the hell I'm doing

So I am looking through this - I thought the don classics nv73's were for use with a 51X rack only? It looks like you can run these in any 500 series rack, and you just do a few different connections one way or the other?
Am I seeing this wrong? I know that TRUE neve's are 24v.. but passed that (and the +- 16v = 32v), it'll work?

Behold, what is impossible to find with a mere Google search..
Notice the tranny is pretty much the size of that TRS jack, if you want to add some scale to it.
Looks fine to me. Have you seen inside those Marinaire/St. Ives transformers from the old neve designs? Maybe half to a quarter the size of that transformer. Old Beyer transformers used in tape machines and consoles? Maybe an 8th the size.. Inside of a Jensen transformer? maybe half that size.. Inside of a Lundahl? Again, maybe half the size. The size is reasonable and there should be NO reason to think that a huge transformer means better fidelity. Only transformer construction and materials really affect frequency response, if the transformer is designed well. Larger conductors and core only really affect power handling. Since we're working in very small power ranges, this transformer is likely overkill for a DI, but I'm sure they use it across all their product lines, so they use it here as well. They use it so you can plug a solid state 10000w amp in if you want. Thanks for the clarification. I guess compared to other DI's it's a "big honkin transformer" but not compared to the ones I've seen in most other $400+ devices

Plus, if you have to raise money really quickly, try selling those plugins! Plugins are mostly a sunk cost. That's what keeps me from doing any subscription. Hardware exists as a real entity in this world. An empirical item for sale!
My next 400 is gonna be to get a GSSL, because that looks like a fun build!

Maybe I'm ignorant to something (totally possible), but it seems that you can plug your headphone jack from your camera, or another external analog signal, and then you play it through your headphones..
why not just listen to the signal straight from the headphone jack? you're not bypassing any "inferior" DA, which would be maybe the biggest difference in signal?
And why are they showing a rack of 500 series boards in mid-assembly instead of the RNHP in assembly in that video? I doubt they're plugging these boards in and spending money on a big socket like that. I think I know why though..
When I opened up my RNDI, I was told I'd find a "big honking transformer" by a guy who works for a midsized clone company. Instead, I found a little baby transformer, like one you'd find on a colour palette, surrounded by about 15 SMT parts. I was pretty disheartened by that. It was my first piece of Neve gear, and was shocked by the overall "non-neve" piece of kit I received. End of the day, it sounds fine.
BTW, that black case that they enclose these pieces in, probably weighs 5 pounds on its own. Once those smt parts, plastic board and thumbnail sized transformer are out on their own, it feels as expensive as a portable boom box without any D batteries in it.
