VERY happy with my Gefell M-300. No output transformer, but it still manages to sound warm and natural. It tickles my senses

As we're chatting about 84-ish type mics, here's a recent recording I did with my stereo Soyuz SU-013 Pair on nylon fingerpicked guitar - completely raw and unprocessed. The left channel is the mic on the body and right channel is on pointing toward the neck near the body. Both mics approximately 12-18 inches away. The loud plucks from this guitar player normally hurt like bad sibilance - but the Soyuz handled it very nicely in a similar way I've heard the KM-84 handle transients. Mic Preamps were a pair of Great River MP-500v's. Although this wav file is raw, in the mix it took EQ and compression beautifully. Soyuz SU-013 Stereo Pair on Nylon Guitar

Similar in tone to my nylon guitar track in a song you are working on now. Except that was KM84s. The Soyuz seems to hate a heavy thumbnail and middle finger upstroke (as I have a tendancy to do) even moreso than a KM84. I find one can overcome this to a certain degree (with a KM84) by positioning the microphone 12" from the body, aligned at the 14th fret, 6" above and aimed down, but then aimed about 5-7 degrees away from the plucking hand.

I’ll listen to that track with that in mind - your playing sounds nice my friend. This player plays really heavy thumbnails and upstrokes at times... so it is pretty noticeable on those notes. My mic placement is very similar to yours... but 8degrees instead, lol. Seriously, I didn’t mess a whole lot with placement here and could have reduced the effect of those hard notes with a different mic placement. Hindsight is 20/20

I just ordered two new KK84 capsules from Neumann in Germany, been wanting to do it for a while, but the fact that these WA84s will use interchangeable capsules scared me into doing it now, in before the rush! It shouldn't be too hard to flip the old KK84s on Reverb to prospective new WA84 owners. Just a heads up for anyone else wanting to buy new KK84s from Neumann, I was told they will now only sell to companies, not individuals. I had to supply details of my business etc. Now what I am wondering, is when will Warm have Omni caps available, that I could use on my KM84 bodies?

Right, probably. I should have asked if they have KK83s too. I have a feeling they may not any more.

Ah, thanks for that info! Might have to get a couple of the 83s at some stage too then. What are the 85s, the "bass roll off" cardioids?

The Warm mic is what, 400? And the capsule is 600? Not much more and you’d have a legit KM84. Nice ones do pop up. I grabbed a mint pair of consecutive numbered KM84’s from an old timer who was retiring. Paid a few hundred more than what you’re paying. And at least with the Neumann’s, you’re not going to lose money on depreciation. You probably won’t get your money back out of these. Or just grab the Soyuz mics. Kind of thinking on that myself and pocketing some money. Didn’t mean to rain on your parade, though. I hope they sound great for you!

I already have a consecutive serial number pair of KM84s from 1977. Bought them last summer for €700 each. But the capsules were from different eras, one very early (no markings, assuming 60's or early 70's), one much later (like you see the new ones now). They sound a little different and I want a closer matched pair. I had the bodies checked out and serviced and matched by an ex-Neumann tech in Germany (Andreas Grosser), and have been meaning to buy two new KK84 capsules from Neumann since then. It's just that this new Warm 84 thing got me scared everyone would start jumping on the KK84s from Neumann as an upgrade, so I thought I'd better buy them finally. Taking into account the 2 x mic cost, service cost, 2 x new KK84 cost, plus money back from flipping the old KK84s, all in all I'll have a well matched pair of KM84s for about €1900, which is worth it to me! I'm not interested in any of the clones as none of the ones I have tried came close. The closest was the Warbler 127 C-Flat, but I sold it soon after getting the KM84s as it was obviously inferior, to these ears. I predict the same for the Warms. As someone around here often says, it's all about the capsule!

Well I can see 2 reasons for going the Warm with Neumann capsules route. While KM84’s are not hard to find a pair that matches up well is and a pair of warms is about the price of a KM85. Second you can start out with the Warm and Upgrade the capsule later and probably match it with another new KK84 later.

I think Vintage King re-sells Neumann capsules. At least they do sell the U87 capsule.
