When I went from 2 way to 3 way the difference was huge! I had to sell mine and I'm back to using NS-10's for now. I'd look at Barefoot and ATC if I had 5G's to work with. I'll have to do some research about Atomic Instrument 610's, never seen or heard them.
* I looked around but couldn't find a price for the Atomic Instrument 610's. Anyone know what they cost?
I personally don't love the retro style, but if it sounds great, that what really counts to me.

5 K I heard them in Nashville and was very impressed and I have the $12.5 K Dutch & Dutch 8Cs which are my favorite at any price these days. The 610s are close minus the cardioid response and room correction abilities. www.atomicintrument.com

I really like the Harvey Gerst designed Tridents, the ones with the swiveling mid/high section.

The Dutch & Dutch 8C is the finest monitor I have used but out of your target range. At 5K I have never heard anything touch the Atomic Instrument 610s.... I know Dave Cobb, Vance Powell and a whole bunch of folks in Nashville have switched to these... I second the Atomic Instrument 610s. For the price you're talking about, I think they're the best you can get. www.atomicinstrument.com/shop/atomic-sixten-studio-monitorsJason

I am also looking to move up to 3-way.
I got A7X a couple of years ago for my home room but now I am in a larger space and I need 3-way. I’m doing great mixes on the A7X’s but for tracking DI bass or giving the band a good vibe they are a little underwhelming :-)
I love the mini-main concept with the Dyn LYD48 and the 18S sub with room correction on the sub. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QjP0Ru6fGUc)
I will likely get the 48’s first and add a sub later.

Here's an interesting choice- a classic 3-way is reborn. What's old is new again: JBL 4312G

We have a demo pair of 8341, and they are stellar. Wide image, ultra separated sounding. the GLM kit is the icing on the cake. Very cool design

Those Atomic monitors are seriously ugly. I'm not even going to lie, I couldn't stare at those in my studio at all, no matter how good they sound. LOL.
I'd rather have active monitors if possible. I'd also like to keep my digital connections to the monitors. I don't want to convert once to analog, and then have the speakers do it again back to digital and then back to analog once again. Most of these higher end speakers seem to have DSP EQ correction rather than analog crossovers. I'm fine with DSP crossovers as I think they can account for tiny nuances that analog filters can't.

Adams new range may well be worth a look - S3V I think it may be called .somewhere around your budget in the States I imagine. All I read says they've put a lot into the new range to win back sceptics.
Not to derail but hopefully my experience may in some way assist. Sold my Amphion 1 x 15 and took a big hit but they just weren't for me - bought on rep without hearing as I live 1500 miles away from stores.
Am interested how I have been swayed by perceived internet vibe against Adam and dismissed them until I heard the A7X ( first Adam experience) alongside Shape 50s in Sydney last week. Two sides of a coin. Adams - revealing and fun ; Shape 50s - more mellow yet a homogenous complete sound. Led me to want to hear Adam's best new nearfield the S2V which I'll do when visiting Melbourne next week.
What i do know from my experience is there's several ways to skin the cat and someone else's experience may not necessarily be yours; take your time, trust your own ears and if at all possible get to use in your own environment for a reasonable period. (But you know all that, right?) Cheers, Ross

So I'm back to thinking about this.
I really like the Neumann KH310D because it's 3 way, has a dome midrange, and has digital input, but some reviews complain about an issue getting guitars sounding right and translating with these. Others say they have no issues at all, but I still keep reading personal accounts with issues with guitars, especially heavy guitars. Multiple people who I don't really know have told me they've had no issues with this, so maybe it was a problem in the past that got fixed, but I've still seen some recent online chatter about problems with guitar translation. I can afford a set of refurbs, which I don't know if I can return or not..
Barefoot MM45 look amazing and the price is good if they're used, but the lack of digital input is a big downer. Also, I want to audition them, but I don't want to borrow them from a retailer just to return them and buy used because I'm not going to pay full retail price..
Focal SM9 or Trio6BE look good to me as well, but again, no digital inputs are a big downer, and again I'm only able to afford used, so tricking a retailer into letting me borrow some to try out and then returning them only to buy used is pretty dishonest and I don't want to do that.
I'm just not a big Adam monitors fan. A friend of mine had some and I couldn't stand the planar tweeter sound at all.
I have a friend bringing some Barefoot footprints by the studio next week to see how big a difference they are from my JBL's and maybe that will help sway me to upgrade or stay with what I have..

Looking forward to hearing what you think of the Footprints. Sometimes I get the itch to switch from my One15's and these are on my list, alongside the MM45's and ATC SCM20's. Also, the LYD48's seem interesting to me. I hear good things about them.

When I went to Funky Junk in London to demo mics (and buy the U67 reissue) I did a short demo of the ATC SCM25A, and compared them to my current monitors which they also had (APS Aeon). The ATC are "annoyingly good", as the sales staff very eloquently put it.

I don't see many used ones either, just a few still out out of reach..

A year later I am still extremely happy with my Dynaudio LYD-48s. The move from two-way to three-way has paid big dividends in sorting out the midrange; and the low end on these speakers is deep and tight and seems to translate reliably well.
I am recording electric roots music--violin, guitar, bass, piano, drums, percussion--and have not noticed any problems with electric guitars. My guitarist noticed a significant difference (for the better) in monitoring the first time we did a session here, and the speakers are very revealing if there is some flaw in the guitar tone.
I have to say this was my best gear purchase in recent months.

I really think you should hear the Atomics before you decide. There is something special about that speaker....
