I may, and that's a big maybe, be looking for some 3way monitors soon.
And by that I mean decent ones.
What ones do you guys know of?

Were you not building a pair?

Were you not building a pair? I am/was. Those are my playtime monitors, and likely going into my living room when done! (If they ever get done). I'm just thinking, and collecting ideas mainly.

No idea what price range you're looking at but I am a huge fan of my Dynaudio LYD48s.

I'd want something that would be the last monitor I ever bought. Something I could compare any speaker I built against, or know that any mix would be right..

I would take a close look at Tyler Acoustics. They’ve become quite popular with mastering engineers. The designer/builder sells direct to the consumer so there is no dealer markup and they are a great bargain.
I’ve got the D2X’s and they are pretty amazing. I think Tyler says they go down to 26hz but I measured mine in my room going down to 15hz before they rolled off. The detail and transient response are pretty amazing.
He has used pairs of D2X and D1x under $5k on his website. I’m also really interested in his new Halo series which has sealed cabinets.

D1x with seas millennium tweeter here and I'm pretty happy with them. Only down-side is that they are huge (takes up a lot of space) and heavy AF. Oh, and they are passive so you'll need an amp.

I reckon you'd need to double the budget to get what you want. Check ATC SCM 50 ASL Pros (or 100, or 150 etc.)

I'm guessing the mid line Focals and used first gen Barefoots are what I'm kinda aiming at. I'd prefer something active, and with digital inputs to make life easier, and have fewer conversion steps.

If you are patient the Dynaudio Air series 3 ways can be found at pretty reasonable prices.

Budget?
I have a pair of KH310A monitors that I love, but my space, needs, and use-case are probably way different than your own.

I picked up a pair of Dynaudio LYD48 monitors last year. My mixes got better in a hurry, and that was coming from Dynaudio Air 6 monitors. The clarity of the mids is very revealing. I think they are the best buy under $2.5k.

The KH310 is on my radar for sure. Anything I buy I'm going to have to shoot out with my JBL LSR4328P system because I've been making great mixes through those for 10-ish years now and I'm at the point where I either stick with them or move up to 3 ways. It's going to have to be a huge difference for me to spend a lot of money on monitors that I don't feel that I *need*..

On that budget the ATC SCM25A would be my first choice! I’ve heard good things about PSI as well. Zenpro carries them.

The Dutch & Dutch 8C is the finest monitor I have used but out of your target range. At 5K I have never heard anything touch the Atomic Instrument 610s.... I know Dave Cobb, Vance Powell and a whole bunch of folks in Nashville have switched to these...

Yes, better to save more pennies and get a full SL spec ATC. I'm hoping to move up to 50s with subs at some stage, probably never be able to afford it though!

Tha last time, was sitting in front of some active atc, I was thinking well I have 2 kidneys! . Agree the dyn 3 way should be on the list, I found my smaller room didn’t support them properlay and completely agree about their mids!

I feel ATCs are a longstanding great loudspeaker but I feel design has marched on at this point with Designs from Kii, Dutch & Dutch and Atomic.

I dunno what it might be yet. I figure around 5K. I recently took a set of LSR4326 (and 4312 sub) out of the room after many years of good service. They are fine speakers. I felt that anything I did on those speakers would translate well. Having said that, I felt they were perhaps a little flattering and a little low on level. I'm a classical guy, so serious level isn't something I need. Still, in my 19 x 12 room I occasionally needed just a bit more. But it wasn't there to give without noticeable distortion (by the time you got to 90 dBa or so). But they really gave me my money's worth. And that little remote is nifty. I also thought I wanted KH310, having heard them in a mobile control room. But to my ear, the imaging collapsed when I was 15 or 20 degrees above or below the vertical axis. I'm not keen about being stuck in a sweet spot when my old bones are telling me to get up and move around. But I'm now getting very familiar with the Genelec 'Ones'. I don't know the 8351, but I know the 8341 and 8331 (aided and abetted by the 7370 sub). The 8341s will go down quite a way and you'll have a solid system without a sub. I just needed to hear all of the ugly LF that came into my live recordings so that I could get rid of it. There's nothing like Genelec imaging--I was blown away the first time I ever used them nearly 30 years ago. And--at least for me--there's another 30dB of available level I'll probably never need. People seem to love or hate Genelecs--usually for the same reason. They are clinical and detailed. There's nothing flattering about them. That's fine with me, either when listening analytically or for pleasure. If the recording is good, you'll be in the room. If it's less good, you might wish you were in different room. If you're tempted, make sure to get the GLM system along with the speakers--it's a really excellent room EQ that will let you save presets. So I suppose if you needed Horrortones, you could get them. Have fun choosing new ones. Even if we're looking for different things, there are a lot of really fine speakers around these days.
