Got the Neumanns today.. First impression was that they weren't terribly different from my JBL monitors.. But I sat down with a mix I did before and started again, and damn if I can't hear all kinds of things that weren't noticable before. Tiny details, frequencies that I never noticed, etc. But the tonality is similar thankfully. Sorry if I missed this but what JBL’s are you on?

I intend to do a full review soon, but doing more critical listening last night gave me a new perspective on these monitors. I pulled up a hardcore mix I have been playing with for some time and tried to match some hyper-produced tracks I occasionally use as reference.
I find myself pushing a lot more EQ with these monitors. My resulting mix was a lot more stylized and produced sounding than I've felt comfortable with in the past. Probably still not quite as perfect as this pro mix, but certainly a lot closer than I think I've been able to get before.
I absolutely heard more issues in the midrange that would make me track things like guitar a lot more different than I had been in the past, which I think really lends credence to my belief that monitors matter more than almost anything else in the system besides mics, instruments and mic positioning.
The JBLs seem to kind of gloss over some stuff in the region between the drivers more than simply needing a midrange. I just don't hear some of the details at all even though the overall tonality is very similar between the JBLs and the KH-310D's.
But one thing is blowing my mind right now beyond all of these things.. The soundstage is absolutely pinpoint accurate with the Neumann's. The JBL's seemed to mush together things in the mix that were more centric whereas the Neumann's make things easily audible. You want to move snare 10% to the right? Yes, you can hear that small difference on the Neumanns but the JBLs sort of make the center blob of snare extend a little more right but not really move the bulk of it.
One thing though, the JBLs have a slightly wider sweet spot. I can move around feet of space without hearing much change in tonality. The Neumann's are lightyears better than the Footprints I auditioned in terms of sweet spot, but the Neumanns are just a slightly less than the JBLs with just 18" or so of sweet spot when sitting around 3-5ft away from them. I suspect it's because the waveguides aren't nearly as deep as the JBLs.
Certainly not a deal breaker at this point.
These are certainly growing on me quickly. The price was up there with the most expensive items I've bought for the studio so I was hoping to be blown away.. Which didn't really happen when I was able to put one JBL and one Neumann side-by-side and get a relatively balanced image, and made me quite afraid that I wasn't going to get a huge increase in quality for 4K$..
But the detail and imaging that I have found by redoing mixes with these speakers says more about how I was able to hear them through the old JBLs than what listening to old mixes through new speakers says.
I'll give it a few more days and then start listening to the new mixes in other locations to see how translation works on these.

Do you have the woofers on the inside or the outside? A friend loaned me some 310's for a few days, but I had a deadline to make, so I didn't get to experiment with them as much as I would have liked. I would like to check them out again. The sweet spot was definitely different from my amphion two15s. I loved the lowend extension and how tight the lowend was with the sealed cabinet.

Almost grabbed a pair a couple times over the years. On the One15's now.

The woofers go on the inside, tweeter and midrange go on the outside is how they're supposed to be positioned. I'm also still using these with my old JBL subwoofer, although it's turned down about 6dB from where it was with the JBLs.

How do you like the KH 310's with guitars and rock music? Ik keep reading people don't like them for rockguitars.
How close can you sit to monitors?

I also read that folks didn't like them with rock, but I also met a guy who had used them for rock and metal since they first came out and he said he never heard an issue. I listened to his work and it sounded fine to me so I took the plunge and got them. I don't really hear any issues at all. Like any monitor, you'll need to "learn" them a little but I haven't run into any issues with translation, and no dead spots or strangeness with my mixes that could be caused by the monitors not translating. So no, I don't think there's any problems with rock music at all. I did talk about the listening position in my review of them, but the skinny is that I personally can't sit closer than about 3ft from them or else I hear strange spots in the image, but that also could be because I have them sitting just above a mixer and the mixer could be causing issues with reflections.

Fluff, also known as Ryan Bruce, youtube guy, is a big heavy guitar rock dude if you know what I mean, he loves his Neumanns. He said he prefers the big ones over the 2 ways.
