Wanna say first, I dig JK's stuff. It's why I started hanging here, acutally. John's writing and soul speaks to me. He should grab that brass ring one day and hit it with a tune that just rips everyone's heart out of their chests.
Over the three versions of the mix, I liked all of them, but the first was likely the closest to what would sell it, IMO. The others were punchier, but my ear didn't need punchier. It wants to zero in on that heartbreak human thing of the song.
OT about SonarWorks, but what my ear wants in the mix was some movement on the sequenced element, some filter over time, like a lover's leg moving under the covers. Maybe a pre-delayed 'verb on the dark drum backbeat hits, bandpassed to give a mildly brighter effect, just to give the track some eigth-note vibe, which I think is missing here.

It's such a groovin' tune, John. Love the syncopated whatever-it-is on those tapped-out chords hanging everywhere.
Here's my observation. If my ears are at rest and I haven't listened for a bit, I like whichever one I listen to first the most and then the others sound a little weird by comparison.
Try it. Don't listen to it for an hour and pick a different version to start with then listen to the others.

BTW: What's the drum kit? Superior Drummer 3? If so, was it a stock Massenburg kit,or something else? Sounds great. That's RGO's own drumrec, groovin' his ass off as usual.

I just finished a calibration of my Dynaudio LYD48 speakers. The difference is not subtle. The calibrated version sounds so much better. It shows my room having an 11dB dip at 80hz. No wonder the mastering engineer asked me to drop 80hz on the bass guitar. There's a few other odd things too. But above 700hz, the room and speakers are nearly flat. I'm a bit shocked by how messed up the low end is. I will see if I can post a picture. My room is well treated but this software is making a huge difference in what I hear. I don't know how that will relate to mixes yet but it is very interesting.

Great polished sound overall. I know this is a personal taste thing, but I was missing bass in the mix. It seems so subtle, but when it increased in certain sections there was so much more energy. Although, I play bass and tend to be more active than this style is showcasing.
I have a hard time saying whether the SW mixes were better. They just sound different to me. The original might have been slightly more smeared, but not so much in a bad way. I guess what I'm saying is what you've been working with certainly worked great, and with SW seems like a great result too!

Just got back and listened to all 3... the original is inferior to your first attempt, the last attempt is really great! Keep using it bud, that last one is a MONEY mix.. Cheers Wiz

Yeah I like the latest one too. And I’m pretty close to just pulling the trigger on the ref mic and trying the demo.

It’s the fact that my mixes with sw punch like a pissed mule in every other listening environment that has me all excited. I e never been able to get that before and I attributed it to gear. I just couldn’t freaking hear a large swath of the low end so it was muddy as hell.

I think I cut off the end of this one...but I’m burning down and marking completed...two years later lol. It will be the best mix of this particular song 14 people have ever heard...

Where are you located ragan? Seattle PM me if you'd like to borrow the calibration mic. I will still be using it for a bit, but when I'm done messing with the room, I could loan it to you.

The last one is great John. Raises the hair on my arms. Wonder if it could be pitched to the right artists.

I think I could even tolerate a rap over that bed. [apologize for the OT]

Had a plugger friend that had an in with Keith Urban...has his number and Keith has told him to shoot him a song when he felt really good about it. My friend freaked out over this song and sent it to him...got “cool song, but pass” back. He’s about the only country guy that could pull this off.

Not surprising considering he only makes shitty music. I think Blake Shelton could pull it off. It’s got that crossover sound and similar vibe as “Sangria” where the only thing that really makes it country is the accent. I hear it more as RnB but that’s just a matter of taste. I think its chart topping quality either way. It really is that good.

I think The Bee Gees chorus probably precludes it from country. Honestly, it’s more Timberlake or Mayer probably...but I’m not holding my breath for that lol.

Sounds very 80’s to me - maybe a touch of late 70’s yacht rock/ disco.
I’m really thinking about trying this out once I upgrade my system in a few months (won’t even install on 10.8.5).
