So, I had planned to demo Sonarworks because they have a good sale going on right now. BUT, I just found out that I can't use my miniDSP USB calibration mic with Sonarworks. Damnit. Now I can't demo because I don't have another measurement mic.
Is Sonarworks that good? Good enough to warrant going through the hassle of buying a measurement mic?

I'm in the same boat. Considering buying it, but I don't have a measurement mic to test it out.

In my pro designed and treated room, it provided the final 10% of monitoring accuracy for me. I bought the full package including the calibrated mic.

grab a mic that has a relatively flat frequency response. Not ideal but it does work and gives you an idea of what the software is capable of. I did my measurement with the line audio cm3 and it worked like a charm.

There's the cheap Behringer measurement microphone which I've heard is pretty decent.

There's the cheap Behringer measurement microphone which I've heard is pretty decent. That's the one Sonarworks is selling. It is just rebranded. To me, Sonarworks is brilliant. I did not notice an improvement by using their own mic, even if you can load its frequency response in the soft, instead of the Behringer ECM8000.

Surely you could do some in computer routing trickery with SoundFlower to make it work. That said. Could pick up an earthworks m30 or something relatively cheap. Or I'd go for a DPA4006 if you wanted a super versitile mic at the same time.

I purchased their mic and demo version of software for $50 on sale. Each mic is calibrated with info data to help the program measure correctly. It is not a high quality mic, but since they've calibrated it (with off axis response) it does allow the software to better calibrate your room. That said, I never bought the software. It did help somewhat, but didn't want to deal with the inconvenience. Their software that was to work "system wide" never worked well on my Windows 7 system, but the plug in used with Nuendo worked ok. You just have to remember to turn it off when printing any audio (exporting mixes or running final mix through the buss).

I had the old IK Multimedia ARC 2 mic and used that to demo the Sonarworks software. After I bought the Sonarworks package with the mic and the calibrated HD650 headphones I redid the measurements with the mic that came with the Sonarworks package and even though I did not have the calibration code to enter from the ARC 2 mic, the measurements were not that far off from each other. Even though my room is treated pretty well I still have a bump from about 150 to 250 Hz that made it harder to mix the low end. Using Sonarworks has made a huge difference in being able to accurately mix the low end so that mixes translate better for me.

BTW where is the best place to buy the sonarworks + mic package if you are living outside of US?

You just have to remember to turn it off when printing any audio (exporting mixes or running final mix through the buss). If I may, let me share my workaround for this : I plug in my soundcard SPDIF out to SPDIF in. Then I use Patchwork standalone, a VST chainer, in which I selct SPDIF in as input, and my analog outs for monitoring as outputs. I use SPDIF out as my DAW main out, and even my Windows default output. That way I always have Sonarworks processing my audio, without using it in my DAW. No fear to forget to bypass it when printing, and it is applied to every audio coming out of the computer.

The most effective room tuning I ever heard was done with a KM-84. Don Davis was recommending the AKG D224 during the late '80s. The problem with omnis is that the pattern isn't as uniform as an 84 or D224.

A 4006a would be much better for that or other reference mics out there now.

Are you guys using it at 100% wet so it's completely flat?

Yep 100% wet but only using it with headphones.
Other people have suggested a "range function", so that it only corrects below say, 180Hz. It doesn't exist, but I'd love to try that out

I'm still wavering on this. I'd love for it to help with my low end, especially after hearing what the Trinnov did for me. I just can't demo the damn thing without a measurement mic. BUT, it's on sale for a great price right now. Urgh.
I hear mixed reviews on it. Some say it's great, others not so much. I do have Dirac, but always found it a pain in the ass to use, so I stopped using it.

Im on the fence about this..
I've listened to the online demo with Sony 7506s and AKG702s. Im not sure I like what it does. Its supposed to make them flat which really makes the bass really freaking loud.
I can see it being helpful potentially with monitors in a room but on headphones I don't think this great. It would be better to just learn how your headphones sound and translate I think.
Plus Id have to get osx10.9 to run it haha
Think I'll pass on it for now. Would be cool to try and run the demo at the studio later though. see if it is better than the Genelec GLM software.
