thinking about making the switch to the UAD ecosystem for mixing at home. i know a bunch of you have been using their plugs for years, what are the ones you still use every day? if you had to go back and pick only ten what would you go with?

I can tell you which ones I miss the most since ditching UAD, maybe that says something.

I usually reach for the tape sims. They are a big reason I stick with UAD.
SSL channels (legacy and MK II) and compressor
Neve 1073
1176 compressors and sometimes LA2A
BX20 reverb is a new go-to
I love all the elysia stuff but I sometimes use native Plugin Alliance versions. Mpressor, Alpha compressor, MusEQ
API EQ collection - fantastic general shaper
Ampeg bass amps (in the mix, not Unison since I have no apollo)
bx Digital V3 that one also is available native
kind of wish I had the Oxford Inflator

I use the 1176, LA-2A, and Pultec collection almost always. API 550/560 regularly. RE-201, EMT-140, and Dimension D often. Ocean Way Room and EMT 250 occasionally. Valley People Dynamite when I need an easy to use expander or gate.

1) New 1073 with EQ engaged and driven about +5 or +10 when mixing through it 2) Transient Designer 3) EP-34 Tape Echo 4) Manley Vari Mu 5) Dimension D
I have high regard for the BX20 and the Ocean Way, but have been using Nebula reverbs these days. If I am tracking DI electric guitar, I find I use the 1176 (Blackface) and That simple little tape plug for color.

Ragan & John,
May I ask, how are you (were you) using the 250? I have this one and never really gel’ed with it. Could you suggest any particular uses, settings or presets? Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention Chandler Curve Bender.
I don't own that one yet but I love that thing.

API 500 series collection SSL strip MKII (crazy good emulation) SSL GBUS MKII (same) LA2A MKII (the gray one) Curve Bender 88RS strip MKII (I tend to use SSL more but I'd say this is equal quality and better for acoustic material) New 1073 (the mids sound much sweeter and less pointy than any other 1073 emulation I've heard (the old emulation is shit in comparison), dimension/phase pretty close to my BAEs) Pultec MKII 1176 MKII API 2500 Distressor
I like their effects but I tend to gravitate more to the Relab and Exponential reverbs and Soundtoys and Eventide delays. Prob would choose BX20 to keep one.

It seems that all of the mkii versions of their plugins are better, is everything listed in the store mkii?

It seems that all of the mkii versions of their plugins are better, is everything listed in the store mkii? Yes, generally when a MK II comes out... they lump the MK I "legacy" plugins with it as a bundle if you need to save SHARC power, or run old projects, etc I use MK I plugs on my individual drum channels since there are so many and I only have a Quad DSP.

On every session: Shadow Hills Mastering Comp WT800 B15 VoG LA2A Gray Summit TLA-100 EMT-140 and 250 Ocean Way Studio (on acoustic instruments and recorded percussion) Fairchild 660 and 670 API Channel strip
Occasionally: Curvebender 1176 collection BX-20 EP-3 VSC-2 Type 69
Own but don't use much SSL 4000E ATR-102 and Studer A800 SVT collection Lex 224 Massive Passive SPL Transient Designer Oxford Envolution Oxford Limiter 33609 Fatso IBP Pultec Collection (I'm using the recently updated Softube release)
I went through a serious acquisition phase early in my UAD ownership, and as you can see, I have quite a few plugins that just sit on the sidelines. Part of it is due to my evolving approach of "less is more" these days. Also, I think I am less likely seduced by a pretty face. Slightly.
If I were to change my purchasing approach, I'd demo everything for the full two week period whenever possible. I used to just tell myself "I need that!" and jump. No more.
EDIT: I'd use UAD comps more if the compression amount showed on the Pro Tools channel strip. Yeah I know I should listen and not look, but it's a nice visual cue to have. I'm not sure it's possible with UAD since it's been talked about for a long time.

I love the 1081 and LA3A, even though they could both probably use a MK2 treatment. Especially if the jump is like the others that have a MK2.

I bet a mkii would bring the tone. The new Helios is amazing. I would LOVE a mkii Harrison channel strip. You have to believe they are working on one. The 88rs is good but doesn't knock me out. Though it's fine for more transparent stuff. The api vision is ok I suppose. I like the 550 and 560 better though so the strip isn't worth as much to me just for the dynamics and saturation.

Drew @ UA will there ever be an LA3A mkii plugin release? jdc, Sorry, but as a company rule we don't ever discuss future products. I can tell you that we are slowly replacing the GUIs of many plugins, making them "retina" compatible, and the LA3 and DBX are on that list.

I use it for snare reverb all the time. Percussion - shakers and Tambo. I like how you can easily control the top and bottom and it gets really great results quickly.
