Forgot to mention, I use the Chandler Zener for parallel crush drums on just about every mix. I got the UAD Zener and liked it so much I got the HW. I track through it (overheads, rooms, bass, vocals) and I use it on most mixes as a Kick/Snare crush in parallel in my hybrid summing. Not wanting to sidetrack the thread but this happened: I was doing a mix revision yesterday and had the HW Zener on parallel duties and noticed a lot of dust on the VU meter glass so I ran my finger over it and accidentally pushed the meter glass in :-0. It turns out that it had happened before because, when trying to figure out how to repair, I noticed some of the VU screws on that side were not factory tight ( its a second hand unit) Anyway, I didn’t want to break the needle or anything so I decided to not usethe HW and I set up a parallel bus ITB with the same settings and levels and was able to complete the mix revision. It was 98% there and in a parallel situation I suppose its going to be less noticeable. So anyway, UAD saved the day! Just to comment also that I emailed Chandler Limited support asking for a guide on how to fix the glass and I got a detailed step by dtep back in 30 minutes! Kudos to Chandler Support :-)

I guess I should demo the plug, but I can guarantee it won’t satisfy.

Sorry, but as a company rule we don't ever discuss future products. So it IS a future product! Great! Hahaha I hope it happens, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Kudos to Chandler Support :-) Not to sidetrack the thread, but I'd love to hear more about what you think of HW vs SW of the Zener? The Zener or TG1 is something I've been jonesing for. I've got the UAD Zener, and from what I've been hearing from people who have compared with HW, it's really, really close. And given how expensive the HW is, the SW might be something to live with. Though, a couple of alternatives have caught my eye. A) building the DIY-Racked version or B) picking up the new Audioscape piece when it's released. Anyone with any experience?

The Zener is one I've been lusting after too...but for just mixing here...unless I get a bunch of major label mixes, I'm gonna stick with the SW. I'd probably be more inclined to go with a HW RS124...

It’s mono and like $1600 more than an Audioscspe stereo version ? Personally, I am very impressed with my Audioscape ssl, be curious to hear its take on the Zener.

Though, a couple of alternatives have caught my eye. A) building the DIY-Racked version or B) picking up the new Audioscape piece when it's released. Anyone with any experience? Well, now that you ask .... :-) So the Zener has some real power, it can seem like too much at first but once I got used to it I found its great for adding both weight and zing in a crunchy way. When I got it I ran some tones through the HW and the UAD and captured the results in frequency analysis and waveforms. There were two main differences; firstly there was more going on harmonics wise in the HW and secondly the peak of transients was sharper in the HW. Now the differences were small and my tests were not scientific but I have to say that the vibe is just stronger in the HW ... probably because of the headroom and just the variances over time as you pass voltage through it. I would be biased towards hardwarre though. Thats why I have a hybrid studio and I sum through the RND 5060. For me there is something that happens when you sum voltages on copper that I enjoy more :-)

The ATR-102 has been the first thing on my 2 bus since forever.

Atr-102 if I could only use one plug in, it would be the 102!

Yes! The ATR-102 is almost a mastering tool. Drew, I'll have to try it last one time to see if I like it better, but I could almost just use the ATR-102 by itself on the 2 bus and not miss any other plugs.

1. 1176 2 LA2 3 Pultec
In that order

I use the Waves 1176 to tame excessive acoustic guitar strums. I found the CLA Waves 1176 preset actually works better than the UAD, even though the UAD sounds better on most other things. I do use their LA2A when I absolutely must use a compressor, that's an excellent plug-in.

I use it like that sometimes if I'm in a hurry to get something printed quickly. Can "finish" a track with a few knob tweaks. At least enough for a demonstration.

I use either 30 IPS Master or Smooth Vocal depending on the track.

I use the classic Fairchild and Pultecs a lot. I want to buy the newer versions, but honestly I like the sound I get from these.
Ocean Way is useful for reamping tracks others send me. Guitars, drums, singers...instantly find something to improve the quality. At first I just used it for reverb, but now much more the other way.
1176 Collection is a must
VoxBox
1073
Ampeg SVT amps are killer IMO.
Oxford Dynamic EQ - Still learning, but I think it is cleaning up competing frequencies in a good way.
I have a bunch more, but of the ones I own I find these very useful. I put the Oxide Tape plug on a bunch of stuff, but I could probably live without it. And I actually like a bunch of the included set of plugs. Delay Mod, RealVerb...all pretty useful for getting a feel on things. You certainly could get a great sound with just the included set.

If we want him to continue to make that thing we might want to avoid the Zener comparison. I don’t think EMI/Universal takes kindly to it and tends to shut those things down. So I hope he continues to make this thing that I completely understand is nothing like the zener and in no way resembles it in any manner.

What tends to be less CPU intensive?... Waves or UAD?
Grasshopper with low track counts/low end PC asks. Thanks, Chris

How many SSL 4000 E channel strips (the new one) can you fit on a octo card at 96K? I tried it again recently and wow, what a great sounding plugin.
