Ah. I've never heard of that before. Commonly referred to a "Dead Air".

"Dead Air" - Cool! I never thought of it as radio buzzklll.
Regardless, for every ridiculous, insipid, stupid, crazy, over-the-top, infuriating example of modern music, I can find an analog from the 50's and the 60's. Though honestly, I don't really see Cage's piece as music so much as performance art and/or an introspective challenge of the meaning and point of music. As a music teacher I can tell you that it's great fodder for a music appreciation course. The line became blurred a long time ago, and the above clip lies close to that line. Hey, if it makes the listener actually think about what it is they're listening to...

Hey, if it makes the listener actually think about what it is they're listening to... Not even remotely close. Even the utter trash from back then was more interesting,. had more humor, more humanity, MUCH more entertainment value than the dross that's crammed down people's throats today.
If you really believe what you've been saying, either you are totally ignorant of the music of the '50s and '60s or you have no taste, no humaity, and no sense of humor whatsoever.

Geez John, that's a little harsh for realgear, no? Probably, but that's what I thought of what he said. What's sauce for the goose....
But still, how can you say that even a dumb as nails song like "Chewy, Chewy" or "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" (just to name two of the all time dumbest songs I can think of at random from the '50s and '60s) is anywhere nearly as odious as Ceelo Green's "F*ck You"? or any of dozens of other "modern" songs that are no better? What has happened to our cultural standards? What has happened to good taste? What has happened to our sense of humor?
I don't think the comparison is even close.
And please don't get me started on the unrepentant glorification of violence, the degredation of women, the self-racism, etc, etc, etc, ad (literally) nauseum.
Seriously...
Footnote: As a songwriter, I think of these things a lot. I sincerely feel that the quality of songs in the popular marketplace has become degraded to a truly shocking degree and that what passes for commercial gatekeepers therse days are actually selecting for coaser lower quality, downright unintelligent writing these days and I find it insulting that anyone would claim that the quality of popular songwriting has always been as abysmal as it is now. It's not that there are no good songwriters these days - the writers on this very site demonstrate that it's not so. It's that those entrusted with the public taste are intentionally selecting for music that makes people coarse and stupid.

Way to keep the conversation stimulating, john. As usual you read me like a book. Well, it can't be the first, second, or last.. So it must be the third. Whatever humaity is, I guess I don't have any.

Johnep is taking a little break. Daaaaaaang. It's not just for this. Seems like every argument on here has a common denominator.
