Ok, I'll give up one of my tricks. Grab a SDC or sensitive dynamic, preferably hypercardiod. Instead of putting the mic under the snare, find the air hole in the shell and place the mic at a 45deg angle pointing at the hole. Move it back about 1 inch away from the hole and out of line of the air puff. This will give you the best "snares" sound without needing a whole lot of EQ. Hi Svart! Thought to try your trick to tomorrow recording. A question? 45deg angle pointing at the air hole in the shell. Do you mean 45deg from below or from above seen? Should work well with a Sennheiser 441 I believe. Thanks H-Hansson

Put on some headphones and move the mic around while you hit the snare and you'll hear what I mean..

Tested your mic up idea svart on cowboycoalminer song projects here at RGO. Now I do not know if is exactly as you explained (send a photo) but I tweaked and listened until it sounded good. I tested both with the Sennheiser MD441 and vintage Sennheiser MD421. But thought it sounded best with a SM57. The sad part is that I will soon have to buy a lunchbox with preamps just for the snare drum, haha! Will probably hook up u jsteiger and expand with lunchbox with VP28 in the future, wonderful preamps! Thanks 4 tips bro https%3A//soundcloud.com/drumrec-com/75-bpm-6-8

Wonderfully trashy, dirty drums gouge Love that low tuned snare. Do you get a lot of use in the mix with that under mic on toms. Tested it once with've never felt that I needed it. Must be a dream to send the whole drum kit to a tape recorder and smooth out the cymbals! Sitting right now and make drum job for a customer who wants dirty, singing rock drums ala J.Bonham. So I've dusted of my 24 "x18 bass drum and out with all the cushioning so it ring beautiful overtones in the studio 4 the moment:) Speaking of "taming the hat" thread. For this recording I have a couple of old vintage 16 "K Zildjian hi-hat ... sooooooo smooth sound;) Will post some clips and photos later so u can here Cool recording room you have! /H

thanks drumrec,
the recording room doubles as the rumpus room. or is it the rumpus room doubles as the recording room..... :-) you can just see the bar off to the left of the last photo. the control room and iso room are off to the left as well. the drums just sound better in the bigger rumpus room to us so we run cables and move the gobos out there to track.
I really like double micing stuff. it seems to make the drums sound fuller to my ear. the trashy sound is the ribbon mic in the hallway through a lola pre. there was an echo in there that just sounded right. I've tried a few mics there now and the ribbon mic seems to sound the best.
since that hat thread I've also started looking into bigger drier hats.

Thanks guys... All cut live to 8 tracks via Radar, using my location / remote rig... A few overdubs, & bounces. but for the most part as it was in the room. Warts and all. But we captured the vibe, and that was what I was hoping for! Sure did capture it. Nice work, Man.

I should mention that I did two fine CD recordings with Blue Oyster Cult around the millennium with the Nobtwiddler, Paul Orofino, in his studio. He's a total pro, and has a fanatic's dedication and a connoisseur's appreciation for REAL GEAR. Online, or off. And he's a fine fellow. Miss you, bro.

John, " I'm gonna get a six pack of them when my ship comes in..." That's cool, but if you're gonna hang with a few friends and record, you need a case at least, don't ya think? haha

Monday morning here in Stockholm and it's time to terrorize my friends here at RGO with a little drum rattle so you can kick-start to a wonderful week in the studio. Last week I had a client who wanted the drum sound like John Bonham style, but a bit more modern. When I usually test new drum sound I take a loop so it will be more fun to tweak the drum sound to. So I took a guitar loop that however gets quite repetitive and monotonous (because I can not poste client's song) so bear with it However, almost the same mic set up as before. I moved Korby KAT U67 mic to be a mono overhead, thats it! Then I dust off the big BD (not near nobtwiddler gorgeous 30" BD though). The biggest thing I have is a 24X18" and I took out all the cushioning. Then it was just to tune the drums for a sound that fits! Thought of you gouge there with this dark hihat on "taming the hat" thread. Sending a picture of 16" K Ziljian 70's hihat that I had for this job, lovely! Ride/crach was a dark Istanbul Agop ride 20". No reverb, there where enough room in the ambience mic and the drum bus would be happy to go through ADR compressor or some other comp. Was a bit lazy here and the mix was not the most important thing at this stage and it's a bump at 200-240Hz. That said, it's just a rough mix to find the drum sound... Can upload a wav file on the drums through my dropbox that you can download for those who want to download the drums. Feel free to do whatever you want, cut and paste, mix or just jamming or to wake the neighbors with! 89 bpm Cheers /H https%3A//soundcloud.com/drumrec-com/soundcheck-jam-bonham-vibehttps%3A//soundcloud.com/drumrec-com/soundcheck-jam-drums-89bpm

Very nice Haken! Through my earbuds, the sound/tonality of your kit seems close to JHB's live sound. This is a good thing, IMHO. I have heard many Zeppelin boots, and the most lamentable aspect of them is always the fidelity of the recording. But the brilliance of JHB's talent always punches through, no matter how poor the quality of the tape. And the sound the band always seemed to reach for was "raw" and in-your-face dry. Maybe not truly dry, but that is how the drums sounded to me, out in the audience. And the drum mix was loud, very loud. I am struggling to describe JHB's sound without resorting to cliches. I suppose in the end it came down to the man and his talent. But he had a sound - one that can be replicated to a certain degree, and I think you have accomplished it.
When I saw them live in '77, the thing that blew me away the most was the drum sound coming through the PA, and of course the drumming. Perhaps some of the enduring reverence for JHB comes from how people lucky enough to see Zep live remember the experience: for me, for the first 15 minutes of the show, I heard nothing but the radical style and brutal finesse of JHB as he flawlessly executed LZ's material with a controlled fury that no one has been able to match, ever. His fills were crazy over-the-top complex, yet his timing was perfect. I could not hear Plant's vocal, and I could barely pick out Page's guitar. The mix was actually pretty unbalanced and "bad". But I didn't mind one bit.

I posted this somewhere before, here is my home made drum set, I built the shells, machined the lugs, made the stands.
the recording is in an untreated room, one take on everything, one rode k2 mic out front of kit 5', about 3' off the carpeted floor, used a bomb factory 1176 plug all buttons. This was a one man dick around jam, slightly embarrassing cause it sucks, but I posted the snippet to show how the tuning on the drums and delivery far outweigh any gear when it comes to a JB sound IMO

drumrec, dude that sounds great. So much better than the sound Bonham had IMHO. I never really was a fan of those drum sounds that everybody seemed to drool over.
