I've tried so many times to mic overheads with ribbons. It always just seems so dark, even though the tone is very even. It can work well with open mixes but in dense mixes the attack of the drums get so lost.

The Royer SF-12 Stereo Ribbon mic has been used as overheads on every metal record I've done since it's release... Including the 6 or 7 Immolation records. Cymbals sound smooth, and adds a bit of weight to the toms, snares, etc. Even with a slight boost at 8 or 10 K.
Amazing mic.

Hakan, Yep it's a 30 inch... 1929 Radio King Marching drum, that I had cleaned up, and added legs so that it could be used as a kick. Found in a local antiques store about ten years ago. Been using it ever since! I love it.

Been using it ever since! I love it. I was recently looking at a big old marching BD. Decided it would be to much of a space hog right now for my little spot. Once I have a bit more space, it'll be back at the top of the list. Love to hear a track.

I wanted to post the track that we did that day, but apparently even as a MP3 the file is too big?
Artist is Frank Carillo and the Bandoleros. I recorded and produced this track for the TV series "True Blood", Although set up in the studio, I used my location rig to cut theses tracks. Wanted that 70's sound of all Helios!

Now, I was inspired to dust off the big drums, haha! Thanks for sharing nobwiddler

It can work well with open mixes but in dense mixes the attack of the drums get so lost. Try as I have done on them recordings that I've posted here. Condenser as overhead and a pair of ribbon mics just behind the drums. This will give you better choices in the mix

Ok, I'll give up one of my tricks.
Grab a SDC or sensitive dynamic, preferably hypercardiod. Instead of putting the mic under the snare, find the air hole in the shell and place the mic at a 45deg angle pointing at the hole. Move it back about 1 inch away from the hole and out of line of the air puff. This will give you the best "snares" sound without needing a whole lot of EQ.

Thanks guys... All cut live to 8 tracks via Radar, using my location / remote rig... A few overdubs, & bounces. but for the most part as it was in the room. Warts and all. But we captured the vibe, and that was what I was hoping for!
