I'm looking for suggestions for a vocal mic that has some thickness to it.
Warm saturated girth. The type of mic people would accuse of verging on being overly colored.
Cheers.

Proximity effect starts about 2 ft out, which can be surprising until you get used to it.

Figure of 8 at the Gefell UMT 70s has a fat proximity effect, but also a fat top end.... Its one of my favorite mics for vocals because you can try different things.

I enjoy U47 style microphones for that.

Anything with a nice proximity effect will get you there. On the cheaper end, the ev re20 is pretty killer for that larger than life effect.

Budget and microphone type preference, please. Also, examples of vocal recordings that sound fat, warm, saturated and verging on overly colored could help narrow suggestions down.

Cathedral Pipes Notre Dame... U47 style mic with M7 capsule all hand made in the USA. So fat and smooth it's my go to vocal mic every time. Very cheap for what you are getting.

I must admit that I have almost no experience with the 7b (The GS Michael Jackson hype turns me off for one thing), but I don't generally like Shure dynamics for vocal very much in general. I'll sing intop a 58 at a club if there's nothing better, but these days I bring my own mic to gigs. You want a moving coil dynamic that sounds lovely and has great proximity effect, the Beyerdynamic M88 is your mic. Much better than any dynamic Shure has or ever will make! A little more expensive, but well worth it - and it's not so funny looking!

And can be used on pretty much everything and everywhere, voice, bass, brass, whatever, and all kind of live duty because it has a near perfect hypercardiodid pattern and great in difficult environment. Great suggestion. I am a known big fan of the 441 for the same duties, also a hypercardiodid, also usable on everything, but i guess the M88 is somehow more colored and last but not least a lot more affordable. And most probably it takes a drop on the floor better and does not look so funny.... :-D

currently using an rca which has a nice bump down low but lacks a little air. along side a gefell pm860 which is less bottom but has a nice top end. or an sm7/sm57.
the shure has a good proximity thing but is too pinched. the gefell and the rca whilst awesome have a mid thing going on. I'm looking for something with less mids some top end and a big bottom. so when the rca and gefell aren't doing it I have a different option to try.
so a mic that sounds like a neve preamp or a tube comp. I'm thinking saturated and thick. this is an alternative to what I already have. so not looking for just proximity effect.
on my list is the red r12 or jolly MJE-K47H caps for my oktava mk012 also thinking about the early groove tubes md series.
the aea is now on the list.

A 47 into a V72 preamp is a classic rich, fat combination but somewhat out of the ballpark price wise.

Under a grand. That changes things a bit,
I'm fairly certain a U47 is out.
See if you can find a used Telefunken CU29 'copperhead'. I bought mine for $950 used, in flawless condition and it definitely has a lot of what you're asking for.

In that price range, I second Ward's suggestion and also the previously mentioned Royer R84. You could also look for a used SE Gemini mic in good condition.

Just saw this on eBay. I literally just bough I/O Audio's U67 mod kit. It's one of the best microphones I've ever used. Here is Max's U47 on eBay for under s grand. www.ebay.com/itm/182444671659

Edit: I guess it doesn't have the Thiersch cap but still. I bet that's a lovely sounding mic.

Hello, you should check out our CM48T which has our AK47 capsule that is similar to the RK7 capsule in the Notre Dame. The CM48T also uses a typical U47/U48 vintage tube microphone with a JAN 7 pin minature tube.
The CM48T is $595 but we offer a 10% discount to RGO members. The CM48T is a more vintage sound than our U47ve which has a more modern tube circuit with a faster transient response. This is my preference as an engineer.
The CM48T does have a more traditional vintage sound. advancedaudio.ca/collections/tube-microphones/products/cm48-t
BTW, the RK7 looks identical to our AK47 ans we suspect it comes from the same capsule maker. I am have a CM48T and a TLM103 set-up in the studio and I hope to record some vocal comparisons over the weekend.
Unfortunately, you do not want to hear me try and sing. However, now that its stopped snowing and it warmed up to a balmy 42F then I can get a vocalist or two to drop by the studio.
Here is one of he first comments I got back on the CM48T.
Dale Corcoran on Dec 15, 2016 I just recieved my CM48t here in the UK today. I luckily had a client in the studio when it arrived, and gave it a go. I have to say this microphone into a 1073 pre is a thing of beauty. I can honestly say that it is so close to the the U47 it was that I can comp vocals all day long from different sessions, on 2 vastly different priced microphones and you wouldnt know which one was which, very happy indeed. Well done
Cheers, Dave aamicrophones.com
