Can we get an audio example of the moose fart for the culture? How does it sound with HW compression vs SW compression? Do you prefer your moose farts with a hall type reverb or more of a room style reverb?

They do sound really horrible when they clip. Not a pretty sound at all.
I've never used a type 69 module, but we have 2 console modules and they are great for certain things. I've never thought to put a vocal through it but I may have to try now that John is praising it so much.

There is a clip on chandler's site about the curve bender where they are talking about using an re20 through the Helios on Lenny kravitz vocals for 'are you gonna go my way'
And john's description of them being finicky, low head room, and horrible clipping sound is very accurate. The clipping isnt even cool in any way. It just sounds bad..

John's praises are legitimate (because it's fucking John and he knows good gear) as the well respected Nobtwiddler would agree; there's something about the helios mic pre eq (together) that is just special. The best settings are few and it can make material sound awful but when it works it works. Personally I have a rack of 4 helios eq's that get put on everything, but I use the mic preamp for acoustic guitar and vocals often. When I was mixing drums and bass at a friends place I had the opportunity to use his two beloved original helios 69s. They grabbed me immediately and I ended up using them to record the vox and reamp the bass. In my experience they are not for everything but can be used on everything. I hope to have a rack of 6 Helios 69's and 6 Neve mic pre eq's someday.

Oh yeah and when pushed they dont sound good. Not even cool scifi. Even my modern remake has a narrow headroom. I also am flying by the seat of my pants so nearly everything I say about design should not be taken too seriously. Not that its all novice bs. But I am no Ian Bell, Emrr, or Svart. Pahstah (Paolo) has that part helios mixer. I'd like to know how Paolo feels about the clones he made? I think he did a few with the helios preamp section. I know he also blended the helios eq with a 312 type preamp which sounds really good (I built two with 312 make ups and loved them) One of the new 69 eq im building will have a ba283. (Shhhh..... don't tell)

When it gets too hot in the summer they take a break and open up all the doors and windows to get some airflow. His control room is in the basement - live room is on the main floor of the church. He has a TON of very cool vintage instruments. All sorts of mechanical keyboards and organs etc. Old funky guitars and basses.

The gear and Helios console are now at Fairfax in So. Cal. Just installed over the last few weeks. Henry & his wife have moved to France. Henry will travel to the studio for sessions. P.S. Dave Amels (anamod) whom refurbished Henry's & Lenny's Helios consoles, used Henry's modules as the basis for his Realios modules. While working for Henry and spending many hours on, under and in that console, and having directly A/B'd the Realios, they are that sound; albeit newer, if that makes sense.

"The gear and Helios console are now at Fairfax in So. Cal."
The Fairfax is in Pomona, Ca. where they hold the L.A. County fair. Not far from my place. For 5 years I did sound at the fair. Any further info?

Fairfax is the former Sound City. Run as a private facility I believe. They also had/have an Altec 9200A that was originally in Bradley's Barn. I have some clients who made a record there several years ago.

Though the Altecs are now gone, and I believe a custom console of some sort is going into their B room; the Helios of course in A.

There never were many Helios consoles, and they differ a lot. I forget the number offhand, something like 12 of them. I think it was #9 that was here in NC in the basement of a furniture store which I saw, all/mostly IC based, at one point destined for a studio near me. It was never installed, they went for an API and an SSL instead.

Oh wow - how long did you work there? I was there for a day of tracking years ago. I know somebody in NJ that just purchased an Altec console... I wonder if it's the one from Fairfax.. He also has a Trident A Range, a Helios, and a Neve 8078. Not sure what he plans to do with them all. I got some tracks to mix about a year ago that were tracked in studio A Fairfax with Matt Chamberlain on drums that were fantastic. Of course you could give him cardboard boxes and it would still be amazing.

I was there after Bram; he was the 3M whisperer, I left in 2011. Here's a weird coincidence... my neighbor's brother was one of his engineers back in Hoboken.

I believe, Henrys console is now installed in A, and Olivier just bought another Helios "line input only console" for the B room. And the Sound Techniques, will be installed quite possibly offsite in another location. Still not decided?
Also, I believe Kevin is long gone.....done with the business! (but I could be wrong?)
