What are you stereo (mid/side/ x/y etc) guys using?
I record mostly James Taylorish fingerpicking and Pete Townshend type fingerpicking/ strumming. Never do bluegrass flatpicking.
I'd love to get two A Designs Ventura's, but too steep a cost. Thinking about the A Designs Pacifica since I have a GML 8200 for EQ.
Edit: I own an API 3124 and a 4 Vintech X731's. So I've got that ground covered and am happy with it. Looking for something different off the shelf. Not a DIY guy.

My go to preamps for anything acoustic and also vocals where I'm looking for a big natural, realistic sound are Seventh Circle Audio J99's which are a Jensen Twin Servo design but using a Lundhal input transformer and a high Nickel Cinemag output transformer. These are DIY and require a custom case.
A pair of Neumann KM84's into a Twin Servo preamp is a killer combination for any acoustic style music... PERIOD!

I have an A Designs Pacifica that works great for stereo acoustic guitar recording. I just recorded some last weekend running the Pacifica through a pair of IGS 576 blue strips and it came it nice. Most of the time I use a pair of Retro Powerstrips which really come out nice.

Aurora audio gtq2 -> $2600 2 channel plus 3 band eq, neve style sound but more open and modern. Just beautiful tones to be coaxed out of this baby! Not to mention it offers the best price point and features per channel than the bae, chandler, Ams Neve, and heritage offerings. It's also hand built in the USA, by Geoff Tanner and Co. Geoff Tanner is the neve guru and was part of the original Neve company until 1985/1986.

would be hard to walk past the JLM Audio 99NVs in that role...
you can DIY them as well, rack version, not 500 version is DIY.
cheers

I just finished building a pair. I'm thinking about trying some Jensen transformers and a 990 op amp in a pair similar to Frank DeMedio's modded 312's. I reckon they would be killer on overheads. 312's modded this way are kinda in the Hardy M1 ballpark minus the servo circuit.

Hardy M1 Deluxe, but the CAPI Heider may be a little more versatile.

Hairball Lolas. Big fan of them for when the API thing is too "fast"

Sweet! I was thinking the Hardy version, or the M1! Thanks for bringing up the Hardy. I've never heard that either. I own an API 3124 and a 4 Vintech X731's. So I've got that ground covered. Apologies for not putting that in my original post.

RTZ 9762 first, Telefunken V-72 second. I was impressed by your RTZ EQ demo. I'll check out their preamp, though I read it's based on a Neve, though not exactly. I have 4 Vintech's. So, I feel like I've got that ground covered, looking for something different.

The microphones being used are a huge consideration here, as is the mix application.
Often times, one can have a great sounding solo'ed acoustic track or a great sounding track for the mix and the two are rarely the same. Grace M101s for little color, quick response and good mix placement.

Oh wow. Much cheaper than I thought. (Although that's $2400 at VK ) I guess there were a lot of them made.

VK aren't displaying prices and I'm going on the average eBay pricing I've seen which are for unserviced modules. By the time it's been recapped, serviced and racked I'm guessing $2.5 to $3k. You can pretty much double that for a V76. And if we're talking about 2-channels then you can double all that again!
