I never got off the ground with software instruments, mostly because of the latency performing them within a DAW. I could see hosting them on another 'puter dedicated with a super low buffer, but I invariably use synths as sweetening once I'm well into a mix, and it's frustrating. Is there some method I should be aware of to solve that problem? I have zero problems here running logic at 256 samples. at 48khz that's 5.33ms delay.

Software instruments...but the more I think about it, the more it just sounds like a pita... Perhaps it would help if you "sat in on the session" of someone using logic? Lots of dudes here use it, and with apps like Skype/hangouts/Teamviewer enabling screensharing, it would be easy to see the workflow, how to do stuff.

NoFilterChuck or anyone else, how do you change the meters to show anything over-18dbfs yellow and anything peaking over -12 red or something like that?

NoFilterChuck or anyone else, how do you change the meters to show anything over-18dbfs yellow and anything peaking over -12 red or something like that? Doesn't the new Limiter GUI do this? - showing 0db on the left (input) equaling something like -18dbfs on the right (output) - with the meter on the left going yellow when over 0db. I'm at work right now and don't have it in front of me, but that's what I seem to remember.

My E Licenser casing has fallen completely off so I downloaded the demo of Reaper and wow. I'd be lost. I can't even imagine trying a project in a different DAW. I'd feel lost. Are you saying you can't imagine trying a project in a DAW other than Reaper, which it sounds like you've never used before but you instantly found to be completely intuitive? That's the way I'm reading your post. Sorry no, I was just as lost in reaper. I've been a Cubase user for 10 years now and I'm really used to it's layout

NoFilterChuck or anyone else, how do you change the meters to show anything over-18dbfs yellow and anything peaking over -12 red or something like that? you gotta "Show Package Contents" on the Logic X.app and edit the actual graphical file that comprises the meter image. Same process that folks use to reskin logic to their own color schemes. logicxinterfaces.wordpress.com/

Kudos to John for the Wayne Cochran avatar. If you squint, you can almost see JK. Next Halloween, no brainer! Side note, Elektra Records signed Wayne Cochran about the time when my band, The Soft White Underbelly, was signed to Elektra. We both went nowhere, but you have to admire Elektra's good taste.
As for DAW latency, thanks guys for the replies.
Is there any DAW that allows a smaller sample buffer on record enabled tracks than the nominal session audio engine buffer? That'd be awesome, but I never heard of it.

I ordered the api skin above. Apparently he takes a day or so to get back to you but you basically just copy your existing logic resource folder and move the copy somewhere else on your hard drive for safe keeping and you load the new skin file into the original resource folder that stays in the logic folder and when you open logic it will be re-skinned: 12 euro, 20 cdn: fun !

How cool would it be if using the skin was the equivalent to putting a VCC type plug on all channels, sends and auxes? Skins for all classic consoles..

New Logic Skins, He is quick about sending you your download link. The instructions on his website are : "Logic X Theme Installation: Logic X has a 'Resources' Folder where the new theme elements are to be copied to. In order to find the Resources folder - you need to go to the Logic X application and right-click 'show package contents'. Now navigate to the folder: Contents/Frameworks/MAResources.framework/Versions/A/*Resources* First of all - please copy a version of your original 'Resources' folder to a safe location on your drive - because you are going to modify the original folder when you make changes. With a copy safely backed up on your drive - you can now drag or copy the contents of the new theme into your Logic X 'Resources' folder. Please 'replace' and 'apply to all' the components when alerted. Now open Logic X and you will see the new theme - enjoy! *Note - you can revert to the old theme by copying your original Resources folder back in if necessary." I have dragged my new APi skin folder (which is full of .tif and .tiff files etc) into teh *resources" folder adn rebooted my laptop but I don't get any alerts or prompts to "replace" and " apply to all" ? So the new api skin script is in the right spot but isn't recognized ? Any ideas how to trouble shoot ?

That would be killer, donr... So, I got as far as sitting down to record in Logic and my Tranzport wouldn't work...shut it down and opened up Cubase...

That said....you can probably put the Transport in some emulation mode and get it to work, at least the major functions....it can emulate an MCU or HUI--I forget the various emulation modes for apps that don't directly support it.

I have to say, as someone who can count on one hand the benefits of switching to a software based system.....that is on there. I have the MCU at the desk, and can honestly leave it off and only curse on occasion, but tracking with the Tranzport is a thing of beauty. I have mine mounted on a mic stand that also has a headphone holder with a set of cans with a hella long cable wrapped up. So, I can adjust it and sit all the way across the studio on the couch playing acoustic....or up for cutting vocals or Egtr.....or move it over to the piano or Hammond....having tried the "iphone as remote"--one HUGE flaw--it sleeps before the song is over. Now, I know you can adjust that....and then adjust it back after you're done, but....it always feels fumbly by comparison.
I don't have a negative thing to say about Tranzport. I feel like it's a mistake to have discontinued it. But, I guess they didn't really--they just went under. RIP.

I keep reading various anecdotes that suggest that Logic has a poorly designed audio system.. Can anyone suggest otherwise?
