I've got one of these.... It's great on snare, vocals, bass, guitars I mean just about anything and it's the classic 160 sound too. I use mine everyday. $199 is a great deal.

Ok...I do not need this...I do not need this...I do not need this. Really, I have two FC526's. Wanna know what my vox chain is John? I pre process it with the DBX at like 8:1 knocking around 3-4db on the peaks with it working fast. I print that, and then use my FC526 like an Opto.... with a terribly slow release and mid attack and knocking around 2-3db off..... send me a vocal and I'll show you what that chain sounds like my friend. Massive. The reason I print the DBX is so I can have it for the snare.... so I'll probably go ahead and buy another one now that they are $200 freaking dollars... that's an insane price.

I usually track with the FC526 and then mix with the sta on Vox.

No doubt you have two killer comps for vocals, just saying that for the price of a plugin you can get a comp that is a swiss army knife, and a damn sharp one too.

Man, it's getting more feasible everyday to get out of the box. $200 is crazy if it's anything like the rack 160A. I like the 160A on bass and snare.
Looks like this deal is good until July 15th according to Sweetwater's site.

I guess once you factor in $50+/slot for power, used rackmount 160A's @ $250 are a similar deal. This seems to be a better move if you're trying to conserve space.

Ok...I do not need this...I do not need this...I do not need this. Really, I have two FC526's. I do not need it. I just say the B word they work great, special when bought for 40 bucks at f. e-bay. The Problem with the B Gear is its bad until they day you used one.

This is beyond a nutty deal! whats the big diff between circuits on the original 160 and the 160A/560A?(assuming the 560A is the 160A 500 series equivalent?) I believe the 160 rack ran off of 24v rails, obviously 16v rails on the 500 stuff. Thanx for any info 8)

I've heard them all, it sounds just like a 160a. Maybe they are stepping the voltage up?

The single rack U 160's have always been the obtainable great Compressor, if used right it can pretty much handle anything. I remember in about 88-89 raging along to a RATT show and seeing a 5 foot rack full of them. Early on I feel in love with the metering and still think its the most usefull metering on any Comp. I don't care what the folks at Alesis say, the 160 in one form or another is the most popular comp of all time, we sold them by the palette and come on have you ever seen a 3630 in a real studio? FOH? Drive rack? install or monitor rack? $199 is a nice price but I can buy 160x's used for $150 all day long! Plus you can always send them to our own JW and turn them into something special.

Yeah, if I didn't have a 900 rack.... Yeah again.....you can buy a 900A rack with nine 903's pretty frequently for under $600. You still have wiring to do is the only downside. But...they link/slave, 560's don't. Sound? Don't know. No hard knee in a 903, might or might not bother you. $199 might turn out to be the real long term price on 560's, it happens pretty often.

Picked one up from Sweetwater at $199. So far, it's a blast.
Loved it on bass - really added a nice midrange attitude to the bass.
Also liked it a lot on kick. Added a nice snap to the kick, making it stick out a bit more in the track without really altering the body.
Snare, I was a bit, ehhhh on it. I've gotten better results with other comps on snare.
Haven't had a chance to use it on anything else yet, but I'm dying to try it on vocals.
Nice, very quick to set up and get a sound.
At $199, if you have the 500 series space and are a 500 series junkie, well worth the money to add at least one, just to have that DBX snap in the toolbox. I'm really enjoying mine.
Regards, Frank

No step....
But man I love it on snare.... probably my favorite comp for snare to be honest, so many different sounds you can get by a combination of adjusting the threshold and ratio.....

Good deal, thanks for the tip on July 15, I might snag one by then. I am a big fan of VCA compression. I used to own a 160X and XT, and I do sometimes miss that sound.

So, what's the consensus of dbx hardware vs the UAD 160?

Apple has six compressors in their new update. I've had almost every plug in compressor known to man, and I swear, Apple's sound as good or better than all of them. Sometime's those deep pockets do buy something good I guess.
So, of the six compressors, at first I liked the "Red" Focusrite, but over time, it began to seem a little dull, I found the Urei 1176 to sound stunning, at first, but ultimately, it added too much distortion the get the incredible punch it has. So, I began using the 160 plug, and it combines the nest of both worlds, very smooth on vocals, with enough tightening up to give the track some muscle.
I thought the 160 was THE one to have if you're going DBX, not the 160X. This is great for $199. Still, I wonder how two hardware 160's would sound in a mixdown. I used the 160X every day for a decade before I sold off my gear. I can't say I loved the sound more than if I had a Sta -Level or an LA-2, but it sure worked reliably, and sounded fine.
Eric, what does JW do to them to "specialize"
