Hi guys,
I've managed to get a backing band together (finally) to go out and play some of my tunes. It's a great band - some real seasoned players - a couple of successful ex touring pro's.
I'm feeling my SM58 is getting old hat .... (or maybe not?)
I sound fab in the studio on a Wunder CM7.
So what's a great live hand held mic that has that U47 quality to it - not too bright and nice forward mids.
I see Sennheiser has a huge range, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. I'll probably eventually get a wireless version but to start with wired is OK.
Someone recommended a Senny 945s?
I have a bright tenor voice so nothing too bright - maybe the good old 58 is still the one?
I also have an original silver head basket M88 from the 80's but it's too valuable to me to take out live.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you like singing into the M88, then I highly recommend the M69TG.
It has a very polished sound, like the M88, costs less, and is great for live vox!

By far and away, the best live vocal mic I have ever used and thus own, is the Telefunken M80. If you just want the 47 mask, stick with a 58 or a beta 58. The T-funk is just so clear and beautiful sounding for live vocal (and a great snare mic in the studio).

My Wunder CM7 is the only mic I've ever owned that I felt sounds incredibly true to the source in terms of it sounds like I'm singing right their between the speakers - so life like - so true in tone, yet (and here's the magic) larger than life and with perfectly projected mids, almost an audio paradox. True to life yet larger than life. If only I could find that in a hand held live mic :-) The SM58 is definitely a certain sound, it's just a bit unrefined (so to speak) maybe the M80 will get me closer to my ideal - I'll see if I can land a demo.

LIVE? What mic can you spit on, accidentally have it fall on an alcoholic drink, twirl it around & round by the cable a la Roger Daltrey, have it fall on the hard stage or hit the concrete side wall & still sound the same?

I love the m88 live, sounds great and I think, as a live sound guy, it makes it way easier to dial in a good sound. I’ve used the tele m80 once or twice but never really had the time to put it through the paces, but I’ve always been curious about them. They could be a really great option.
Keep in mind the functional aspects of the mic, polar pattern, off axis sound, handing noise, durability, etc, are as important as how it sounds on your voice. Those factors will either help or hurt the AE who’s running sound.

I do a lot of gigging and I have 3 mics I always take with me. Senn e935, Tele M80 and an SM58. The Senn e935 is always my first choice. It has a nice proximity and you can work it with distance. The tele is also nice, has a brighter top, but I rarely use it, only if I'm in an awkward location with feedback problems. The sm58 is just a backup and or for someone else to use / spit on. I have a baritone voice.

Earthworks SR40V to Pueblo or Coil is the best live mic I have used and own (2). Better to my ears than my other keepers: DPA d:facto, KMS 105 and KSM8.
I don’t use eq, live or studio.

Well I am pretty picky about live mics. I have auditioned them all and my favorite but also the most expensive is the DPA d:facto II. I'm not a fan of the Neumann KMS 105. For years I used a modified Røde NT3 which I altered the capsule. These days I use an Audix VX5 and tame the highs. If I had to choose a dynamic mic it would be a Sennheiser E845 or a Shure SM7. Here's a clip of me singing live on TV using the Røde. A song I wrote in about 10 minutes when we were bored on a break doing music for a fashion show.
The audio is low so you you have to crank it a bit

I will be watching this thread. I have a dozen SM58's for live, because they are fairly indestructible. It might be nice to step up to something else for live use, but I wouldn't want anything too crispy or prone to feedback. I tried an i5 once live. Way too much top end for vocals, but I do like it on snare top a lot.
I've been thinking about the Audio-Technica AE6100.

I once recorded all my mics to compare them in the DAW. In the bunch I had a Stam SA47 and a Audio Technica AE5400 live condenser. To my great surprise, these 2 sounded extremely close, and you could pick them vs every other mic.
I did gig a while with the AE5400 and it sounded great and natural. But since then I switched to the Earthworks SR40V and like it better. I didn't compare it to my SA47 though, I should do it some time.
It is always best to try every mic, that's what I've done. Each voice is unique, and style, sounds system etc all play a part.

Just looked at the specs of the AE5400. I can see why it might be a bit like a 47 sound. The dip around 7-8K and then the high end slight boost. I had not thought of this one at all, but since I normally use a CM7 in the studio, this might be a real option. The price is a bit more than I had wanted to spend, since I need a few. I was also thinking about the e935 as well. So many options and so little extra cash laying around to spend.....

Like most of us, I'm sure, I've used a bunch of things over the past 25 years, and can make do with most decent options, but when I have the opportunity to use my own mic, I've generally settled on an Earthworks SR20. It sounds more natural and less phasey than anything else I've tried live. It allows my voice to sound like my voice. When recording live shows that I used the SR20 on, the vocals sound natural and finished, without need for a bunch of work in post.

Live, I sing into an M88TG. Great mic.
EDIT: Just looked it up, it appears to be in production. But it's THE SAME PRICE as an M88 from what I saw. The M69 used to be the M88s cheaper little brother. What gives?

Some reviews state they don't handle a drop very well. A 58 seems to be able to take many drops without any issues. They may not sound the best but they are cheap and quite rugged. Out of those three, did you have a favorite?

Out of those three, did you have a favorite? I've used the sennheiser e835/e935 quite a bit while doing live sound. I've found them to be very reliable and durable. You probably couldn't chuck one at a brick wall and still expect it to work perfectly, like you could with a 58, but they handle the normal abuse that comes with live gigs quite well.

I don’t think I ever dropped it but it was clanging around in and out of suitcase/vans/clubs not exactly being babied. My favorite to sing into back then was probably the Beta 58. Not sure what I’d prefer now. The AT 5400 was the richest sounding.

My SM58 died a silent and quiet death with no abuse whatsoever. Just gave up the ghost. Very strange, but it happened.
