The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! Big mistake….use the Wunder!

"Wunder Bread". Cool name for a 70's soft rock cover band.
Could even become the toast of the town. Chris

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! In my FOH and wedge mixer days I can’t count the times I was told someone was going to upgrade the old 58, 9 times out of 10 after about a dozen different mics it almost always seamed everyone while not in love with the 58 they were comfortable with a 58. Mixing wedges I can’t count the time spent trying to EQ a “ better mic “ to sound like a 58, simply because everyone was comfortable with that 58 tone. So if you end up back in the land of the 58 you are not alone. The other thing with the 58 is I don’t think I ever found myself in a situation where the local SR provider didn’t have one, any other stage mic and I’m carrying 2 in my luggage. It's been good enough for McCartney for 50+ years :-) I also have a bright tenor voice and it does seem to compliment that kind of sound.

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! SE V7 is very similar, just a little bit flatter or whatever... but same basic tone. I noticed Phil Collins was using this mic on the last and final Genesis tour. I read the FOH engineer saying it was a $100 capsule on a $5000 wireless mic system :-) I thought it was a great endorsement for this mic from SE.

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! Big mistake….use the Wunder! Hey, joking aside now the band is all using IEM's a studio mic on stage isn't impossible! A while back I went to see Tears for Fears live (great gig - great band!) and Roland Orzabal had an AKG 414 as his stage mic! All the band were on IEM's and the drummer was screened off - it worked surprisingly well - great live vocal sound. My only criticism of singing on IEM's is my vocal pitching just becomes too tight and perfect. I've recorded rehearsals and it sounds like I'm recording a studio take not a live vocal. I've got to learn how to be looser when I'm on IEM's and oddly less controlled - I'm new to using them. If you stuck my Wunder CM7 in front of me on stage combined with my IEM's .... I really would struggle not to feel like I'm in the studio :-)

Thanks guys, lots of great suggestions and advice. I think my first main decision is wether I’m sticking with a dynamic mic or going into the world of hand held condenser mics. I’ve had a look around and you can go very high end with condensers like the DPA Defacto. My only concern would be if they’re overly bright. I tried my vintage silver basket M88 and it’s predictably woolly sounding compared to my 58 unless I EQ out the low mids. The M88 is a great recording mic when you back off 12” as the considerable proximity effect is much reduced (it has an almost ribbon old school quality) straight out of the box I’m still preferring the good old 58 ( good enough for McCartney for the last 50 years singing live) and as I sound great on an Sm7 I guess the 58 makes more sense. I’m going to a store to demo the 935 and 945 and a DPA Defacto. But I’m open to the idea the journey may lead me back to my old faithful mid forward, rock n roll 58! Depends on the type of singer you are, live I'm a bit OTT / loud so a dynamic suits perfectly. In the studio I'm more focussed on perfection in context with everything else so tend to be a bit "mousey" or self aware so I'll always opt for a condenser. I tend to be mid voiced and can get a bit bright on occasion, the best mic live for me is the MD-441U and I can use it interchangeably for both applications (live or studio) if necessary. It's not a cheap mic to replace though and stuff happens when playing live so I usually end up with a 58 even though I ain't much of a fan.

Are they making the M69 now? I know they were not a couple years ago....
Live, I sing into an M88TG. Great mic.
EDIT: Just looked it up, it appears to be in production. But it's THE SAME PRICE as an M88 from what I saw. The M69 used to be the M88s cheaper little brother. What gives?
Well, that's weird! I just looked around and it seems to be in limited supply. Maybe it's on the kill-shelf, and they are just draining the remaining supplies.
I like mine a lot, though. It has a processed sound -- but in a good way. Not quite as heavy-handed as the M88, but still the recognizable Beyer sound.
When I was with FM the M69 was our standard vocal mic. Heart, The Commodores, Rossington-Collins, etc....

And during the 90’s the Beyerdynamic M700 was the fashionable Stage mic for Clair Bros ( watch those Eagle and Fleetwood Mac Reunions). Having had the same Beyerdynamic Rep as Cubby had during the Hell Freezes over tour I was always amazed we didn’t see any pressure to push it, but I do think while overall the 88 and 69 are better mics with a Clair rig the M700 is a better fit. And that brings up an important point with stage mics that can make huge difference, are you carryover PA? If I have the same rig every night a. Highend Condenser is great, but if I’m busting my ass trying to get decent tones out of a rig that almost meets the rider night after night a 58 will hide one hell of a lot.

Hi guys, I've managed to get a backing band together (finally) to go out and play some of my tunes. It's a great band - some real seasoned players - a couple of successful ex touring pro's. I'm feeling my SM58 is getting old hat .... (or maybe not?) I sound fab in the studio on a Wunder CM7. So what's a great live hand held mic that has that U47 quality to it - not too bright and nice forward mids. I see Sennheiser has a huge range, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. I'll probably eventually get a wireless version but to start with wired is OK. Someone recommended a Senny 945s? I have a bright tenor voice so nothing too bright - maybe the good old 58 is still the one? I also have an original silver head basket M88 from the 80's but it's too valuable to me to take out live. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I just posted about some new Senn mics above but you cant go wrong with either a E935 or E945. I would recommend try before buy to determine which is better for your voice. mc
