I cried lonesome a blue trail of tears because it was my first microphone, gift from my very own father.
I should write a song about this.
My first mic, my essem fifty eight Given by dad on a specific date You made me sound loud for twenty years Then you suddenly died, a blue trail of tears
Now dad's getting old and I'm showing grey Loss sickness old age death and decay But life is so beautiful I just want to say Peace knowing nothing is the right place to stay
I'll join you with flowers at the end of your fight Waking like lighting on a cloudless night A blue trail of nothing and blinding white light There was no one to lose, nothing holds tight
But the sound echoes on through deep voidless space To the very end, to that very place To be or not be, to see and not see Everything must be given, and I give it today
Everything must be given, I give it today

My SM58 died a silent and quiet death with no abuse whatsoever. Just gave up the ghost. Very strange, but it happened. I don’t own one at the moment so While my son’s guitar Gently Weeps!

at least it died peacefully in its sleep although in this case dying a horrible public microphone death on stage could have been more exciting

If you like singing into the M88, then I highly recommend the M69TG. It has a very polished sound, like the M88, costs less, and is great for live vox! Are they making the M69 now? I know they were not a couple years ago....
Live, I sing into an M88TG. Great mic.
EDIT: Just looked it up, it appears to be in production. But it's THE SAME PRICE as an M88 from what I saw. The M69 used to be the M88s cheaper little brother. What gives?
Well, that's weird! I just looked around and it seems to be in limited supply. Maybe it's on the kill-shelf, and they are just draining the remaining supplies.
I like mine a lot, though. It has a processed sound -- but in a good way. Not quite as heavy-handed as the M88, but still the recognizable Beyer sound.

Did you ever have any troubles with the e935? Some reviews state they don't handle a drop very well. A 58 seems to be able to take many drops without any issues. They may not sound the best but they are cheap and quite rugged. Out of those three, did you have a favorite? I've used the sennheiser e835/e935 quite a bit while doing live sound. I've found them to be very reliable and durable. You probably couldn't chuck one at a brick wall and still expect it to work perfectly, like you could with a 58, but they handle the normal abuse that comes with live gigs quite well. I've been using an e935 for close to 5 years for regular gigging and I haven't had any issues. It has a pretty robust build and feels more solid in hand than a 58. When i first switched to the e935, it seemed to be more sensitive to plosives than a 58 so I installed a "popper blocker" which fixed the problem: www.fullcompass.com/prod/202134

I’ve been digging old AKG C535EBs lately. Along with KMS84i and the KMS100 models (4&5). Also don’t forget the Sennheiser 441 with a foam pop filter. All great live mics. The Neumanns have a little more handling noise than the AKG.

I sound fab in the studio on a Wunder CM7. The nice thing about the Wunder is that it is still made and not vintage like a real U47. You could just bring your CM7 and sing right into it live. If it gets busted, fix it or just buy another! YOLO

I really love the sennheiser 609, same price as 58, sounds clearer and looks cool too. Not necessarily magic or mojo, but better than 58 for me

I have a bright tenor voice so nothing too bright - maybe the good old 58 is still the one? Ack! Just saw this tidbit….I would avoid the 535EB then.

I dunno. James Taylor used it for ages. And his top end is bright like mine. (I was surprised/impressed with the GAP version of a C800G as a Studio mic BTW) Chris

Thanks guys, lots of great suggestions and advice.
I think my first main decision is wether I’m sticking with a dynamic mic or going into the world of hand held condenser mics.
I’ve had a look around and you can go very high end with condensers like the DPA Defacto.
My only concern would be if they’re overly bright.
I tried my vintage silver basket M88 and it’s predictably woolly sounding compared to my 58 unless I EQ out the low mids.
The M88 is a great recording mic when you back off 12” as the considerable proximity effect is much reduced (it has an almost ribbon old school quality) straight out of the box I’m still preferring the good old 58 ( good enough for McCartney for the last 50 years singing live) and as I sound great on an Sm7 I guess the 58 makes more sense.
I’m going to a store to demo the 935 and 945 and a DPA Defacto.
But I’m open to the idea the journey may lead me back to my old faithful mid forward, rock n roll 58!

I used the DPA once and while it’s a clear mic, the off axis sound from the band was ….. “unkind”.

I recently purchased a new sm58 with TAbfunkenworks transformer upgrade from ZenPro Audio not surprisingly it sounds like a 58 with a transformer upgrade which is quite nice thought I would add that to the suggestion list if an sm58 has not been ruled out completely
echoing the above comments; of the mics I have tried the 58 does the best job of rejecting extraneous noise and resisting feedback

The gold standard for feedback rejection is the Beta87a, you can stick that sucker in the horn of a live wedge and most of the time it won’t howl!

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58!

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! In my FOH and wedge mixer days I can’t count the times I was told someone was going to upgrade the old 58, 9 times out of 10 after about a dozen different mics it almost always seamed everyone while not in love with the 58 they were comfortable with a 58. Mixing wedges I can’t count the time spent trying to EQ a “ better mic “ to sound like a 58, simply because everyone was comfortable with that 58 tone. So if you end up back in the land of the 58 you are not alone. The other thing with the 58 is I don’t think I ever found myself in a situation where the local SR provider didn’t have one, any other stage mic and I’m carrying 2 in my luggage.

The more I read - the more I'm thinking I may just end up sticking with my 58! SE V7 is very similar, just a little bit flatter or whatever... but same basic tone.

Every single time singing at an Open Mic/Pro Jam/onstage with a Pro Band... I always was asked "what mic"? After using my AKG D790. (In a good way ) Chris

FWIW, I have a 945 and while it sounds smoother through the mids than a 58 , it has an extended top end which meeds heavy LPF in the live environment. My personal fave is the old Shure 548 which now sells for crazy prices. Cheers, Ross
