Next time I’m around a D12 I’ll try to put a 666 beside it for comparison. The description is so similar, yet I know they are different. My ev666 does not have the same kind of low end. Wonder if it is not healthy? How similar is the low end of the 666 to a re20?
Both my re20 & pl20 have a lot more low end than my 666. I think the 666 freq chart shows a few dB lower than the re20 at ~80Hz (maybe 6dB?)
I have a D25 that is my favorite bass mic (mostly used on kick drum though). I used to have a D12e that I would use on bass guitar which also sounded good but that whole AKG line varies mic to mic I think. And some lose the low end regularly and you have to realign the diaphragm, which happened a couple times with the D12e. Frankly they are a pain and if the D25 didn't sound so amazing I wouldn't keep it because I dread the day when the low end won't come back. I had a D20 that I could not get re-aligned to bring back the bass (gap / coil fouled or otherwise messed up)
Sounds like it's acting more like a 666R. My 666's and RE-20 are reasonably similar. My 666's are pretty similar to each other.

I didn't notice the 666R vs 666 at coutant. You're right, the freq response for the 666 is relatively flat. I'll have to check mine out again. I think it's a 666?

I dunno... by simply improving what I have while almost never letting anything go I've accumulated a pretty good (and fairly large) collection. Just sounds like hoarding to me. You can never have too many microphones.

Are you doing that alignment your self ? Do tell

Yes, there was a thread at groupdiy years ago with a method. Once you take the screens off etc..., hook a signal generator up to the mic and slowly turn up the amplitude. You are exciting the capsule like a speaker and you can hear it - sweep the frequency down and you will hear where the low frequencies distort / die out. Pause the signal generator, slightly loosen the screws on the ring that clamps the diaphragm and gently try to get it aligned in a way where it doesn't have any interference. You barely have to nudge it. Keep trying this until you have the diaphragm tightened down and the frequency sweep with the signal generator sounds good all the way down to low frequencies. If there is any contamination in the voice coil groove or the voice coil is out of round you may not be able to find a sweet spot.
I checked and my 666 is labelled '666' - I'll have to take a look inside to see if anything looks off with the capsule. Maybe a little cleaning is needed.
