Something like this would be perfect for my setup. The Brauer topic made me want a small console back I still have all the wires from the last one....
DAMN COVID TIME.....

That is a very cool piece of gear. I can’t help but wonder why none of the Neve clone manufactures makes something like this. I think it could sell loads for the right price. It feels more like a real console than SSL six and similar small offerings.

I feel like the 'right price' would be the hurdle.

He had made something EXACTLY like that and done a pretty good job of it. Despite Rupert's oft rumored dismissal of Mr. Tanner, nobody has an issue with the products!

Their website is down half the time anyway, and Vintage King still lists their products, and I know VK was the only place that listed some of their units. Anyway, FWIW the Aurora Stinger desktop preamp/eq/fader was $1500 for a single channel.

Well with what's being offered by a lot of manufacturers today, even Neve, you could get 10 channels of goodness cheaper.

Purely by chance, I happen to have spoken to Geoff last night and he told me they are still in business, at a reduced capacity due to the resurgence of the virus in CA. I think you can still get product that’s in dealer stock. A sidecar, which you are right, would be perfect, might take a while.

So why doesn’t any manufacturer put together a small console with 8-10 nice pres, eq and transformer on the channels and 2-bus. That doesn’t cost 20 000$. But I do understand that it’s most likely me not understanding how difficult and expensive it would be, otherwise someone would have done it already.

Well it certainly wouldn't add an extra 5-10,000 dollars to the cost but most people want it for tracking anyway

I did make a reference to a dismissive attitude towards him, and perhaps that's the root of some not liking Geoff. Certainly not because he isn't likeable. I mean to get me some Aurora gear too . . . Some day.

Well the API the Box is interesting if you want API but it's only 8 channel for 17,000 dollars. For the same price you could get 16 channels of the new Heritage HA-81a or even more of HA-73 units and that isn't even considering other manufacturers.
Yes mixers have some other features but I think few people today actually want to mix on them and you could always add a summing unit if you really wanted it.

There's the 16 channel Trident 68 console for only $12.5k. Never seen any of the newer trident consoles so I don't know what the build quality is like.

Of the Tridents if it isn't an A Range or an 80 series it isn't in the same league as these modules we're discussing. The eq in the 80 series was so limited it could only be really used on sources that were without major problems. Their preamps sounded good and their summing.

I worked at a studio with two A Ranges. Still I wonder about some of these small mixers, to the right person I'm sure they could be great (assuming they're not total junk).

Well I worked on a Trident A range, 3 80b's and a couple of 65's. The 65's were comparable to a small soundcraft board. Rainbow Studio in Oslo that did all the ECM jazz fusion stuff had a Trident Vector. The literally used all outboard stuff and just used the board for summing.

The 68s are transformerless, with a THAT 1510 pre. The EQ looks ok - low and high shelf, two mid bell Qs. Huge frequency range though.
They look nice and I bet they sound good too.
Also, when you consider the 16 channel comes with EQs is not really fair to compare it to the Box with unloaded 500 slots.

What I’m wondering is basically this: Heritage HA73EQ is a 1073 clone with carnhill trafos and an output trim for 900$. Shouldn’t it be possible for Heritage or some other manufacturer to basically take the components from 8 of these and make a box with faders and a 2-bus with trafos for 10k-ish? API the box is vastly more expensive, even without eq, but has some other cool stuff as well of course.

The Box 2 is eight channels of 200-series mic pres and EQs with eight empty 500 series slots on the left of a main center section, which includes a compressor and monitoring facilities. To the left of the center section are 16 summing channels, with faders and some other goodies. Channels have inserts, mains have inserts, direct outs, access to the 500 series slots seperately from anything else - if desired. It is rather sophisticated and, while we all wish it were less costly, seems a great value because it's a lot more than simply channel strips.

Let's see if this can happen. Audiomaintenance (AML) has the ez1073, and sells it assembled (without any enclosure) for £550 (vat excluded). Take 8-10 of those. It already has a output level potentiometer, but that can easily be replaced by a fader. They also have the ez1073-line line amp for 500 series. 2 of those for the summing and you're good to go. This cost £300 assembled each. What else do we need: a frame, and a 500 rack for the summing amps. The frame is the difficult part, but with some isep rails (what they used at neve themselves, the frontpanels which are readily available, and some sidepanels it can come a long way. €800 for the frontpanels at frank from frontpanels.de, for the other parts lets be very careful and say it's another 1000€/$/£. So: quick calculations: channels: 8x £550 = £4400 = €4800 summing: 2x £300 = £600 = €660 frame: €1800 500-rack: radial powerstrip for example: €420 faders: 8x €15 = €120 TOTAL: €7800 And: the modules are already soldered. It's also possible to solder them yourself than substract £1380 from the total price for the components. But to think that the assembled price is more than the neve 5422 which was linked here above...

You have to toss em in via the 500 series.
