Warren Huart's Lewitt demo was impressive and then factor in the price. Very cool! Cheers Ross
Yes it was and I always ask myself why Warren can do an extremely close micing make sound sooooo good. My guesswork is the mics go into the console EQs.
me too think its eq'd. because where's the boominess?

I would like to submit Bret Teegarden's new PPC 125 Mic to the thread... I just heard samples that sounded quite amazing! I am going to get a pair for myself and will report back. In full discloser I am a dealer of his products....

Just get the Soyuz 0-13 FET and you're golden. It's worth every penny and is the only SDC I've heard that competes favorably with the KM-84. Used c460’s, my personal favorite if your patient a pair of used Sony C535p’s. If you can find a T power adapters some of the early Sennhiser MKH can be had pretty cheap if you move fast. On the cheap Old C451’s and Shure SM81’s are not as bad as everyone says. If you put one up on OH or acoustic, move it around a bit you will hear the sound of the 80’s and early 90’s. These are all excellent suggestions. We're just missing the best one (imho). I haven't enough experience with every single microphone mentioned here but there is one that is a worthy replacement candidate: It's natural sounding, beats KM84s on drum overheads and don't sound quite as hyped as KM184s. I absolutely love mine... and have a bunch of SDCs to compare them to. Beyerdynamic MC930 (see below links) Sweetwater matched pair new $999Zen Pro audio single for $599Cheaper in Germany! And Even CHEAPER!

I believe I mentioned the MC930 a few pages back, LOL. I don't have any but it might be the next SDC I try. They look very appealing, and I believe in the brand.

LMAO . . . I seriously laughed so hard at that! I love your humor, Dr. Bill. And remember, if at first you don't succeed. skydiving isn't for you.

I'd love to skydive all the 930's out of a plane @ 35k feet.

I'd love to skydive all the 930's out of a plane @ 35k feet. This sounds close to EmRR ‘s level hate for KM140s I’m a Neumann man myself but always thought Beyer makes really great stuff too. What don’t you like about the 930s?

I'd love to skydive all the 930's out of a plane @ 35k feet. What don’t you like about the 930s? That they don't completely disintegrate when they hit the ground? But more on point : I don't particularly care for their tone, and I don't like the off-axis polar pattern - especially is smaller rooms or problematic rooms. The KM84's are WAY more graceful in those situations.

I got a pair of mc930's on sale for like $650, at that price I say they were well worth it. But I thought my Miktek c5 was flatter in the upper mids and overall sounded nicer.
I can't compare them to km85s, so I'm no help there. For me, I really don't prefer SDC on just about any source. I like LDC's and Ribbons, and dynamics much more. It YMMV

I haven't heard it, but at $600, I doubt the Beyer Dynamic will be as attractive as the Soyuz 0-13 FET to someone looking for an KM 84 type mic. They're priced the same. The 0-13 FET is almost like a KM 84 modernized.

I'd love to skydive all the 930's out of a plane @ 35k feet. At 35K they sound just like a KM84 to me! After being ejected, I've found that somewhere between 35,000 feet and 30,000 feet, they sound virtually identical. But the polar pattern becomes more and more critical as you get closer to 0 feet, with the Neumann winning big time at anything below 12,000 feet. At 0 feet, if you were dumb enough to toss your 84 along with the 930's, your recordings are going to sound flat either way.

MC930s are beautiful mics!
They exist in their own space and have a processed sound. You either like the space and processing or you don't!
Like all Beyer mics, they are very focused. These are the kind of mics you back-off of sources. If you need something up close-n-personal, look elsewhere.

They just never worked for me, unless they were 40 feet out from the source on a large room live recording for ambience, sounded great then. Had them 21 years!

Has anyone tried the Vanguard V1? It comes with several different caps and the tracks I've heard sounded good.

Schoeps SDCs sound like old-fashioned mini cassette recorder microphones with the built in on/off switch.

If I could afford a Schoeps we would not have this thread... and nor a COVID-19 VIRUS
