Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat will do it better than water and sweetener. In the late 80's I was producing a record for a friend. The vocalist was Ken Prymus. He was the lion in the Wiz on Broadway at the time and sang eight shows a week! At every rehearsal, he asked me to boil water for his tea. I finally asked him about it and he said he couldn't do what he does without it. I didn't quite believe it, but I tried it, and damn, it REALLY worked. I sip it now 30-50 minutes before recording vocals. The thing is, the other brands with similar names and claims just don't work as well, and it tastes good. I know a lot of people who swear by this stuff, but I have never used it myself.

After recording dozens of singers over a decade, I've seen it all.
Nothing really works as a trick that I can tell
The oldest and best way is to get the singer comfortable by telling jokes and shooting the shit and let them warm up with a bunch of takes!
Nothing keeps singers from doing their best more than criticism too early in the process. They're always uptight before getting in front of the mic and getting right to business is usually worse than easing them into it.

IMHO there is room for many kinds of voices, in Popular Music. Patron Saint being Bob Dylan, all the way from the 60's. (Big Durante and Prima fan too BTW) FWIW for my personal singing focus, it's being a storyteller, with a pleasant voice. So lots of listening/singing to the great 60's/70's singer/songwriters. Chris P.S. You have a fine voice and are an excellent storyteller yourself!

What if you suck? What then?😂 I created a scratch vocal for a singer who just couldn't sing in tune. Once he was singing along with the scratch vocal, he was fine. That and a little melodyne. SMH. I wish I had done that sooner. I didn't do that until after the 26th take.
