Spent most of the day setting up my studio's private pub (BarFunGul) for our annual Christmas Party. This is the 23rd year I believe. ON TAP for this special occasion: 1 - ST. Bernardus Christmas Ale 10.0% 2 - Corsendonk Christmas 8.1% 3 - Delirium Noel 10.0% 4 - Scaldis Noel 12.0% and I'm still anxiously awaiting for one more to be delivered. Sammiclaus 14.0% Besides those 5, I also have 150 (give or take) GREAT imported beers from around the world, in cans and bottles. with NO AMERICAN CRAP! Should be a good night.

Eric, And I'm not too thrilled that the damn package needs to be connected to a computer to work properly. But for my purpose, as used in my remote recording rig, it's a beautiful set up.
That being said, for someone wanting a great sounding summing unit, (without faders) It's really a no brainer!

I have 2 x 8816's with fader packs, in two of my portable (remote recording) rigs. In those situations, they (8816's) are usually used for monitoring the outputs or playback of tracks from the Radar recorder. Usually all my mic pre outputs (into comps) are wired directly to the Radar. And in that capacity they work beautifully. But I must say, when the racks are back here at the studio, I have done quite a bit of mixing thru them, and I have to say, they sound Wonderful. Really great. They offer quite a bit of options in such a small footprint. Attachments:

The 8816 Summing mixer is a wonderful little unit. Sounds GREAT! Lot's of good stuff crammed into 2 rack spaces.

It has to be about 20 years ago now. Back then I was dismayed with what I was doing at that time in the studio...
Basically doing a lot of very heavy, and instrumental prog stuff. You know the stuff that takes hours & or days just to get 30 seconds printed.
Not my cup of tea so to speak, & Not what I signed on for. Plus the editing, and processing was ridiculous. Wasn't really music anymore...
But I had a good reputation for that genre and my clientele loved the studio & it paid the bills! But that was part of the problem, I was doing that, just to pay the bills. The love of making music was lost. I wanted more.
One day I was speaking to audiophile friends of mine, (writers for Fi & Sterophile magazine) and I told them I was in the doldrums making music this way, and a few of them invited me over to their homes to give a listen to their systems. So I went and listened to many systems, and all different types of music (other then heavy shit) The experience changed my life. Listening thru some of these systems blew my mind. I had never heard playback so realistic anywhere like what I was hearing, even in small apartments. Astonishingly good.
Granted they weren't playing death metal and the like, but that said, I never heard anything like it before. You were inside the music, it was a revelation.
So off I went into Audiophila land.
Spent about 75K on a small but amazing little system for my then apartment living room.
Wilson Watt Puppy 8 Speakers (94 db efficient) Moth Audio single full range driver speakers Cary Audio 300B Signature Single Ended 300B Mono Block Triode amplifiers, Cary Audio Signature Tube Pre-Amp Wadia CD turntable Mark Levinson, 36 D to A convertor Mark Levinson 333 Power amp (for when I wanted a transistor amp) Siltech, Nordost, and Kimber cables. Genex 9000 for playback of raw DSD mix files, (I had the Genex 9048 Multitrack DSD recorder in the studio)
Life was good, and well recorded music was (is) breathtaking on this system...
OK, so long story short, this brought me back, I now had hope as there was beautiful music being made, and recorded. And the sonics I heard from this system made me smile again.
Then one day, Geoff Daking was in the studio with me commissioning the very first Daking 52270 Console.
When we took a break, I told Geoff about my new system, so we walked over to my place, and I started playing him some stuff. He thought it sounded wonderful, and asked what was what, and how much this & that was etc, etc... Now if you know Geoff, then this will come as no surprise. When we got to the cables, he said.... (and I quote)
WHAT ! You paid HOW MUCH for this shit. "You bought into this HiFi HOMO CRAP" Come on, take me into town now! So Geoff & I drove directly to the hardware store, he then purchased a $5.00, 6 foot (2 prong) brown electric extension cord. When we returned to my place he then cut the ends off, and said OK, let's give your $$$ speaker cables a good listen, and then replace them with this, and tell me if you hear a difference... He & I, and all my assistants came over, and we listened, & listened.
I'm sure you can figure the rest out.
Ethan does have a point~!
Ps, I still have the system, the $$$ cables, as well as the cut off extension cord! And yes, It still sounds amazing !

I haven't heard the new Eaton Tannoy's, but up to about 8 years ago, before I moved into this new (much smaller space) I owned and used everyday in my two rooms.....
2 x pairs of PBM 6.5's 2 x pairs of PBM 8's 2 x pairs of NFM 8's 2 x pairs of LGM 12's (dual concentric) 1 x pair of FSM dual 15's (15 inch concentric) 1 x pair of FSM 15 (single 15 inch concentric) 1 x pair of Vintage Lancaster speakers
And when I moved, I sold EVERYTHING Tannoy. Funny, & or Sadly enough, I missed that sound, and what dual concentric (or point source) speakers brought to the table. I never thought the newer Tannoy's sounded the same as my old pairs, I moved on, and bought the much newer technology KEF LS50's anniversary monitors. Simply put they are amazing !
I personally believe, for the money, nothing touches them!

I don't have enough time right now to even get into the AUTOMATION... As It used to turn itself on and off randomly, in the middle of sessions Trust me, I have nothing but fond memories of my time with Harrison. Haha But, obviously your time spent with said consoles, is much different. That's a beautiful thing. As for me, I cannot talk bad enough about them. End of rant.

I just purchased a new mic for a session I'll be doing in about a week. A dear friend who is a well known singer songwriter will be performing live in the great room in his house. I wanted something simple to set up, as we are gonna keep it really raw. Basically just him singing, and whatever stringed instrument he decides to play for that particular song. I have a few good stereo choices, Neumann SM69 Tube, Royer SF-12, & a MBHO Jecklin Disc, but I wanted something a bit different, so I just purchased a new Josephson C700s Man is this a impressive looking microphone. I really can't wait to put it thru some tests... Only drag is, I won't be able to try it out till next week! Attachments:

And even then, it doesn't mean it's correct...
I purchased a Harrison MR-4 many, many, years ago... Had two independent techs from Audiotechniques come in and wire it into our patchbay and all the studio gear. Took about three or 4 days to wires everything up. Only to find out, that the manual from Harrison was INCORRECT... The techs wired everything as laid out in the manual, but the wiring diagram was incorrect. Everything had to be redone, at our expense!!!
When I called Harrison on it, they said, "OH yeah, the first edition of that manual has a few errors in it" Sorry...
That was only the first in a long list of horror stories while I owned that console!

Tony Arnold, the man behind the recent Helios reissues, is gone.
A good friend and a true Gentleman. Loved talking to him, his stories about this biz, were unbelievable.
Gonna miss him.

Starting mic testing for a singer / songwriter session coming up in the next week or so... Today we shot out (tested) on vocals... Coles 4038 Soundelux U95s Soundelux U99 Neumann U67 (original) Neumann U87 (1970) Neumann 149 Neumann KM 256 And simultaneously on the acoustics.... Neumann KM 256 (one and then two) AKG 451 (one & two) Gefell UM70 (one and then two) Royer SF-12 Stereo Coles 4038 Neumann Sm69 stereo tube AKG C-414EB (one and then two) Neumann KM 84 (one and then two) We're done for the night, but for now it's the Neumann SM69 stereo tube on the guitar, and the Soundelux U95s on the vocal... More testing tomorrow... But what I'm really waiting for is the new Josephson C700s I just ordered ... specifically for this project... Hope it comes soon, otherwise we'll have to pick one of the above? Haha. Oh well.... Attachments:

I just had this one made for me... Very cool & different instrument, called the Dobrato. Has a sound all it's own. Basically a Dobro, with a custom modified Bigsby that has a "B" bender installed. This Bigsby arm works as normal when used as a vibrato, but when you pull the arm up it is a "B" bender. Can be locked and set for 1/2, 1, 1+1/2 steps. Very, very cool... Although takes a bit of getting used to to work it correctly! Still learning.

Like my Wilsons....which are 94 db efficient.
I've owned his 1st Watt amp, amazing designs!
And I still use my Cary Signature, 8 watt Single Ended Triodes all the time, my favorite amps. Mated correctly to the right monitors, these amps are very revealing!

Kinda bummed,
Just found out Jason and the 400 Unit, are performing tonight at the Ruth Eckard Hall in Clearwater, which happens to be about 2000 feet from where I'm sitting right now! i heard the sound check, and saw them loading in. I'm at my moms house in Florida, and she lives right next door to the joint.
My plane back to New York leaves in a few hours... Who knew?

Dror, One of the units is always on the lead vocal channel, for either chorusing, doubling, and or just delay of some sort. #2 - Is usually placed on the lead guitar channel for width, and left, right, panned delays. #3 - Is the floater, that can either be on BK Vox, Keys, or on occasion, a rhythm guitar part.
The ability, to duck the delay so It doesn't get in the way of the original part, is worth the price of admission alone?

I own 3 of the original 2290's. I believe they are the greatest delays ever created! When mixing with my console from Radar they are used every mix.
I might have to purchase this for those times I'm mixing with the computer and not the console.
