Because I own their frei:raum plugin, I was sent an offer to grab the smart:EQ 2 for around $10. I grabbed it even though I had no pressing need because... well, 10 bucks. The claim is that it uses some form of AI to examine a track and create a custom filter curve. I was pretty skeptical but like I said before... 10 bucks. I tried it out on some old acoustic guitar tracks that I remembered were problematic when it came to getting the sound where I wanted. I bypassed the eq I had on the track and let the smart:EQ 2 do its thing. It took about 15-20 seconds of playing the track for the plugin to finish its analysis but this thing got me as close as I had gotten without it and in a lot less time. The custom curve was a little boomy on the bottom but you can make very easily make eq adjustments in the plugin window after it sets the custom filter curve. I've only scratched the surface with this one but I like what I'm hearing so far. I don't think I'll reach for this often but when I have to deal with a track that's difficult to dial in, this plugin is a good first step. Has anyone else tried this thing?

Well I went ahead and bought a x16. It should be arriving next week. I look forward to seeing what it can do. I'm looking forward to hearing about this. If I'm going to upgrade from my Apollo Firewire it's going to be to the X16.

Let us know how you like the McBoost. I've had those on my wishlist for a while. I'll second that, jtc111 - I'm also keenly interested. I quite by accident stumbled into a project creating a song for a film short. I'll be busy with that for a bit but maybe next week I'll get a chance to give the McBoosts a go. I'd like to run Mesanovic through all four of my outboard pres and see how each sounds with it. My current room situation (way too small) isn't great for a ribbon mic. I really bought that mic for when I move out of here and upsize in the coming months. But maybe I can get something less than terrible if I use a couple of gobos on the back side.

I've had SD2 for a long time and finally decided to take the plunge on SD3 a few weeks back. I haven't had a chance to get into it too deeply yet but my initial impressions are it's quite an improvement over SD2 ...and I really love SD2. The easy access to individual pieces of other kits makes my brain smile. I need to sit and watch some of the tutorial videos but even with just my feet in the shallow end of the pool thus far, I'm really glad I jumped in.

I have a few transient plug-ins, but never quite wrapped my head around them. I think Fission (or Physion as they're calling it now) might be a huge help to you. It's a pretty amazing plugin and I've found it easy to use. I haven't needed to do exactly what you're describing but I did need to do something a bit similar with a bodhran track some time ago.

My dad asked what I wanted for my birthday next month. A pair of these showed up on my doorstep today. These should pair nicely with my recently acquired Mesanovic Model 2S to put all my preamps in play.

The question is where does one get a BF Apollo 16, new X16 and Symphony 16x16mkii from to try out side by side? Nobody is going to sell me all three letting me send two back, right? If you only bought one and decided you didn't like it, you could return it, right? I don't see why the rule would change if you bought three.

Latch Lake MicKing 2200. Seriously??? This thing could hurt someone. A solid mic stand can relieve a lot of stress. When it first arrived, I put my Flea on the sturdiest stand I had at the time and I could feel my sphincter tighten. I rushed through a test track because I wanted to get that mic off that stand as quickly as I could. As soon as the mic was safely back in it's box, I ordered an Atlas Sound MS25 and an Ultimate Support MC-125. Both myself and my sphincter are much more relaxed now.

If you don’t want Unison plugs and don’t need pres 16x, is the way to go. I never use the four unison inputs on my Apollo Firewire. I like my outboard preamps better than the unison stuff. I do agree with the folks saying its silly for UA to not offer unison with their best conversion, especially since it's a 16 channel unit. Unless there's a technical reason why it's not possible, I don't understand the logic of not having four unison pres on that box. For my own uses, I could've done with an 8 channel box with the better conversion, but it is what it is. I'll probably never wire up channels 9-16 ...or maybe there's a 500 chassis in my future. For feck's sake... talking to you guys costs me a lot of money.

I think I'll eventually go the X16 route. It's a huge upgrade from my Apollo Firewire.
UA Apollo Firewire ADC Dynamic Range: 117dB ADC ADC THD+N: -107dB DAC Dynamic Range: 118dB DAC THD+N: -106dB Monitor DAC Dynamic Range: 115dB Monitor DAC THD-N: -103dB
UA Apollo X16 - ADC Dynamic Range: 124dB ADC THD+N: -115dB DAC Dynamic Range: 127dB DAC THD+N: -123dB Monitor DAC Dynamic Range: 133dB Monitor DAC THD-N: -129dB
Losing the unison capability isn't a big deal to me. I have four preamps that I really like (Demeter, Hardy, Hendy, Sebatron). I have 4 racked compressors and another on the way. I'm good without the unison so may as well swing for the seats.

We no longer capture a performance, we now manufacturer a performance. Is that because it's a much more competitive business now where every Tom, Dick, and wise ass has a home studio capable of putting out some good stuff?

I tested out the Stam & Flea side by side on drums, acoustic and vocals: That was very well done and I'm sure it will be helpful to a lot of people.

Dangerous ST here. I’m so used to it anything else would feel strange. If I were to change, the Grace m905 would be nice to have- it has tons of features and a great remote. I think DrBill has one. Is there any downside to the Dangerous ST? I've been considering it. When I relocate at some point in the near future, I'm going to have a mirrored monitor setup with the second monitor behind my 88-key midi controller. I'll either set that up at a right angle to my mixing desk or behind my chair facing the mixing desk. My thinking is that since the Dangerous ST remote only has the one cable coming out of it, it's easier to relocate around my work space than say something like the Drawmer MC3.1. I read through the Dangerous St manual a bit and saw that it takes a Cat5 cable for the remote. I don't know if there's a limitation on the length of that cable. That would be the only possible snag for me.

Are they better than the Motu? When I swapped back and forth, I thought so...but I wasn't blind testing, so it could be confirmation bias. And that should tell you how close they are. John, which MOTU were you using?

It’s true. I break the monotony of this with new gear occasionally. Many of us do. If I wasn't planning on moving in some months, by now I'd have financed the new X16 and a Dangerous Music Monitor ST. I'm only holding back because I want to keep my credit score as high as I can until I buy the next house. Once that's done, I'll be shopping for gear again.

There's something to be said for the "if it sounds good, leave it alone" approach. But I don't discount the idea that inspiration can come from a variety of sources, and if someone is inspired by new gear, go get you some new gear.

Although, at some point, it just becomes incessant bitching. Isn't that to be expected every time another month that Josh announces will be the delivery month goes by with nothing to show for it? That's happened several times with this product. Now it's pushed into November so I think we can expect another round of expressed disappointment should November come up empty.

The chance of all of even half that list coming north in November is dubious.

That rumor has been around for years. It may be true that they are, but it's a long time coming. That can be true of any boutique shop! Yes, and I wasn't criticizing Flea. I own a Flea 47 and it's my best and favorite microphone. I'm just saying that if anyone is waiting on a Flea 67 to hit the market, it may never happen. Other than the Flea Next line, they haven't expanded their offerings in a long time.
