I'd choose the Stam

And Stam has a new one, which I don’t think people have yet ? I have one on order from the initial brushed aluminum batch, if I read correctly when I placed the order. When I get it in I can do some comparisons with the Audioscape. I love the AS Opto, and I'm just hoping that the Stam will be another flavor in the same ballpark.

After sending back a UA RI LA2A after a demo and thinking meh - too vanilla for my taste. I thought of well I'm never going to get an original Teletronix at todays crazy prices - end of story.
Then I spotted an Audioscape Opto mint condition for a great price and grabbed it to see what the fuss is about.
Wow - it has that vibe I was hoping the UA RI would have.
I think you can get different but I can't imagine you can get better than the Audioscape Opto Comp .... it definitely has that 68 vibe to me. A fabulous character opto compressor.
Beautifully put together I should add - hard to believe they put them out at the prices they do when you see the build quality and quality of the parts they've used!

Not a direct clone, but I'm liking the Summit Audio TLA-50 I got recently

Not a direct clone, but I'm liking the Summit Audio TLA-50 I got recently Yeah the Summit kind of sounds like a tube opto and really really has the look it only has 1 tube and isn’t opto. Of course in the world of live if I list tube opto on a rider I’m probably going to see a TLA 100 or 50 so go figure. With Blue gone nobody knows what’s going on at Summit . Who knows the designs are old enough maybe Audioscape or Stam will make a clone.

The Audioscape is great, I dearly love my Stam.
It's amazing how the operation and character of a 2A can change based on the T4 variant you use. I have three different ones, my favorite is the quick early 80s style from Bill at Kenetek.

I'm have an AudioScape 76d and a UA reissue. The 76d is used on just about everything. I'd buy it again. I've been waiting for Drew to pop in with a defense post. . . but nothing yet. We all wanted UA to come back to life and reissue all Putnam Senior's classics, at killer prices and Re-establish themselves, but that never happened. If companies like Stam and Audioscape (and others) can profitably make a re-creation of the original with better quality, lower noise, better performance and no smell of wax burning (you know what that means) for one 6th the universal price, why can't UA? They could. They choose not to.

Yeah, very personal, Kenetek is probably my fave of what’s currently available, overall faves was the pair of tweaked Anthony Demaria’s.

The JLM opto is pretty good, but no tube - which isn't a deal breaker for me. Sometimes i like its gain reduction more than my fingers riding the gain of the mic pre while recording. As mentioned in another thread: try to get a (i think he doesn't make em anymore) Valvotronics Gain Ryder. Two channels of stealthy tube opto comp. A bit cleaner than the LA2A, which is okay for me. I can dirty it up with other things if needed.

My IGS One LA (19” rack version) is my desert island comp. It’s probably the last of my comps I would let go. Sounds great and build quality is superb. Stepped elma switches are great for later over dubs. How is it compared to others 2a's?

It’s hard for me to make such a comparison as to how it differs as i have not had other units in my current setup nor have I a/b it. But it sounds as a 2a should. It has a slightly faster attack i think than la2a. I use it on every song I've tracked since i got it. Usually on vocals and bass. The sound is fat and you can keep within settings where it doesn’t color too much if you prefer. I know it doesn't often come up on forums, its european made, so its not common in the states, and there is actually not too many of them made. Very few rack versions going around at the end of the day. But it’s an amazing unit both sound and build wise. Would be nice to see a a/b video of thevigs and stam for example

Yeah I’ve also heard they should be really close. Have heard some a/b on those two and from that it seem you can get them really close. But its always hard to be sure before you sit with both of them side by side yourself to hear the nuance's. They do have a somewhat different setup tube wise, 2x6N1P-EW, 6N2P-EW, 6AQ5 in the rack vs the 500 series ECC802, ECC803. Transformers should be the same.

That's great to read about IGS. I've been eying the IGS Zen (Zener diode comp) and every review has been stellar for that one as well. I have not used the zen, but own the laone and tubecore, both stellar units. But I will likely be picking up a rubber bands pultec style stereo eq or a tilt’n’bands mastering eq from them at some point.
