You need a nice room for ribbons because of the figure 8 pattern. But you can fix a lot with well place gobos.

Not true, IME...fig8 is what you want in a less than nice room situation. Certainly drier than cardioid for a condenser. There are dynamics that will have better rejection, but most cardioid LDCs pick up more immediate room (thus problem reflections) than fig8. Only HyperC nulls more "space"...but, often makes quite a change in frequency response. Of course, you have to be aware of the backside--not put it with a flat parallel wall behind it or something....but...

Indeed. All cardioids are 50% Omni and 50% fig 8. super cardioids just have more fig. 8.

For those that tried them, does the Bluebird have a substantial advantage over the Spark?

For those that tried them, does the Bluebird have a substantial advantage over the Spark? Absolutely. The Bluebird is a true LDC, with better capsule than most chinese condensers. The spark's capsule is more like a SDC, but it's a sealed off-the-shelf capsule. Bluebird: microphone-parts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/mod5.jpgSpark: static.musiciansfriend.com/derivates/6/001/502/468/DV019_Jpg_Regular_H69294_capsule_closeup.jpgThe only complaint, besides selling my bluebird, is that the stalk that the capsule housing attaches to, is attached dubiously at best. I bought my bluebird used and the head had been broken off and glued back on. Not surprisingly it broke off again when bumped. I had to machine down the stalk slightly to get more metal contact before peening the tube to hold the head on tightly. The electronics looked like pretty standard fare and looked very much like those you'd find in other mid level mics.

The Bluebird is a great buy at that price... You can get them on ebay for around 150$-ish, which isn't bad for that price at all.
