Well, first evening of messing around with this setup is a success. Surprisingly so. I don't have SD3 yet so I was just recording MIDI and then playing that through Abbey Road 70s drums (the only drum VI I've got) and I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the performance transferred from the V Drums into VI land. Here's a quick muck around. I'm buying SD3 this weekend, sale or no sale.

I mean, it’s not really like real drums but it’s an expressive, playable approximation. I enjoy playing it.

Question for you Toontrack guys.
If you buy one of the expansion libraries like "Indiependent", can you incorporate, say, just a snare drum into one of the new SD3 kits? Or is it whole kit or nothing?
Could I have kick and room mics from the new Massenburg stuff that comes with SD3 but bring in toms and snare from Indiependent?

you can mix and match pieces from all the kits. the issue you'll run into is that the ambient mic channels might not blend together because the rooms used are different. you make an X-Drum, and under microphone assignment, pick where you want the bleed channels for that kit mapped: i.ytimg.com/vi/gFBf35g13as/maxresdefault.jpg

I’d start with just the SD 3 library. Great sounds in there.

I’d start with just the SD 3 library. Great sounds in there. No doubt. I’m probably gonna grab these too while they’re on sale. I will use these sounds a lot. Plus they were tracked at one of my favorite local studios (Avast!). I rent gear from there all the time. Amazing facility with amazing gear.

General question. Should I get an SSD for this?

I'd say yes as its the fastest and there is a lot of data in these files ? The SD pre-loaded drive is SSD.

I was hoping for a sale too, but maybe because it's still so new, Toontracks didn't want to go there.

Not like an acoustic but fun to play. Yeah from my initial testing I think this is going to work. I can come up with a recording that sounds and feels like a real kit. I have to approach it a little differently but I’ve been playing drums in a mostly recording/production context for 20+ years. I’m just used to thinking in terms of what’s going to tape and what I’m hearing in the cans. I don’t think this is gonna be that hard a transition for my world. I’m pumped about it.

I was hoping it would be on sale this weekend (though I know it probably wouldn’t) and now I’m just dragging my feet. I’m going to buy SD3, the Indiependent library and Keyscape and that’s about a grand. Don’t wanna spend it but I’m goung to.

in case you have been wondering about how to manage the download:
info from TT FQ:
IS IT NECESSARY TO INSTALL THE FULL 230 GB SOUND LIBRARY?
No, the sound library download is divided into 5 parts. The minimum install size is approximately 41 GB. Below are the specific downloads for the sound library. Sound library installations should be installed in order with one exception, the Additional Bleed Download. The Additional Bleed Download can be installed at any time after the Basic Sound Library (Download 1). This allows users to install the Basic Sound Library with all bleed in the minimum possible footprint.
Download 1: “Basic Sound Library” (All instruments, all tools and all articulations in close mics, OH Dyn and Amb Ribbon. Bleed in Snare Bottom (Kick and toms) , Approx. estimate 40gb) Download 2: “Room Mics 1” (The rest of the Room mics: OH Cond, Amb Near, Amb Mid). Download 3: “Room Mics 2 – Surround (5 ch)” (extra mics to achieve 5.0 surround, Front L/R, Center and Surround L/R) Download 4: “Room Mics 3 – Height Surround (6 ch)” (extra mics to achieve 11.0 surround, Front Height, Rear Height and Rear Height Wide ) Bleed Download: “Extra Bleed” (The rest of the bleed in the close mics). This installation can be installed at anytime after the initial Basic Sound Library (Download 1).
I wish they would have then priced these as components so you could buy what you want ? I could see myself using 1 and 2 and hardly ever using 3-5 ?

ragan does this sd2 plus the 2 extension price work for you ? in the sd3 faq, TT state that sd2 will no longer be for sale, so the sd2 deal for $107 is time limited: only for another 2 days ? If you are thinking about this, it would seem to make sense to get the sd2 deal for $107 asap, as the sd3 upgrade price (on tt or sweetwater) is not a bf sale price, also the combo savings almost buys you at least half of the bob rock expansion pack

I’m interested. The screen grab you posted is for EZ Drummer products, which are a different line altogether. Can you still buy Superior Drummer 2?
