Well, probably a good thing. Overpriced, honestly...

What I DO think you need to buy is a vintage Helios module and do your take on it. Put two trannies in it...That would make me very, very happy. Change the circuit a bit and call it "The Olympic"...

Well, I would just get one from Cobb to inspect. Honestly, I have a zillion other things to be working on!

Well, that was all just tongue-in-cheek, but it would be badass...an improved Helios circuit...
Of course, I guess that's just called Neve.

So, cowboycoalminer it's really worth having money in both the Symphony and Burl AD? Man...that's a lot of money.

I mix with a good bit of outboard so I need the I/O count. The Symphony fills that gap for me. If I only needed two channels in, I'd be satisfied with the Burl for good. I pretty much use it for one shoting these days. And to catch the buss mix.
I don't let cost bother me and here's why; instead of my money being in the bank, I have it right here in front of me. I make smart purchases (mostly used) so I can get my capital back out anytime I want, and get the use of my gear in the meantime. The money is still here, I'm just putting it to work instead of letting the bank benefit from it.

The money is still here, I'm just putting it to work instead of letting the bank benefit from it. This is my theory as well. After all, having money in the bank these days is a benefit to only the bank. With typical interest far less than 1%, I am much happier with having the gear.

Well...of course, the money could be paying off other things... but I digress... Anyway, here's the problem. I have a Mac Mini, so I have to have a FW or USB connection to get into the computer. So I would need an interface...I could get by with 2in 2 out, with ADAT. I could run out via ADAT to my Hearback system. I'd like to have more outs though, for the occasional outboard mixing. Know any cheaper interfaces with excellent DA?

a used Apollo maybe?

John I'd say if your limited to an either or type situation, you could definatly go with an Apollo for the additional I/O and SPIDF the Burl. Thats what I do in this case. That way you can track through the Burl with no latency and use UAD 2 stuff on the front end if you want. I picked up my Burl for 1900. A used qaud would be about that.
But if it was me, I'd just bite the bullet and add a Burl to the Symphony. Maybe try to think of your gear same as you would a pension fund, it's off limits for paying household bills and so on. That's really the only way I see you can stay sane.
It's also part of your livelihood so I'm sure you claim all your purchases on your taxes right?

Definitely...but I'm out of a deal right now...really shouldn't be spending any money. But, Uncle Sam will be generous next tax day, though. Then again, maybe some new monitors would satiate my appetite...

My Adam A7X''s were $700 over my meager budget, but when I walked in to buy their F5's, the A7X's were playing... so the moral is.. be careful what you listen to.

I just discovered the Rival Sons (and more respect for Dave Cobb) because Little Steven's Underground Garage on XM is playing the Son's "Electric Man." It's the first rock music I've been excited about in decades. I feel like I've been living under a boulder for the last 5 years. Great stuff.

I would love to hear more about the Burl. Is everyone still using there's? Did anyone buy it lately? It is a piece I have been looking at.

I was lucky enough to borrow one for a week or two, and it was impressive. The thing is, its not such a huge difference to many people, so they can easily do without it. To me, it helped bring my less than perfect tracks a little closer to a studio tone. I just can't afford it. It honestly does what they claim it will, bring serious analogue mojo to your work. Tracks felt much more like I'd gone through a great board with it. If there was something that did the same thing for say.. $600, I'd be on it. That's not to say it isn't worth the price it sells for, it's just way over my budget.
There are a few things in the works that may address this issue. Svart's converters are coming, and UAD has improved their converters too. It remains to be seen just how good they are, but I'm hopeful.

Cobb uses a CLASP machine to record to tape then into ProTools. Sorta what a Burl does? His records sound great in an old fashioned way. www.rollingstone.com/music/news/producer-profile-dave-cobb-20140723>"Dave showed me how to take control of a session, and how to follow your gut, no matter what people say," Jennings says. "The music he has made since his arrival on the scene stands tall in a forest of shit-music trees."

Yeah, like MJB said. It's not this monstrous difference that people might be expecting. In comparison to the Symphony - I'm saying this from memory - it was fuller in the bottom and seemed to have a little more on top. I sold it thinking I could live without it and bought it back for $200 more 3 days later. At this level, improvement comes in smaller increments.

I am almost ready to pull the trigger, but I am waiting until I hear feedback from the Svartbox converters.

I can tell you this - from what I heard of the prototype, the Svart box is phenomenal. There were some things I liked the Burl better on but others that I liked the SB better on. There is absolutely no way you could go wrong buying that piece. In fact, it's going to be transparent where the Burl is not. I could honestly work with either. My advise would be to get the svart box and use the extra money to upgrade your mics - imho, the mic is 80% of your sound, and the SB is going to translate that fantastically.

I agree with the general consensus here. Among converters, the Burl is special. It just sounds 'right' to me.
But it's still just a converter. It's not going to outweigh good mics and instruments.

Any opinions on the Burl B1 500 series pres? They're some of the more affordable two stage pres I can get down here.
