Friends please be careful showing your studio connected with your name, and or contact info on the internet.
I will never forget the day they did try to open my doors. They came back a second round, we had luck and caught them at work. LOL
Since then I write a wrong street info in the internet. Musicians do have to contact me first by phone and we a have a meeting in a coffee house... first.
If my instinct tells me something is wrong I tell them some BS why we cant work together.

Sage advice! I know a guy who was tied up at gunpoint and thrown to the floor while guys gutted his studio. Luckily his family was gone at the time. That's the day he moved his studio out of his home and to a commercial property.

A straight up wirey little crackhead robbed me. Pulled the sockets from the walls he was in such a rush. His then turned ex-girlfriend a year later contacted a friend of mine and told her what he'd done. 6 months later i had just finished a show and was outside the club with my bassist cooling down when he came walking down the street. As i dragged him into an alley i stopped to smack his head against a lamp post a few times when 5 oh rolled up. They saw a dreadlocked punk rocker all in black beating on a little homeless looking guy. I immediately related my story and while relating it the club owner and employees came up to be character witnesses saying: "if this dude" (me) "is beating that dude up, that dude deserves it" When the cops ran our names i came up clean (whew) and he was coincidentally wanted for bringing stolen items to pawn shops. They let me go with a warning not to "take the law into your own hands" and waited for 2 burroughs and 2 other counties to come collect him on his warrents. "Whoever gets here first" the cop told him.

No name drooping, but a friend runs a bigger studio with tons of vintage gear and vintage mics etc. He used a very expensive alarm system and a double steel door with 7 locks for each door. They used explosive material, like the army or the police, to open the steel doors. It took them 15 minutes to steal the most expensive gear. It was professional work, that is for sure.

And that was the whole point. Personally, my family's more important than "stuff". If you want "saving" - get yourself a commercial property with a 10' high chain link fence with helical razor wire at the top, a .45 velcro'd under the console with a shotgun in the office, a pittbull - or two - on the property inside the fence perimeter, keep an intern or 2nd there when you're not, and install a killer alarm system with CCTV and iPhone notification. That will go a long ways towards making things more difficult to get at.

Your property is your life. It takes time to earn money and that money is exchanged for property, and in this case tools for your work. That robs your life twice! I don't think politicians or bureaucracy really get that. They spend their money on disposables like suits, ties, shoes, drinks, restaurants etc whereas we build equipment and tools of our trade to further our work. Who else invests more than 100% of their earnings into their tools?

How tall are your ceilings, svart ? Also, how do you deal with foot traffic noise from the floor above?

How tall are your ceilings, svart ? Also, how do you deal with foot traffic noise from the floor above? About 8ft. The ceiling was open joists that I added mass between, then dropped about 4 inches to accommodate a foot of compressed fiberglass. Virtually no footsteps heard unless someone is really stomping and then it's more of a muffled thump.

The black areas are fire retardant burlap that covers packed fiberglass. Ceiling is almost completely dead.
