I kinda pulled out on fg-x a while ago...thought it was adding some crispness. Just pulled it up again and I was surprised at how good it sounded. I'm thinking it was just bringing out the inadequacies of my mixing...one question on fg-x - how do you set the brick wall? I can't seem to get it to well, brick wall limit. I've been using stealth limiter for a while and really liking it.

If you can hack it, this is actually a great tutorial on using FG-X. FG-X part starts around 5:30
FG-X doesn't have a tweakable output limit (that I know of). You just increase the gain. Are you getting clipping? I've never had that happen with FG-X.

Stealth for me, it's dino-riffic!

How much Gain Reduction are you letting Stealth do? I've usually not pressed it hard at all...but maybe I should be to get it louder.

BTW - is there a really good RMS meter out there? The Slate one is good, but I don't seem to be getting correct readings from the Stealth.

I've been using the FG-X only on my final printed stereo track after all mixing is done just to bump up the overall volume before bouncing to a wav or mp3. I've just been finding the preset I like best and then using the gain knob. It seems to raise the volume without changing the feel of the mix, but then again, I may not really know what I am doing.

Brainworx meter is probably like $9 or $19 from plugin Alliance, may be free with purchase of another plug
Prol L Vlad g limiter no6 is free and awesome plus it's about to be 2.0'd

I could never get FGX to work consistently, and get loud mixes that weren't distorted at parts. I liked the comp, but the limiter never worked well for me. Gave up on it. There are so much easier things to use that sound better. At this point, the only plugin compression I'm using on my mastering buss is *sometimes* the Tokyo Dawn Labs comp. It's deep, but works well and leaves minimal footprint if used correctly. But it IS deep, and I haven't really mastered it yet. When I'm not using that, I'm back to analog using the Serpent SB4001. Also SBullet in A mode for shaving transients, color and for it HF and LF EQ, then Manley VariMu for it's three dimensionality and gelling.
As far as meter is concerned, the Brainwork is awesome. Love it.

I've always been a 1-4db guy but have found myself accidentally abusing Stealth because I don't hear it happening. Developed my habits in the L1 days where I would've been happier if the limiter would just shut audio off past 4db reduction so I wouldn't bother to go back and listen to that pass and just run a cooler one. On Stealth, I'll sometimes bring it up and realize I'm hammering it for 8db and maybe I should tighten up that bus compression...

FG-x was hit or miss for me and would frequently get too crunchy. I switched to Ozone 7, and that has worked like a charm, and way better than Ozone 3, which was the previous version I had.
The limiter on 7 is absurdly transparent and I haven't been able to make it distort yet. The mid/side EQ is also very useful.

I've got a ton of them. Invisible limiter 2, slate, FF,etc

the "crunchy" is under your control....the two "punch" knobs and "dynamic impression" or whatever are controlling how much and what kind of distortion is left where it brickwalls.
this is one where I think FabFilter does a great job---but, then, I don't want "LOUD and modern". At all. I want transparent optimization with not ISP.

Yeah. Tried again tonight. It can get a little harsh and it doesn't have the ability to really brickwall in a nice manner. That's the really great sounding thing about the Stealth. It's clean as hell and when you push it, it has a really nice give or throw.

It's the slider thingy. And it seems to still not do what he claims.

Been wanting to try the new oxford V2 ( natively ) (UAD has been out but DSP is a premium ) Also ozone 7, stealth limiter, invisible v2, and one other I am forgetting about.
I prefer ISP anytime I mixing anything than is not 100% my work. I do this for the sake of peace of mind " thinking " it sounds better not clipping playback DAC?

I've got a ton of them. Invisible limiter 2, slate, FF,etc Fab Filter Pro-L was recommended to me a while ago by peeps regularly working on very well known artists, across genres... it's flexible and covers a lot of ground; since using it, I've stopped toying with anything else.

Yeah - the FF stuff is just lights out. Hope they come with a version 2 with even more flexibility - say like the Pro-C2...I actually thought the Stealth was a little cleaner, but I should try again...

Pro-L is my go to for sure. Though I always use a couple limiters in series. I sometimes use FG-X with a little compression (the compressor section of FG-X is one of my favorite ITB comps ever) and a little limiting/gain and then put Pro-L in "transparent" mode as my final brickwall.

Multiple hardware comps OTB (each not working too hard ) -> print, once ITB, Fab Filter Pro-L, done. Once I read the Pro-L manual and understood it functionally, I haven't looked back.

Fg-x seems to be somewhat off a hog. Do you guys open another session for mastering and import a 2 mix? I try to get away with staying in the same session just for ease. Not sure I could run two limiters in 4x mode or whatever.

Not sure I could run two limiters in 4x mode or whatever. Yeah it's a CPU monster. Make sure you have the current version. Awhile back they updated it and it became way more efficient. Still a hog but nowhere near as bad as it was.

I'm testing FF Pro-L and I like it, but what's with all the different modes and presets?
