True :-) But that said, my go to Limiter is STILL after all these years the TC Brickwall Limiter. I have just about all the limiters going including adding recently Ozonde 7 Advanced, but I still go back to the TC Brickwall Limiter if I'm only knocking off 2-3dB (which is all I do most of the time anyway) Nothing I own or have demoed is as transparent, the TC Brickwall leaves transients in tact especially kick and bass, like no other plugin I have used or demoed. To me TC go it right all those years ago, it's the U47 of the plugin limiter world, old technology got right from day one. I really hope TC/Behringer release it as a native plugin and let those without a Powercore or System 6000 get to have access to it.

It's the slider thingy. And it seems to still not do what he claims. I agree that it doesn't really do the brick wall thing well, at least not for crushing, but strangely enough I like how it sounds as you just get it to kiss the wall. I let it take a little off the top to taste and then put the Logic's Adaptive Limiter over that to keep things as transparent as possible from there. I use the knobs. They come in handy. The slider thingy doesn't do ENOUGH of what he claims, but it does have value and I use it.

I'm testing FF Pro-L and I like it, but what's with all the different modes and presets? I think that's what kind of makes my head hurt. Endless second guessing.

If you guys haven't tried the IK Stealth, you should. You can get it cheap and it really is great. I need to try the InvisibleLimiter 2 again too.

Reading thru the Pro L manual to only realize inhale read it a few times.. I don't use it enough... I tested out several limiters in a new production I made and had everyone set to -0.3 and the gain or threshold to -7.8 or +7.8 as in Pro-L and Brainworx... There were several modes to choose from on each and I did not do that. Stock modes with dither and noise shape off. Other limiters have several units like limiter no6 and ozone. None of these units were used as used from the main Limiting section, limiter no6 the 2nd module to the left, set to brickwall, the clipper and ISP limiter were off. All ISP modes were off on each limiter as well. The master chain was pro q 2 doing a -72db HPF at 28hz, -36db LPF at 20khz, going into TDR Kotelnikov reducing at max -2db. -20.5 threshold, 0db peak crest, 3.0 soft knee, 103 ms peak release, 206ms rms release, no make up gain or output gain. This stayed the same while each limiter was tested. Release was tested stock default and at 103 ms. Testing choice was made with 103msec release for all limiters...I prefer unlinked however some cannot run unlinked so that's was left out as well. Mix peaking around -6 to -7 dbfs.
Limiters Tested: Brainwork bx XL v2 Limiter no6 Ozone 5 IRC 1-3/ hard Pro-L Waves L1 limiter Waves L1 + UltraMaximizer Waves L2 Waves L3 UltraMaximizer ( no graph / eq points) Waves L3 -LL Ultra ( small green one no graph )
On the BX xl2 there are saturation options ( XL knobs ) and you can set the mono makier frequency Slider depending on taste. I like 100-150hz usually. This limiter performed well and using the mono maker feature as well as the XL saturation feature, it was easy to have dynamics and loudness. With XL set to 30% on the mid lo freq ( 125 lower ) this limiter was Loud and very punchy. Without the XL and mono maker feature, this limiter tied for 2nd place.
The waves limiters do resemble each other but then again don't sound alike to my ears. The L2 performed beyond my standards and very well could have came in number 1 if it was more friendly without ARC. With ARC enabled, it may have been tied for 1st. However testing choice was made with 103 ms and therefore it suffered but not as bad as waves L3 Ultra Maximizer ( beige kinda gray color big version has the graph and freq. plots with ind. attack and release ) The waves L3 UM, again with 103 msec, was very sporadic in what was limited. For a modern paced beat with subbass, it was all over the place and altered the sound negatively. No more than -4db of limiting it was less than -3, on all however this L3UM gray had a -4.4/-3.8/-3.9 and L2 was somewhat sporadic having a -3.6 max reduction.
L1 & L1ULtra Maximizer performed differently when ARC was enabled and L1 baby performed better with 103msec release. Yes the baby L1 added a little bit of distortion with its fast release but once slowed to 103 ms it seemed to enhance the bloom / sustain of the sub bass. The L1UM was less controlled without ARC and sounded more distorted in the higher frequencies when pushed past -4db. Again, with the 103 ms release the L1UM had some -3.8/-3.6/-3.9 peak reduction, where baby L1 stayed below that and the max peak reduction was -3.4 one time.
Limiter no6 is a beast in its own right and if Pro L has choices then this is like going to a Buffett of plugins in one. I used the brickwall setting and adjusted the release by using the normal / 1/2, 1/3 switch however preferred the stock setting. This limiter works well on most material with the stock brickwall setting. I prefer this limiter unlinked. This one gets loud as well, stays punchy and can help retain more synods with use of other modules like the clipper and rms compressor.
Ozone IRC III/ II/ I and Hard I preferred the hard setting here because of the times release parameter if the testing. I wish I could set that in IRC 3 mode and that probably would have won. This limiter isn't as loud as others on the same settings. I found it needed almost a while db added to the threshold to achieve similar loudness to the waves and brainwork. IRC modes use different algorithms and IRC 3 is most CPU heavy and introduces the most latency in result for a higher quality less squashed and distorted sound. Well here it didn't seem to work that way, even with the character slider set the the fastest, it wasn't competing with the other limiters, sometimes not even showing GR. So the hard setting got loud and respected the 103 ms release time and sounded great with -8.5 on the threshold. Stays very true to sound even when pushing it too far...
The winner yup the L3 -Low latency UltraMaximizer, the little green square one. It was the most punchy and balanced throughout the mix and never had sporadic peak reductions like the other waves limiters in testing when set to a msec release and not ARC. This was the stock setting as well, Basic profile, no ARC, no IDR, no dither. I do feel it can be used for great purpose however if you are a set and forget, the L2 would be hand in hand with this one. I do think this green one is cleaner and causes less distortion or saturation pushed and not pushed. I was surprised at the results. I do feel like the L3-LL / L3/ L2 / L1 will harm dynamics if pushed to far, and it can fold in the mix by collapsing the sides. Each revision goes a little further before this happens. I don't know why L3 gray sounded so bad here, but the low latency version was the best...

I'm actually looking for something to replace FGX. I have three options:
Ozone Advanced (most expensive $349.99) but comes with multi-band / tape sim etc.
DMG $185.00 supposed to be the best, but that's your lot.
T-Racks MAX with Stealth, I'm kind of leaning towards it at $230.00 for the whole entire suite (33 plugins) including all the mastering stuff. Would stop the massive dependancy on UAD plugins, as I only have a UAD satellite duo. A lot of bang for your buck there and from what I've heard the plugs ain't half bad.

Thought I'd ask if any Logic X users here use the stock Adaptive Limiter at the end of the 2. I find it to be very clean.
