I can't understand any of this. I've been using PT in a hybrid environment for years and have yet to deal with a latency issue from hardware inserts. Flawless.

Just asking because quite a while back I did some tracking with a weekend band at a studio, they had HDX there and same as you didn't have any issues.. I was using PT 10 / 11 native which I had issues with (came with an M-box, didn't loose anything be switching to PT native).. Years ago I bought into HD then went back native when I shipped over from MAC, again no issues (really). Anywho, I really like samplitude.

I just wanted to say I feel your pain. Its so frustrating. Is there any chance you can share the Pro Tools Project with some one like drbill who has a funcitoning setup and see if he gets the same problem. Now you have a faulty project is the time for some trouble shooting. Immediately copy that project and try it again. Then start simplifying that project, by deleting plug ins one at a time, then testing, then, simplifying routing (get rid of busses one at a time...) you will find the culprit I bet. just some ideas to kick start your mind cheers Wiz

But man, I just wanna work. I'm mixing for a client with a deadline, and I'm just at my wits end that I'm dealing with this. Leaves me little time to troubleshoot. Plus, it's a total buzzkill.

Put that at the end of the audio track you are sending out to hardware.... its a single sample tick of audio. Then when you record the reamped track, it will be there, then you just slip edit the recorded track to line up, sample accurate ... really fast and also an excellent troubleshooting testing tool. cheers Wiz

You're on PT Native, then? Cause I am. HDx That explains it, I've never had issues with HDX or Native HD either.. Just Native.!

Time to upgrade then? Can't think of a better reason. Well, actually there are lots of reasons....

Time to upgrade then? Can't think of a better reason. Well, actually there are lots of reasons.... +1 My experience with PT is that if you want hassle free hardware inserts you're best going with HD Native or HDX and an HD compatible interface. At least with the Commit function in PT 12 it's easier than ever to print your hardware inserts.

Moved to samplitude and not had one single issue. My workflow is to mix the track and then master it in the same session so I can tweak the mix if there's something I might have missed.. It's easier than bouncing it down and having to switch through sessions, the amount of latency difference when adding a master fader in PT kept wrecking the mix, so that workflow is a nooo goo.! Are you using hardware inserts in Samplitude? Does it have proper plugin style hardware inserts now? I've always been intrigued by Samplitude but the last time I tried it out it didn't have hardware inserts. (Or at least the type of insert capability that I'm used to in Nuendo/Studio One/PT etc).

Time to upgrade then? Can't think of a better reason. Well, actually there are lots of reasons.... I guess I could upgrade PT, start paying subscription fees and then buy an Avid interface in order to mix with outboard. Or, I could switch over to Cubase. Frustrated with Pro Tools. I don't wanna switch cause I know it so well. But this just sucks.

Thanks man! Still a pain when I'm working on a track in the mix and hearing the tracked delayed in context. Makes for flangy/phasey kicks and snares. I got all this nice, expensive gear sitting here that is super hard to use due to this latency issue.

I don't have issues either. I run 32 bit PT 10.3.1 with rtas plugs and my HW inserts are good to go. Every now and then I will open a session that will make the I/O wacky however I go into the I/O setup and reset to default or highlight everything click delete then restore to default.
In the preference menu there is an option under one of the tabs that says ," Session overwrites current session I/O when opened." Make sure that is not checked, if it is, every session will change your I/O settings.

This is exactly why I started mixing in Studio One 3 instead of protools. Unless you are HDX or HD protools cannot handle hardware inserts. It was always these weird phantoms where sometimes it worked and sometimes it was funky and the rest of the time I was second guessing if it sounded weird or phasey. Much happier away from protools. Used protools since 6 too so it's not like I'm a nooby(with protools that is.)

I guess I could upgrade PT, start paying subscription fees and then buy an Avid interface in order to mix with outboard. Or, I could switch over to Cubase. Frustrated with Pro Tools. I don't wanna switch cause I know it so well. But this just sucks. For reference - I've been on PT since 2.0, a Mac Iici and those original horrid 4 channel interfaces. The computer, monitor, 650MB - yes, MB - Hard Drive and 8 channels of i/o. It cost well over 20K if I recall - and I was THRILLED to have it at that price. What a difference a couple of decades makes, eh??? As for the subscription - I'm not paying it. I hate being on the constant upgrade train anyway - no matter what the app is. Pro Tools does/did pretty much everything I ever wanted or needed several versions ago, so I skip out on the subscriptions and constant OS and PT upgrades and bide my time until a good upgrade situation occurs - and they constantly do. And I'm happy to avoid the constant upgrades. You could go cubase. I pretty much didn't dig it. For me PT is the perfect blend of a traditional tape/mixer/outboard approach with incredible features - but in a DAW environment. I'm committed. Just bought another 16X16 and another HDX card - upping my i/o to 64 - just barely getting my current i/o needs covered. I will take that up to 80 i/o later in 2017, and possibly up to 96 i/o eventually - hopefully that will allow for plenty of room for growth. (We'll see how it goes. Enough is enough sometimes, and I think I'm pretty much there. LOL But the Outboard gear itch is a hard one to break.... LOL) PTHDX runs it all perfectly 200+ tracks, Outboard, plugins, delay comp. It does it all so elegantly. I never give delay compensation a second thought -=- and I've got hardware on aux returns, audio tracks, busses, and the master fader. Perfect. I hope you figure out your conundrum. Sucks having those technical blockages that stop creativity cold in it's tracks. I will pay virtually anything I can afford to alleviate those blockades. Good luck.

It's had it for many years, just go to project settings > external effects and you can view all the HW inserts available.. I think this is one of the main issues with Samplitude, it's definatley one of the most powerful DAW's out there and in many ways it's very intuitive.. Then it has it's randomly hidden UI quirks and some things it doesn't make quite clear. Although I'd prefer slightly quirky to plain wrong and lack of..!

You're using the exact same version I was, so generally I'd have six vocal tracks, eight drum tracks, three guitar tracks and two bass tracks with several aux busses (usually ending in about 28 tracks in total). I know PT doesn't account for Aux bus latency, as for the rest well it does struggle with the amount of tracks I throw at it and I get phasey washout latency in various places. HW inserts seem fine when tracking but when mixing with everything else things seem to go out of whack, especially with heavier plugs like tape sims etc. (even if it's UAD) then adding in more HW.. Then I have to go through the process of trying to get it right manually..

I finished up an album that was 26 - 38 tracks on PT12 through a Motu 16a running on a 2012 2.6ghz i7 quad core Mac Mini, 16g ram. 12 - 16 HW inserts on every mix. 14 tracks on the album no issues at all.
I did read an interesting article on how the Mac minis and laptops need their heat sinks checked and new thermal paste applied. Issues apparently from 2012 on.

@shadowamd Mix Workflow: I mainly work in Rap, trap, RnB, Pop, rock and sometimes edm dance type.. Average mix is about 75 tracks. Starts with 30-40 audio tracks for the music, 30 aux tracks for subgroups, time based Fx, parallel fx, and mixbus and 1 to 50 Vocal tracks, more singing = more tracks. This includes doubles, background, ad libs, chants, and harmonies. I do my best to comp down where musically possible and try my best to keep things under 80 but more like 60 - 75 tracks. And now with VCA included in pt12.4 ( i'm slowly moving to ) I will have 8-10 more tracks for VCA groups. Everything gets routed to ( VCA groups ) aux subgroups respectively. Drums, Bass, Keys, Synths, Chorus/ Hook, Music Fx, Verse 1, Verse 2 ( if different artists ) BGV ( ad Libs ) ( depending on deliverable request ) TBFx ( for dry stems, yes have had that request ) which all feeds an aux named Mixbus where either the UAD Vertigo Vsc 2/ Waves API 2500 or Stam Audio sa4000 sits. I print through my H/W inserts because I have minimal HW.. Make a new playlist, name it, print. Then move to the next thing I want to use the HW for. The print still feeds into the same subgroup aux which may or may not have H/W inserted. I usually use the Line input of the gtq2 to drive and eq to taste on the music( keys/ synths ) print and move on to drums. I may use the wa76 on bass or kick, print and move on. Printed tracks still feed aux subgroup. I may compress the LD vox if I didn't track them with the HW wa76, otherwise UAD is cool. Slap the gtq2 on the chorus/ hook aux subgroup, find settings and print. If separate artists are on the verses, then likewise, set up the wa76, find settings, document in comments, make a new playlist, print the LD vox. If in doubt use a click track to see if you are in time on the grid, again trust your hearing, if it's out of wack you will hear it! At the end of the mix, when I have everything ready to go I print the mix or if im lazy ( or client just wants the master print ) I bounce it out stereo master/ mix. Mixes peak around -6, Masters usually DR 9- DR6 even though my last master was a DR 4 ( I know 😱🤣 ) I have the inputs muted in UAD Console app, if not you will hear the phasing from hearing the Apollo and PT input simultaneously. When using PT the Apollo imitates an Avid interface by aligning the inputs and outputs so they correspond. I am not sure why PT HW inserts are setup like this, but even using an Avid interface I'm pretty positive you have to go out say, " Line output 6 -> wa76 -> Line input 6 -> PT audio track for it compensate for the round trip... At 1024 playback buffer as well. Delay comp set to Max... Pretty standard from what I was taught and learned over the few years. drbill or anyone else using Avid interface, Have you tried using a H/W inserts without aligning the I/O? Ex: send vox out of avid hd output 6 and return to avid hd input 5, is the H/W insert time aligned grid wise and for playback? I know you are super busy, maybe next time you go to print a return, you could see? Thx in advance ðŸ¤
