I often wonder how many of all the plugs we all own, we actually use regularly ? I personally think its about 10%. Or put another way, if you had to get by with say 10 plug ins, what would you pick ? I mostly use UA plugs, here is my list of 10 ( I think ? API2500 comp Zener Limiter 1176 comp mkii la2a comp mkii Lex 224 verb Prec K fx Ampex tape Massive Passive EQ Pultec mkii Studer tape or maybe Curvebender eq

I have the vari mu and some other ua comps and some other limiters but I am working on a new song right now and just dropped the 2500 and zener on the master buss and the mix went pop in a really good way I have watched all the videos and downloaded Randy's files too. I won't pay $300 a piece but will wait for them to come on sale. Also, frankly I am having some financial pressures and am thinking of selling some stuff and as ua only lets you sell all your plugs, I am flirting with the idea of selling them all and then re-buying the 10 custom bundle. If so, I would buy the 2500 and Zener for sure.

I can mix an album with the following:
Fab Filter Pro-Q Fab Filter Pro-C Fab Filter Pro-L Transient Designer Softube Channel Strip Massey CT5 Altiverb Some soft of basic Mid Side gain plugin
But I can't do without good mics, preamps, and room space and placement. A top outboard compressor is a must have for vocals IMHO.

It's a moving target for me since it's only 5-10% at any given time.
But here are a few standbys, lately
FabFilter Pro-L FabFilter Pro-Q2 Pultec from UA or Waves API EQ from Waves (need to try UAD) UAD Oxide UAD Ampex UAD 1176 UAD LA2A reverb of the day, no favorites. lately Waves Abbey Road plate any number of character EQs or channel strips for the last spot, too many to mention. UAD SSL channel is a standout.

Ya strong showing from FF, for good reason !! peeps can still just buy slate plugs in they don't need to buy subscription ? I'm not surprised. FF and UA may be the best, but they're expensive. $650 buys you a bundle with only a half dozen FF plugs. UA needs an upfront hardware investment, right? Most of you are using this stuff professionally, so it probably makes sense to have the best and cherry pick the Slate line. But for a weekend warrior like me, and especially with the addition of VCC and VTC, the Slate bundle is looking like a pretty good one-size-fits-all option. One thing I am interested in is if the Slate bundle has a good surgical EQ. I like Logic's for contouring, but I just know there's better out there for dealing with tight work. The problem with (any) subscription is, how am I going to feel when they bump up the price? Slate wouldn't do that, would he?? Actually, one would think that with all the competitiveness in the industry, if anything prices should go lower, which is another argument for a subscription service.

But you could do worse than Melda - quirky but good. MAutoDynamicEq

For ua plugs you need ua dsp either on board your apollo or a satellite or card but they come up used often
Ironically slate just reduced his monthly cost (and removed reverb) but added his new verb.

Ironically slate just reduced his monthly cost (and removed reverb) but added his new verb. What do you mean by removed reverb? Is there anything the 'removed' reverb has that the Verbsuite doesn't?

I know we all have our favs/workflow, but one thing I notice, how little slate is making the top 10 ! I have lot of fun with VCC2 since two weeks and it seems that VBC is very close to my real HW as well. That is all I wanted from big companies with million dollar budgets in research... but all the years it was always a stupid compromise. I think a lot of the Slate plug ins are underrated or have been tested under not so great conditions. I don't like the way SL acts in marketing but hej if the plug ins sound great... he can act like he wants.

Oops I met relab(complete) was removed, although verbs unite includes some relab 480 voicings.
I have only read one user direct comparison they preferred relab to slate's 480.

It is still a great deal if you like some older Lexicon vibe on a budget. valhalladsp.com/shop/reverb/valhalla-vintage-verb/Step by step it became my go to verb for rock pop blues etc....
