Allrighty ...been really busy lately but ... mixed this on a laptop (never tried mixing on one) with cheapo headphones. Wanted to try out a particular brand of plugins, plus 1 mystery ingredient Will fess up later what was used but interested in any comments. Slagging this mix off is perfectly acceptable too I really wanted to put a bit of guitar on too but away from my mainframe setup the latency was about 6 weeks, so I gave up. did no editing / cleaning up so this is Organic https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-746923904/wizs-song-mixdownHey firstly, thanks for taking the time to play around with this and share, its great to hear everyones take. Its also cool, that you tried some stuff you never have before... How did you find the experience mixing on headphones..? I also wonder what the secret thing is? 8) The first thing I noticed... you pan a lot like me... LCR and audience perspective so that was familiar. The thing that most stuck out was the drum kit panning, it might be a creative choice on your part, or headphones... the snare was off centre to the right.... which kind of felt old school beatlesy in a way.. which again, made me think about the tune in different way... Did you intend that? and.. come on tell us what the secret thing is? cheers Wiz Wanted more of a live band sound - snuck the snare alongside the vox - (thats about where I normally stand down the pub wanted to keep fairly true to your consul mix for comparison. I was using a laptop with 3 of the free acqua plugins (tan, red and acquavox). The secret thing - I then printed it through a preset of IK's Lurssen just to see what it would do - Loaded your consul mix and the Zulu side by side and had a listen- that Zulu is a cool bit of kit.. Good fun this - I know a good way to get my songs mixed now Probably have another crack sometime and put a bit more time in - wanna crack at the solo here.....

Gotcha, I got confused by the labeling. I thought these were close mics of the ride and hat. Great song! If I get some free time, I might try to mix a version and add some Hammond. Yes! -it's crying out for Hammond.

Cliff notes :Subs fixed, working on final stages of mix, already ran a print off and tighten up further now Long story: OT as well, sorry for the rant... Got my subs fixed and actually had to do it with my handicapped self:) after getting jerked around on hold and told that the part that I was looking for, that I had to have the sku#, which I gave, was in stock, couldn't be held for 30 minutes. Upon arrival to said store, not one employee out of three would go find it for me. This is Best Buy, huge ass store, I was on crutches today and use a cane on good days. They had no handicap accessible carts or functioning wheelchair. After crutching around for 20 min going crazy, the part that was guaranteed in store that I had the sku # for was nowhere to be found.. However the name brand $29 dollar one was, not the $9.99 part.... After purchasing, I crutched towards the exit and the door would not open that's when a wonderful employee told me to use the other door.... ok dick.... they are automatic sliding doors, and btw every step matters for people like me you douche... So happy to be working on mixes again now that my second reliable reference is working... Got a mix bounced, listened, and making revisions now

For those of you interested, I used a 70's Univox Hi-Flyer with flats and a cloth jammed into the bridge cover. The bass went through an older Peavey Basic112 combo, preamp out, direct into my Tascam UH-7000. In the box I used a little Vertigo VSC-2 compression and a bit of FabFilter Pro-Q. Just laid the track quick at lunch, so it's not perfect, but it was fun.

Its always such a blast to hear peoples playing, and the way their feel moves the song about... I really loved the way the part built... I tend to plod along as a bass player.. this had some really great ideas and movement. thanks man... really dug it... cheers Wiz

So I really hated the drum reverb on my mix. I must have bumped the fader or something before I bounced it out before because it was higher than I remember it being when I set it before. Anyway, I brought that reverb down a little, adjusted the solo guitar level, and did another automation thing on the track...I think this is better. Let me know what you guys think! Have at it! I'm tryin' to get better and any feedback is helpful. Thanks again! Jcoutu1, sounds great. Out of curiosity, what does the cloth do?

Jcoutu1, sounds great. Out of curiosity, what does the cloth do? Thanks bradd, it's like a poor mans string mute to deaden the tone. I was looking for a nice round bass tone for this song. Was working on a mix last night though and wanted a bit more top. Go figure.

Thanks. I'm a horrible bass player, but attempt to play it on my own songs. I always struggle with strings ringing that I don't want to ring. I'll have to give this a try.

I have added links in the first post, to both your mix and the guitar track. As always, I get a different vibe/feeling from each persons mix... I thought the delays on the vocal were interesting.... and also where you positioned the drums in the image. Its also LOUD!!! 8) I hope you had fun doing it.... thanks again cheers Wiz

wiz I fixed the title, ya I definitely mixed and mastered the song. A few reasons why is : I wanted to deliver a finished product I did not compress or limit more than 3 db on any buss or stem, more like -1 to -2db sparingly and not on every buss Individual track compression was never more than 2db but add 2db of makeup I wanted to see how the noise would be as a finished product. I didn't push or limit exclusively for volume to be loud.. I made sure the RMS was the appropriate level for the genre -10 to -11 RMS / DR 7- like rock should be The files I imported into pro tools were peaking around -4.0dbfs at loudest peak, -5.6 avg peak, -18 RMS I wanted a great level for streamers on mobile / earbuds etc... The songs I referenced were around this same level/ volume... I always want to deliver the best work I can, and I am really happy with the mix and master. I feel this mix showcases what good tracking, songwriting, performing, and recording can bring when mixed and mastered. I can always print you a -6dbfs mix if you would like, not an issue at all, and of course I can remove the guitar part if you don't like it. I am confident enough to now offer this type of mix and master to my services and add this to my portfolio. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the mix and l enjoyed working on it.

I can't access jcoutu1 's mix to listen...
paddycrunden's mix, I have to say the vox are very dry, the acoustic guitar is a little over powering in the choruses and verse. The last hooks build up sounds great with the loud drums and guitars but the vox didn't come in powerful like the music, the first two lay down with me were buried.. good volume and balance, the noise was very audible.. the steel gtr panning and as gtr panning was similar to my mix, and I liked it a lot.. the vox were dry so the sibilance wasn't a problem so that's a plus as well.
Schmalzy's mix: great overall mix, love the guitar part that was added.. funny we had the same idea as a progression on the third chorus for the gtr... your lead is very emotional, and steals the show, I went for balance more of a supporting role where your was stand out... you had the drums a bit subdued compared to the rough and my mix and had the acoustic gtr featured with the rhythm supporting. I like your vox levels, didn't hear much time based fx, and I would have liked to hear some nice distorted delays on the ld vox. I felt the vox stood out from the music a bit, also feel some verb could have massaged this. I enjoyed this mix a lot, especially the gtr parts and how they were highlighted in the mix without being overbearing... Sibilance a little spicy in some spots, last chorus especially, but not problematic by an means. I found the level of this mix relative to mine as well..
A couple things I did with the guitars in my mix:
I panned the AC Gtr 100% to the left and the lap steel 100% to the right.. had sends from both to a med. plate, a 1/16 L -1/8 delay R ( 6% fb on L / 11% fb on R ) and 1/4 delay with 40% panned accordingly to provide a stereo image for each. I wanted the music to blend as a whole in a space, but made the steel stand out by adding a send to a medium hall which separated it from the AC gtr, but blended with the rest of the music... I also fed a small db level send from the lap steel into the drum room verb which had another low db send to the parallel drum crush, again adding texture to lap steel to make it stand out without adding peak volume but adding dimension...

During the mix, I was thinking about old blues guys. What would they want? What would it sound like if I was there when they played it live? What would they play during that last chorus? Would they wish they were taken more seriously as a vocalist? So, my mix isn't nearly as up front and hi-fi as Jesse's (jcoutu). I don't know if I could have gotten there, anyway. I'm not convinced I can get that "forward" of a sound to be balanced. Good work, Jesse! I think you did a few of the automation moves I did - finding something in the guitars to fill the holes in the choruses. Of course, I like your lack of fear in pushing stuff forward more than I like my "subtle" (read as: barely perceptible or noticeable so hardly effective) moves. I tucked some stuff in, panned the guitars in 20% rather than hard panned, and relied on the vocals. I could have definitely added more overall ambience. I think I tend to go too far with ambience sometimes so I tend to go conservative on that stuff as I react and swing back the other way. I really dig this whole "mix each others's songs" thing. When I get my next miscarriage of musical expression done, I'll toss you cats some stems and we'll see what happens!

thanks for the feedback guys - stuck to just 3 plugins in that mix ( so no verbs or trix) as wanted to try them - wanted to see if a 2 core laptop could run a few instances (Acqua). Not too bad but it wouldn't tolerate a whole heap of these plugs. I then threw it through a TK Lursson preset again just for kicksto see if it was terrible... I will have another mix done when I get some time ....
OK comments... Schmalzy - love that low end, and big drums...yeah Chase - really liked the fact that you've gone for a classic vs contempory feel with the vox - big mix jesse - smooth like butter - really nice!
