Actually its very similar to how you can run Zulu.
DAC> Line Ins on Wheatstone SP5A (EQ off) post fader direct output> Zulu Inputs> CAL Switch set to MX mode, Deck set to Hifi/"Swiss," Bias set to Bright, Enhance set to 75% Enhance, Headroom set to HiFi. I adjusted the signal from the DAW to the Line Input for clarity, I just wanted gain not character from the Line Input.
MX mode is a very nice, clearish and compressed Calibration. Without the Enhance set to 75% the highs would be softer and I liked the air on the vocal but not the looseness of the low mids. So 75% Enhance gave me both the air and that nice grab of the tape machine. There are even higher fidelity calibrations than MX but it sounded delicious on this example.
I really loved the phat splat that Zulu gave the snare, your vocal had gorgeous presence post Zulu as well. Sounds like analog magic. Thanks for such an awesome example. When you get a final rendition, Ill be glad print that through Zulu too.
Thanks -L.

SoundCloud or other hosting/ sharing site you prefer. I believe wiz has a place for the mixesnin the first post as well What ever makes it easy for the listeners is best I reckon.... Some might like the embedded player of soundcloud.. I like to download them and play them on my studio rig... If you can do both, that would be fantastic.... I was going to edit my first post to put peoples mixes in ,so that there was one easy to find place to listen to them... cheers Wiz I was kind of asking do we have your permission to publish on soundcloud as a mix we have done ... I know its a sensitive subject :-) I did an hour on this song last night .. nicely done and quite catchy. I will try to post back tonight with a final ITB UAD-centric mix.

My mix is in the final stages, I added a gtr solo to the best of my ability and I added an underlying progression to spice up the last chorus for a refresher... I gated the snare and had to clip gain the bleed because the gate was still chopping off some ghost hits while still allowing the bleed.
I do not have the auto align plug so manually tightened up a few parts but I left the drum groove in tact... panned things accordingly and the mix is taking on a rockstar vibe so far I really like this because I don't get to mix these type of real band records much if ever.... so thank you for helping me get better....
What mic did you use for LD VOX?

Oh shit!
I'm jumpin' in and you can't stop me!
I can't wait to butcher a solo. Are we thinking $15 mandolin or kazoo? I could also maybe try to use a vocoder on a sample cat meow...
We'll see what I can come up with...
Thanks for puttin' this out there, Wiz!

One quick question.... what level does it expect to see... what level will its 0Vu point be? +4dBm? cheers Wiz Zulu is definitely happy with +4dbm, but its not what I'd call a 0Vu point for it mainly because Zulu can be driven with extremely high levels beyond what we idenitify as 0db, far beyond what most DAC can deliver without artifacts. I have one power user who uses Zulu in HX mode, with the Enhance control set to 100% and with him slamming the mix into the input from his Amek console. I mean really pegging the crap out of it. Those input transformers definitely earn their pay at his studio! But the sound is gorgeous and I'd be a fool to argue with his results. I have to check my notes but if I recall correctly I had your mix leaving ReaInsert at around -9db but then applied another 15db or so of gain via the console line amp into Zulu's inputs. It gets even further interesting because if you do it by numbers, you'd be ignoring the concept of the sweetspot. Truly what we should be listening for is the sweetspot for each source or mix. Between the different calibrations of Zulu, the different tape decks and the different headroom settings, each outcome will vary by several magnitudes. In the example I posted, I did it based on what your mix and Zulu agreed upon. With the Enhance control set to 75% I had more energy when I drove your mix and that gorgeous spongey energy that I always drool over when I listen back to print off the Studer A810. I will say that if you send a mix "like yours," to Zulu without any other equipment involved just DAC/Zulu/ADC, then somewhere around -6 to 3db on the send is a good starting point. But the different calibrations will impact how soon you hit the sweetspot, so for example with TK mode you may be in the sweetspot right at -6db whereas with MX mode or HX mode you might be feeling the joy circa -3db. The CAL switch allows the user to configure Zulu for any scenario to best take advantage of the tape circuitry. TK mode is far more sensitive to level and better suited when you want to hear the tape effect without too much effort. However it incurs the most loss so for quieter material its not optimum. But if you start to dial in enhance you gain back some information and volume so it isnt so severe. TK is great on stuff thats already close to full scale like a loud kick drum, an in your face vocal or a full sounding bass. For someone who doesn't have alot of fancy equipment, TK offers the most opportunity for saturation and special effecty BroFi tape scenarios. Its also the most compressed Calibration so in the hands of an evil genius, some really wicked tones are waiting. The other 3 Calibrations offer increased headroom and fidelity, along with program dependendent sweetspots. I hope this adds some insight. Thanks -L.

I don't have a drop box account lol, I usually use WeTransfer.com to send out masters and mixprints. I can upload MP3/ AAC to SoundCloud and post link to the DL, I can probably get a 192kbp/s AAC/ MP3 out of the mixprint. The real mix is 24-48 as per the original files... MFiT is 256 Kbp/s variable bit encoded AAC, so I will upload the highest AAC I can I'm pretty sure you want the mixes from participants so you can a/b and compare in your DAW, as well also I could prob send the session depending on size, only issue is we transfer acts weird about folders and normally rejects the transfer...

Celebrated moms bday today as well by grilling BBQchicken, burgers and steaks... I was real full, then had some special brownies for dessert and I was passed out in no time... Finally got replacement fuses for my car's 2 12" subs w/ 1000 watts per ch. amp which is a reference necessity for me and my mixes. Going to car shop with a mix print bounce and master print bounce CD in hand so I can leave the shop bumping " Layyyy Downnnnn withhh Meeee" I really like the way your vox chain handles your sibilance, your mic techniques is very nice too. I am in the final stages honestly, and pretty happy so far.. I'm working on overall RMS volume and bits of ear candy... I have spent 3 or 4 4-6 hour mixing sessions so far..

Well, I went safe on the solo section. No tuned kazoo or anything, just my suspect guitar playing. Sooooo...there's one thing I'm REALLY unhappy with in my mix but it's 3 am here and I'm leaving town for a few days in four hours...so I'm quitting working on this thing. Wiz, if for some reason you want this mix for something let me know and I'll make that fix (I might do it anyway - it'll be Friday at the earliest, probably). Let's see if you cats can spot the thing I'm super unhappy with in my mix. Cool song, man. Thanks for contributing to my sleep deprivation! Here's the soundcloud link: soundcloud.com/red-dot-recording/lay-down-with-me-by-wiz...and here's the Google Drive link in case any of you cats want to download it for some reason: drive.google.com/open?id=0Bzugr8cD5X_MNEZmNjNENGdRODAThanks again, Wiz! I'm going to bed! Any and all criticism is accepted. Thanks for any insight you can all lend!

Allrighty ...been really busy lately but ... mixed this on a laptop (never tried mixing on one) with cheapo headphones. Wanted to try out a particular brand of plugins, plus 1 mystery ingredient Will fess up later what was used but interested in any comments. Slagging this mix off is perfectly acceptable too I really wanted to put a bit of guitar on too but away from my mainframe setup the latency was about 6 weeks, so I gave up. did no editing / cleaning up so this is Organic https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-746923904/wizs-song-mixdown

I'm going to bed! Any and all criticism is accepted. Thanks for any insight you can all lend! I always have such a great time, listening to peoples mixes of one of my tunes... I always hear something in their approach that pricks my ears up and makes me think about the creative choice they made, and how it spurs a new direction for the tune. I really enjoyed the choices you made, drummer perspective panning on the kit... I always go the other way, so even that makes me hear the tune in a new light. The interplay of the lead guitar at the end, just made me think of guns and roses, I don't know why... but I could see the tune now having a band rock out ending.... thanks again for taking the time to do this, I hope you enjoyed yourself.. I always learn from these and its great. cheers Wiz

Its also cool, that you tried some stuff you never have before... How did you find the experience mixing on headphones..? I also wonder what the secret thing is? 8) The first thing I noticed... you pan a lot like me... LCR and audience perspective so that was familiar. The thing that most stuck out was the drum kit panning, it might be a creative choice on your part, or headphones... the snare was off centre to the right.... which kind of felt old school beatlesy in a way.. which again, made me think about the tune in different way... Did you intend that? and.. come on tell us what the secret thing is? cheers Wiz

Gotcha, I got confused by the labeling. I thought these were close mics of the ride and hat. Great song! If I get some free time, I might try to mix a version and add some Hammond.
