I have tried the entire line before and liked them all. My timing was off as I had bought mics right before trying them though. The Apollo is a really cool mic.

I worked on a few they sounded ok. One of them was a ribbon I think it was the Apollo. The other was Orpheus that I modded. I like that they were different looking and construction was good

Try a Miktek Pm-9, or for softer playing, a PM-5.

Nobody try that snare condenser? Most intriguing one to me. Always looking for something besides the old tubby 57. Last week my transformer guy sent me a modded SM57 as a demo. Cobb has it right now. Ironically, its a transformer less design that is suppose to sound crazy good. Front End has some info here www.frontendaudio.com/Crimson-Audio-White-SM57-SM58-Modification-p/9999-17189.htmSorry to hijack Noah. I hate when guys do that to threads over at GS and now here I am doing it to you

This is really a "cmon...there has to be a good snare mic somewhere...help." type thread anyway Jeff. Not really a hijack. I'll just get em both and hold my breath.

That's what I've been using last couple records. Def an improvement from a 57. Good one!

That's what I've been using last couple records. Def an improvement from a 57. Good one! Interesting. I've had an M201 for years and haven't liked it at all on snare. Too paper-y sounding and the off-axis pickup is extremely nasal sounding. I'm sticking with the good old I5, although the M80 love intrigues me..

I keep reading this, but online clips don't seem to portray it as anything greater than maybe 10-15% better sounding than the SM57 on the same source. Certainly hard to justify the 200%+ higher price based on the samples I've found. You got any better samples that might sway me?

To me it sounds like a 57 without the blanket.

I do have a M201 that I'm thinking of selling in case anyone is interested..

M201 into vp28 is a very slick bass amp mic.

M201 into vp28 is a very slick bass amp mic. So we've completely derailed Noah's thread about Sonotronics mics and made it a thread about M80s. So since this thread is about the Telefunken M80 and we're bringing the M201 into it... wait a minute, I see how this works. I can do the math. M201 - M80 = 121. R121. So what you guys are really saying is "Buy a Telefunken M80 AND a Royer 121". Ok, I've got both, so I guess that puts me in the class with the cool kids. Sweet! Now, how do we get the Sonotronics back into this equation??? (using my usual lame humor to try and bring the thread back on point)
