Got another old Sennheiser MKH condenser How do you like to use shotguns in the studio? The MKH104 and 105 are not shotgun microphones and are gloriously beautiful, detailed, super low noise SDCs.

Those are the omni, the 400 series are cardioid. I'd avoid the 104/404 because they are battery power only, would need a significant mod to use. Most are T power and Tuchel rather than 48V and XLR, though there are some 106/406 48V XLR models.

Finally scored this reverb. I missed out on it several times over the last few years. The last of which was by minutes and I got so angry I really had to stop and check myself. Just as I was figuring on letting it go there it was. Sounds amazing.

This one is more geeky tech than gear but I have probably 20 plus wire strippers, but non of them work well consitantly on the tined solid core twisted pair with ground found on ADC and other patchbays that have the wire wrap jacks ( Belden 8450). It's either a fight or you end up removing or cutting one of the inner conductors and instant shorts. This cable is great for nice easy Crimp Dsubs ! Well found this $25 Ideal Stripmaster using 10-12 ga space in the cutter is the ticket. The only thing is I need another one set up just for the 20 ga conductors so back to Menards, save big money my ass, more like spend more money! Yep, replying to a fairly old post. Just have to note that this is a great recommendation for wire strippers. I use the Ideal Stripmaster for 20-26 ga stuff, and it works extremely well.

ericn always has the best tool recommendations. I'm going to have to get some of these. Those little Hakko wire cutters were a revelation to me.

When I first got it I mixed a rock group as if they were playing in the old High School gym.

When I was at your studio and asked about fx you got a crazy look in your eye haha knew you had some gems hiding out. Hope you're well.

Consecutive serial numbers. One owner. Perfect condition. Good find. They look about in the same condition as my KM84's. It's getting harder to find KM's that aren't beat up. Shall I ask what you paid for them or is that a secret? (in case your wife is watching!)

Double the trouble. Added a second Lindell PEX-500 pultec-style EQ since I enjoyed the first one so much. This 500 series 10 space rack will be full by the end of the month!! If I stick to my guns, I hope my next thing will be a Hairball 1176.

Those 84s look a bit too good so I suspect the cases were replaced recently.

Anybody buy KM84's on ebay? Seems like there are always a few floating around out there...makes me nervous, though.

Those 84s look a bit too good so I suspect the cases were replaced recently. Probably stored in a cupboard unused for a long time. Based upon the serial numbers these are close to the end of production. The only KM84 parts still available are the capsules. You can occasionally get lucky and find the odd KM84 in good condition but most are not.

Anybody buy KM84's on ebay? Seems like there are always a few floating around out there...makes me nervous, though. I had trouble finding decent KM84's online but ended up with a very nice KM85 from Denmark on eBay about 2 years ago and then found a mint used KK84 capsule a few weeks later also on eBay. If you can score a decent KM85 for say around $800 USD (or less) then it's worth considering as you can still buy new KK84 capsules for about $550 USD. IMO that's better than spending a similar amount in total on a well worn KM84.

monkey, how are you liking the DBX's? Were they the ones that sold for a sweet discount around 6 months ago? That's absolutely right. I got the pair for $200. I sold the first pair I had that I paid more for, but for $99 each I had to go for it again. I suppose I learned a lot from my mistake. The DBX compressors are something special that stand a bit apart from general low-end hardware for me. I really like them on drums and bass right now. Or the soft knee mode for more general leveling on various sources. But it was the Lindell EQ's that really pushed me over the edge into hybrid mixing. Comparing to plugins, I decided it was time to invest in some hardware. The two together make a really nice snare drum signal path, with a couple of patch cables on the patch bay. The closest plugin I could find to the DBX 560A was the Native Instruments VC-160, but the DBX sound a little better still. It was close, though, not night and day. If you need the best 160 in the box, I would say take a look at the NI VC-160. The Lindell EQ sounded better than the general plugin style EQs I compared it to, by some significant margin. At this point, I decided it was time to invest a small portion of income into mixing hardware, which I have been neglecting for some time. If you have enough AD/DA I/O from your interface, and a simple TRS patch bay, it is no question to me that smartly picked hardware under $600 can give some significant margins to your mixing game. Also since I don't run a busy multiple-mix commercial operation, it is no trouble to me to leave the mix "up" for a day or two to work out the kinks before commiting to the final sounds and moving on to the next one. Two big plus points for hybrid mixing are the -fun and -fast factors. Another good perk is that everyone that stops by my room gives a big thumbs up to the setup. Hahaha!

Although most obviously aren't particularly wanting the high passed characteristic response of a KM85 don't disregard one if you can find a decent example at a cheap price.
1. KM85's are generally cheaper and most are in better condition than KM84's. 2. If you buy a new KK84 capsule you essentially wind up with a new KM84 mic (as long as the KMi body is up to spec) 3. The KK85 (high passed) capsule still has uses, high hats, close mic'ed acoustic instruments, mandolin etc.

I always wanted to score me a washboard for those cool scratchy rhythems. Now all I have to do is find a tin washtub, a broom handle and the right piece of rope and I have the old'time rhythem section. And standing next to it, thats my old and cherry Ibanez J-540NT jumbo. She plays like a dream. click image uploadcertificity.com
