drsaxThe Electra's do have something that sounds new. I don't know if it's because I used them after listening to Gregory's colorful language explaining them. I definitely like them a lot. Only used the plugs. He makes cool gear for sure.

I waited to try them and was shocked in a very good way. I haven't tried the plug and I'm sure it's good. But I know that from a hardware perspective, these EQ's are seriously impressive.

1937ish RCA Photophone Volume Indicator Panel. Pre-VU standard, high speed hilarious bouncy needle, no damping. 0-30 dB adjustment in 2dB steps, so you can trim it to the sweet spot. Program apparently ran hotter back then, because trimmed -4dB is right for a standard modern rock record at 0dBFS = +22dBu. That'd blow up a VU.

Program lines to the transmitter often ran really hot. +8 was as common as +4 and I think Ampexes were originally tapped for +8. This is why gear from that period has so much output capability aka headroom. +4 was a cheap transistor thing.

Somebody told me around 1970 that the markup for tube gear was typically 2x the cost of parts while the markup for transistor gear was often 5x.

This one is more geeky tech than gear but I have probably 20 plus wire strippers, but non of them work well consitantly on the tined solid core twisted pair with ground found on ADC and other patchbays that have the wire wrap jacks ( Belden 8450). It's either a fight or you end up removing or cutting one of the inner conductors and instant shorts. This cable is great for nice easy Crimp Dsubs ! Well found this $25 Ideal Stripmaster using 10-12 ga space in the cutter is the ticket. The only thing is I need another one set up just for the 20 ga conductors so back to Menards, save big money my ass, more like spend more money!

My big, exciting new purchases this month are a 250 foot roll of 12 gauge speaker wire, two 8 spot pedal power supplies, some pedal patch cables, some Caig Deoxit, a long spool of Canare balanced install cable (grey color).
Not very glamorous, or expensive stuff but the way it has allowed me to use what I already have has been thrilling and inspirational.

I'm getting the new 1 channel Stam 73 soon. I'd love the bigger one, but it'll be a lot better than my plain Apollo pres,. I sold my Dizengoff D4 to help fund the move to the new Apollo and a new i7 iMac w/ thunderbolt. Can't wait to hear your impressions John. How soon will you get it?

Sweet c0rtland! I'm also planning on acquiring the 60 watt version as they aren't quite as 'Dumbly' in the lead department. As you have both, you probably know what I'm talking about. Hi gain, normal normal, presence, classic and you have the makings of the Dumble tone and definitely a lot of Jeff Beck. Most ahead of its time, advanced, under-rated and under-valued amp in history. We should be encouraging Seymour to get back into this business!

I don't have that foot switch, and the reverb doesn't work in the combo but... Haven't been able to find stand alone tube cartridges either. They are definitely under rated. Got the combo for free and the head was $500. I was like are you kidding me? Sold.

Tell me, c0rtland, what differences do you find between the 60 watt single channel and the 100watt dual channel? P.S. These amps are going for as much as $2900 now! They're in high demand in the UK, according to Seymour.

Super clean tons of headroom on clean channel. Overdrive channel has loads of clarity and a meaty girthy overdrive when pushed. It's just great. The combo has the high gain tube and the presence tube.

Joemeek VC3 (early TF signature one). Didn't really mean to buy it - primitive reflex bid .....

Just bought another Duncan Convertible. That makes 2 now. 1 head and this combo. I owned two of the 100W heads back in the day (late '80s). I had a friendship with the SD Southwest regional sales rep Ziggy Haspod and he set me up with the full range of modules. He opened a road case and said "take any you want". I was gigging a lot in those days and ran two half-stacks, running the wattage up as the set progressed. It was beautiful.
