Sometimes the unobtainium is really difficult to sell.... You just have a knack for buying the weirdest stuff! Not that, that's a bad thing! Yeah, I have more than a dozen rare historically significant pieces that I am unaware of another extant example in anyone's collection. That's one argument for 'value', but also in the eye of the beholder, when no one's heard of it, why would they buy it from you? They got the purple site telling what lemming items they should invest in.

Well, looks like the M149 is getting returned. Noisy, front of the capsule doesn't work, and both sides of the grill are seriously damaged. Oh, and the shock mount is damaged. And the cable has a splice in it. Deceptive eBay pictures for sure. Hopefully it's a painless return...

Yeah...I knew it was likely going to good bad when the seller told me after I paid for it and it shipped that "I think the cable has a short in it"...oh well eBay is pretty good about helping buyers out it'll probably just take a couple weeks :/

Waiting on Waves to handbuild my brand new SSL 4000 collection 😂😂😂 So $749 retail ( $590 on plugin sites ) and I was searching for used licenses and surprisingly used eBay SW is high as hell. Anyways it's about 75% off where I purchased. I am one step closer to 64 bit land. I just need to upgrade my melodyne, auto tune, wave lab, and some other randoms..
For $180, I got the E channel, G channel, Bus Comp, and G Eq, less than $50 a plug. Unfortunately most probably have paid double to triple what I just did and no telling how many more users have cracks ( I know waves are notorious is the crack pirate community )

Ran into something like that a few months ago with an MD441 that looked fine as per the high resolution pics in the auction, but once it arrived, it was evident that the grill was bashed in badly on the one side that happened not to be pictured in the auction. Seller took it back and refunded no problem, but it was pretty clear that they were being deceptive and hoping for an ignorant buyer.

Chase, I just tried parallel compression for the first time on a drum bus, using the Waves SSL, and it worked nicely. I had to sell my gorgeous mint vintage ES-335 last summer to pay bills. I only had my Aerodyne Fender Telecaster left, which I loved the sound of because of the P-90 in the neck position, but never really liked the rosewood neck it had on Tele's as much as maple. I missed having a Gibson sound when I need one for tracking, so I traded someone my Tele yesterday for Les Paul Studio 50's Tribute. I grew up on SG's, Les Paul SG's and standard Les Paul's, so I love the binding on those necks. The plain neck on the Studio is a bit of a personal letdown, but it plays well, and reminds me a lot of a 57' Les Paul neck, and I can accept that there is no binding for a while, because I also played a 61' Les Paul Jr. as a main guitar which had no binding for years, so it's not a deal breaker right now. The person I traded with got it from someone who relic'd it, which I hate, because it's so fake, but... I feel it was still a lot more guitar than my Tele was, and I thought the nickel pickup covers was a nice touch. Meanwhile, I did have a $150 Squire 51 in my closet I used for students. It has a Tele neck and a modified Strat style body. It was the only Squire ever made that wasn't a copy of a more expensive Fender. It became so popular an entire website was devoted to all the mods people were doing. Mainly because at that price, they didn't care if it got mucked up. Some of the mods I'd seen were quite interesting and very well done. This way, I still have a Fender sound if I need one, and will get another Tele at a later date. The 51' actually sounds pretty good, it's closer to a Tele, but not quite the same. It really is somewhere between a Strat and a Tele. Sop, I brought both guitars to a shop for a setup, and I'm changing the Squire 51 nut to a bone nut to get more sustain. The 51' was so popular, Fender actually began making one under the Fender name that was identical, except with a slightly nicer finish on the neck, selling for $799! Here's the Studio 50's Tribute. The correct knobs are back on now, so they're all gold, also the pickguard too. I haven't decided if I'll keep the pick guard or not. Attachments:

If eBay/PayPal didn't have buyer protection there is no way in hell I'd by a mic from there. I've gotten 3 bad telefunken d19's various issues, 1 d12 no lowend, 3 re20's all with the same problem, 1 km54 didn't pass audio, a 269c with a wrinkled capsule, an rca 77dx from a sorta known producer that had nothing under 800hz. All of which were listed as at least 'good working order'. That's what we put up with buying old used gear. Test immediately and stay polite, take pics.

Thanks Ward. I used to enjoy seeing all the mods there. My only real issue is the flat finish on the neck.I'd love to have the neck lacquered, but I don't believe that can work with frets still on. If it had a lacquered neck, I'd pop some really good pickups in there. I like the shape of the neck itself.

You know, there are some decent spray can types of lacquer out there. Simple strip all hardware off the neck, except for the frets and nut. Spray the whole thing after a good thorough cleaning and any needed buffing. Cut away the lacquer from the frets and nut crowns with a single sided razor blade (or 3 or 4). once really dry. Then just pick off or rub off the rest that you wish to get rid of. There are all kinds of tutorials about this on line. Youtube etc. Anyhow, back to the new gear!!

I got a couple of new EV mics to play with. Musician's Friend is blowing them out cheaper than a bottle of cheap rum. One could have been fine, but for the price, why not both. I am experimenting with some new guitar mic techniques. One common advanced technique is to use a bright mic, and a dark mic in coincident, then blend them in the mix for the right tone instead of EQ, or in addition to EQ. Albini and Eric Valentine have both talked about this. I took an educated guess that the EV CO4 could be my "bright" mic, since that's what everyone was complaining about. In my case, this is a feature and not a defect. I have to say in my first test, it worked out really well. My dark mic was my modified Apex 205 ribbon. I blend in the CO4 track for a little bit of that top end grit and sheen. I cannot do this without the Little Labs IBP plugin from UAD. That is another essential element to getting the phase right, and the sound right between the mics. My placement skills are not legendary enough to nail the phase every time. I also am going to try this out with one of my more neutral tube mics as the dark mic and see what happens there. Also my mics were three feet out in front of the cabinet and not jammed up on the grill cloth. This is another thing I've been messing with lately to get a little more of the room in the sound. I am tired of claustrophobic sounding mixes.

I am officially declaring February "Gear from John's Past Month" I know he got this one from VK just like his first one, the thinking was if it didn't match up well with the other one he bought a year ago they would take it back. That was worth the VK premium to Bradd!

I bit the bullet and paid the VK premium. I bought my first one from them two years ago and have been very happy with it. I guess I'm willing to pay a bit more for one that I know has been properly serviced.

Hey, years ago my buddy had his Blaupukt tape deck jacked out of his van parked outside my house at 34 East 4th Street (my rent was $350 in '89). I went with him the next day to what I rightly dubbed "The Thieve's Market" just north of Canal on the west side of Broadway later that evening. He bought it back for 20 bucks which was well worth the time that it would have taken to deal with the cops.
