Chandler Germanium Comp, I've wanted one for a few years ever since getting the plugin. Germ Comp is every bit as spicy as I'd hoped, and will heighten my overall sauce factor quite dramatically and on demand. Sure glad there is a wet/dry on there! Like probably lots of others have noted, the Germ Drive and Neg FB alone are quite delicious. For vocals tracking I'm using Germ Comp right after the mic Pre to cut some intrusive tidbits off the top (GR ~2 db), then I go through the WA2A rolled with some NOS tubes (GR ~ 3 db). On the Germ Comp, early days yet but so far Clean Mode, fast attack (1-2) & release (3-4) and Germ Soft or Med Knee with Ratio ~4 and ~30% Dry then drive the output Germ Drive to 3 oclock and use lots of CCW dialing of NFB (~9 oclock) to brighten it up and reduce the output signal. What a sweet beast. I have one and love it on guitars. but now I need a second one. I wish they still made the germanium tone control. For guitars the Chandler Germanium Drive pedal is really sweet. Have you checked that out? It's 18V so nice headroom and the Drive sounds like the Germ Comp Drive to me. The Neg FB is a nice selection of "presets" of what I now realize is the full spectrum of NFB options which are available on the Germ Comp. And there are a couple of tone shaping toggles. For guitar, highly recommended.

however I was afraid they’d be a 1 trick pony That’s been a concern of mine too… Not really the one trick pony part, but more of concern that that will be everyone’s sound. Maybe not a valid concern… I really should have a pair already! The sound wholly depends on your room. Not many people have ceilings as high as mine so I’m not worried. Besides people have used tons of 1176’s non stop since their invention.

SAMAR MG20 delivered yesterday. STAM SA-87i delivered today, Vintage NOS Gotham GAC3 cable Austrian Klosterneuberg being shipped from Lew Frisch next week. I've been reinvestigating the MG20 lately, what a great mic. Vocals, electric guitar and keys. It's a jack of all trades and master of them also. Great frequency response, some subtle transformer action. I want another! I'm curious about the Samar MG32 and MG33, as they do not have the transformer which the MG20 has. I haven't wanted to take the plunge on those ones though because I've convinced myself that that transformer in the MG20 is integral to the great tone I'm getting. Please share some thoughts on your MG20 once you've gotten acquainted with it? :-)

Yesterday I picked up a CAD E100S that I found for cheap (200) at Guitar Center. For that price, I wasn't expecting anything but the mic but it ended up coming with the retail box and wooden case as well as the manual/bag and extra suspension rings... which ended up getting used to replace the broken ones immediately. Maybe not the place for a question for this inquiry - but I notice even after replacing the "rubber bands" that this shockmount doesn't really seem to create any physical separation between the inner frame that connects to the microphone and the outer cradle. I'm guessing that over time, one might have to bend the frame outwards to create that separation again?
Also received the Empress ECM 519. Probably on hold until I manage to build a few display cabinets from Ikea for Christmas gifts today and tomorrow.

I picked up a few sound toys for home: AMT Analog Flanger (oustanding base sound and the musical drive and envelope take it over the top ) Pedal Brainz 3rd Eye expression controller (cool to look at, fun and easy to use) Audio Kitchen The Small Trees booster (perfect pairing into the ZOD DI)
Our studio also got the Hum Audio LAAL, which is phenomenal. Pricey but worth considering if you are consistently mastering in a hybrid setup. There's nothing else really like it that I've used.

I have recorded myself playing flute and alto saxophone with my MG20.
The transformer MG20 has a rich sound for flute and is very quiet. I bought it for recording flute. I immediately preferred my flute sound with the MG20 over my transformer-less Schoeps Colette with either of my MK41 or MK22 capsules.
The SDC MG20 sound is not fat enough for saxophone, but sounds very clear and articulate. Just too delicate for saxophone.
Mark’s transformer design certainly lives up to everything I’ve heard and read about it. I hope a future LDC transformer coupled microphone is is in his thoughts and plans.

That is great info and helpful context, thanks. I don't play or record any wind instruments but from other instruments that makes sense. I like the MG20 on lead guitar but actually just realized I haven't tried it on electric bass. Now I'm curious if your experience with flute vs sax may be similar to electric lead guitar vs bass. I'm going to try that hopefully this weekend. I'd be very keen on a Samar LDC with a transformer as well. I also have the AL95 with ALactive and I've been wanting to try another of his offerings but haven't explored what else he has yet.

Got a proper door installed. Was using barn door to access, this is much better and more secure. Also added to the fleet: AEA R88 mk ii, Coil Audio CA-70s, Stam SA-609, AudioScape V-COMP, Stam Sa-87T, and a Chad Kelley Signal Art Electronics-modified WA-47. And two Stam SA-1073EQ channel strips.

Have you used the Laal widener a bit already & do you like it ? Sure, width sounds good in the first 2 positions to me. Beyond that it's pretty strong for mastering, maybe cool for flicking up a position for a big chorus or interlude change in dimension. I'm rarely using it though, but that's more to do with the majority of mixes I get for mastering being wide already. We also have the RND MBT which I like the width on, set somewhere in the 3-400Hz range. I actually prefer it set for the most narrow possible action in more cases - running it linked L/R hitting 4-5dB GR can sort of bring some excitement and focus up the middle. The Dyanmic Transient fuction is great and the box tone is subtle but flattering on anything so far.

A new Soyuz 017 FET mic. They raised the price a few hundred, but they now include a shock mount that's built like a... ahem... Russian tank. Plus they include a 20db pad and ship in a really nice larger wood box.
I also grabbed a new Shure Beta 57a, which looks totally different than the one I bought in the 1980's. Yeah the A got a pretty grill, nobody really liked the look of the original Beta57, it looked to much like the Holy Grail of Unidynes the 548. The capsule is supposed to be improved but not sure how. So then why does the original sound so much better on vocals, snare drum and brass?

IIRC lots o' Beta 57's on the ABBB later live vocals. But I did prefer 'Ol reliable 58's. Chris

(I have not tried a recent beta57) Beta 57 was a better mic than a Mexican 57 on almost anything, the 58 though always got edgy, the higher output was nice, but it was the mic that gave Neodymium a bad rap.

Thanks Eric. I did a little reading. I have not used the beta57 since the 90s. Apparently, once can still find these but they made need new foam. I wish I knew more about changing foam as I would also like to have some of the Senn 409s from the 80s and refoam them.

Ii have had the idea in the back of my mind; If you can somehow cut foam with a CNC, someone could do OK. I know the old Cuttingedge acucstical foam was cut with some kind of knife.

An update. A while back I posted that I bought a couple of completely original Neumann Berlin M7s in perfect shape. Ward had mentioned that I might be disappointed because he preferred the K47. I had an extra KK47 headbasket assembly so I put one of these M7s in it and compared to the current K47. This M7 sounds like a dream and I easily prefer it to the K47. Like the old cliche, "It sounds like the Beatles!" haha

I far prefer my Wunder CM7 with the Wunder M7 capsule - partly because Mike tweaked it for my voice and partly because when I think U47 - I think .... > Sinatra > McCartney > Henley > M7 capsule. It's those iconic reedy mids and beautiful mellow top end putting a K47 in a 47 shouldn't be allowed (I joke of course!) I'm envious of your orginal M7's .... I bet they do sound amazing!
